True display of belief and passion: Kohli lauds Women in Blue's heroics in WC semifinal

Navi Mumbai: India team celebrate after defeating Australia to qualify for the finals of the ICC Women’s World Cup ODI at DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on Thursday, October 30, 2025. (Photo: IANS)

New Delhi, (IANS) Indian batting stalwart and former skipper Virat Kohli hailed the Women in Blue for their stunning victory over seven-time champions Australia in the ODI World Cup semifinal, calling it a “true display of resilience, belief, and passion.”

India produced a remarkable performance to defeat Australia by five wickets at the DY Patil Stadium on Thursday, punching their ticket to their third ICC Women's Cricket World Cup Final after 2005 and 2017, when they finished as the runners-up behind Australia and England, respectively.

Reacting to the triumph, Kohli took to social media platform X to applaud the team’s efforts. “What a victory by our team over a mighty opponent like Australia. A great chase by the girls and a standout performance by Jemimah in a big game. A true display of resilience, belief, and passion. Well done, Team India!” he wrote.

Jemimah Rodrigues starred in the chase with a stunning knock under pressure, scoring 127 off 134 deliveries as India chased down a record total of 339 in Women's ODI history.

India's 341/5 in the semifinal is also the second-highest score in a Women's ODI run-chase, after their own 369 all-out against the same team in New Delhi last month.

This is the first time a 300-plus total was gunned down in an ODI World Cup knockout - Men's or Women's. The previous highest had come in the Men's CWC 2015 semifinal: 298 by New Zealand vs South Africa in Auckland.

India will now look to carry the same momentum into the final as they chase their maiden Women’s World Cup title. The tournament hosts India will take on South Africa, featured in a Women's World Cup Final for the first time, on Sunday, meaning a team will claim the coveted trophy for the very first time. Ferocity, fitness and fast bowling: how Virat Kohli revolutionised Indian cricket

Virat Kohli announced his retirement from Test cricket on Monday.

While his Instagram message just said this was the “right time”, his poor recent Test form, mental fatigue and desire to spend more time with his family, charity foundation and expanding business empire have been suggested as other influential factors.

During his 14-year Test career “King Kohli” has been the backbone of the Indian batting line-up, and his absence is a huge blow as the Indians prepare to tour England next month.

The megastar scored 9,230 runs in 123 Tests at an average of 46.85, including 30 centuries.

These numbers put him in the top five Indian test batsmen of all time, but his legacy extends far beyond his batting achievements.

Kohli, 36, quit Twenty20 Internationals last year (after India won its second world title). He may continue to play one-day internationals.

Rising to the top of Test cricket

Kohli has been the greatest Indian batsman of his generation.

He made his Test debut in 2011 against the West Indies and played his final match against Australia in January.

He scored centuries against every country he played against, with more than half of these coming overseas.

His seven Test centuries in Australia is the second most by an overseas batsman.

He was at his peak between 2014 and 2019, when he averaged more than 60 in Test cricket and became one of the “fab four” (the world’s best Test batsmen) alongside Steve Smith, Kane Williamson and Joe Root.

This period also included six double-hundreds in 18 months, and 13 months as the number one ranked Test batsman in the world.

Kohli the leader

Kohli is India’s greatest ever Test captain.

His tenure from 2014 to 2022 was a golden age for Indian Test cricket.

India won 40 of 68 Tests (59%) in this period and did not lose a Test series at home. India was the number one ranked Test team in the world from 2016–20 and won its first Test series in Australia in 2018–19.

These statistics make Kohli one of the most successful Test captains of all time.

Beyond these numbers, he was a charismatic and aggressive captain who redefined India’s approach to Test cricket by bringing a more competitive edge to the team.

He drove higher expectations around fitness, training intensity and fast bowling that continue to shape Indian cricket.

Mandatory fitness testing and improved dieting and recovery practices, which redefined the team’s standards, are attributed to Kohli’s leadership.

Similarly, Indian success was strongly contributed to by Kohli encouraging the development of a world-class pace bowling attack, which marked a significant shift from the spin-heavy approach of Indian cricket.

Controversies

While Kohli’s energy, passion and intensity contributed to his success as batsman and captain, they also led to numerous confrontations with opposition players, which some believed to be disrespectful and arrogant.

His intense celebrations and assertive body language also drew criticism from conservative cricketing audiences.

Many of these controversies have occurred in Australia, where Kohli enjoyed a love-hate relationship with Australian players and crowds.

Examples include flipping the bird to the crowd, making sandpaper gestures (in reference to the 2018 Australian ball tampering scandal, also known as Sandpapergate) and shoulder-barging young Australian batsman Sam Konstas.

What will his Test legacy be?

For more than a decade, Kohli has been the heartbeat of the Indian Test team, and his retirement marks the end of an era.

He reshaped the mindset of Indian cricket and cultivated a faster, fitter, fiercer, more successful team.

Kohli was also one of the greatest ambassadors of Test cricket, and has played a significant role in ensuring the game remains relevant in an era increasingly dominated by T20 cricket.

He made Test cricket aspirational again because he wanted it to thrive. He knew India needed to dominate the hardest format to be respected.

His social media reach (272 million followers on Instagram and 67.8 million on X) is more than Tiger Woods, LeBron James and Tom Brady combined, and was even referred to by LA2028 Olympics organisers when they announced cricket’s entry into the games.

In recent days, Kohli has been described as “a modern-day giant”, a “provocateur in chief”, and “his generation’s most profound figure”.

Love him or hate him, he elevated the spectacle of Test cricket. His electric energy brought the best out of India and its opponents and made him impossible to ignore when batting or fielding.

As respected cricket writer Peter Lalor noted recently:

Nobody is irreplaceable, but nobody can replace Virat. The Conversation

IPL 2025 mega auction to be held in Jeddah on November 24-25

Mumbai, (IANS) The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction is scheduled to take place on November 24 and 25 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. This year's auction marks the second consecutive year that the event will be held overseas, following the 2024 auction in Dubai.

Notably, the timing of the auction coincides with the third and fourth days of the first Test between India and Australia in Perth.

Unlike the regular player auctions held annually, the mega auction is a grand event that occurs every three years, spanning two days instead of the usual single day. The ten IPL franchises strategise to build their squads for the upcoming three seasons from 2025 to 2027.

A remarkable total of 1,574 players have registered for the auction, comprising 1,165 Indian players and 409 overseas talents, said BCCI. This diverse pool of players includes participants from various countries, including Italy, Canada, the Netherlands, Scotland, the USA, and the UAE, although Full Member nations excluding Pakistan are represented.

The auction will take place at the Abady Al Johar Arena, also known as the Benchmark Arena, and franchises will have the opportunity to fill a total of 204 available slots in their squads, with each team permitted to build a roster of up to 25 players.

On October 31, teams finalised their player retention decisions, with a total of 46 players retained across all ten franchises. The highest retention was made by Sunrisers Hyderabad, who kept wicketkeeper-batter Heinrich Klaasen for a whopping Rs 23 crore.

Both Virat Kohli of Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Nicholas Pooran of Lucknow Super Giants were retained for Rs 21 crore each. Mumbai Indians notably retained their core Indian players, including Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Rohit Sharma, and Tilak Varma, totaling Rs 75 crore.

Each franchise has a total auction purse of INR 120 crore. However, following retention, Punjab Kings boast the largest remaining budget at Rs 110.5 crore, having retained only two uncapped players, Shashank Singh and Prabhsimran Singh, for a total of Rs 9.5 crore. In contrast, Rajasthan Royals enter the auction with the smallest purse of Rs 41 crore after retaining the maximum of six players. Kolkata Knight Riders have a budget of Rs 51 crore.

For the mega auction, IPL teams are allowed to retain up to six players, which includes a maximum of five capped players and two uncapped players. Teams can choose to retain players outright or utilise the Right-to-Match (RTM) options during the auction. The RTM mechanism allows a franchise to buy back a player by matching the highest bid made by another franchise after the initial bidding process concludes.

Punjab Kings, having retained just two players, have the highest number of RTM options available at four. Royal Challengers Bangalore, with three retained players, will have three RTM options, while Delhi Capitals, who retained four players, will have two. Five franchises—Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings, Gujarat Titans, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Lucknow Super Giants—retained five players each and possess just one RTM option.Rajasthan Royals and Kolkata Knight Riders, having retained six players, will not have any RTM options available during the auction. Netravalkar seals USA’s name into cricket history books with upset win over Pakistan

Dallas [USA], June 7: History was created at the Grand Prairie Stadium under the leadership of Monank Patel and with a pace attack spearheaded by Saurabh Netravalkar, guided the USA team to stand victorious over one of the tournament’s favourites, Pakistan.

In a single match, Netravalkar became a sensation on social media with fans started to compare him with Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar’s Patiala House character.

Netravalkar, a 32-year-old left-arm quick, troubled Pakistan batters with his disciplined line and length throughout his four-over spell in the ongoing T20 World Cup.

Despite achieving figures of 2/18 in his four-over spell, Netravalkar made the headlines for defending 18 runs in the Super Over against the hard-hitting duo of Shadab Khan and Iftikhar Ahmed.

Alternate realities and dreams unfolded on Netravalkar’s every delivery in the Super Over. His spellbinding performance took the USA to an elusive maiden T20I win over Pakistan.

Netravalkar featured for the India U-19 team in the World Cup in his youth. Fourteen years later, he shattered the dreams of Pakistan fans who hoped for a winning start ahead of their high-voltage clash against arch-rival India.

He was born in Mumbai and impressed in the domestic circuit with a staggering tally of 30 wickets in six games in the Cooch Behar Trophy in 2008-09.

Netravalkar was also the leading wicket-taker in the Under-19 tri-nation tournament in South Africa with eight wickets.

But in a country brimming with potential and talent, Netravalkar faced challenges in finding the opportunities to showcase his talent.

His fairytale story began in the United States, where he got the chance to represent a country that was on the periphery of leaving its mark in the world of cricket.

Working as a Senior Software Engineer at Oracle, Netravalkar juggled through his life as a cricketer and his corporate life.

Against the mighty Pakistan, he made the Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan dance to his tunes. He orchestrated Pakistan’s downfall by leading the attack in the powerplay of the first innings.

Enjoying movement from the surface, Netravalkar made Rizwaz his first victim of the day.

He asked Babar questions with his precise swinging deliveries. He weaved his magic in the powerplay which ensured Pakistan could muster up only 30/3 on the board.

After leaving an early impression, Netravalkar returned to inflict damage when Pakistan were looking to shift through gears. Iftikhar Ahmed was the centre of Pakistan’s attack.

Monank handed the ball to Netravalkar to bowl the penultimate over and he didn’t disappoint his skipper.

On the first delivery of the 19th over, Netravalkar with a low full toss trapped Iftikhar in front of the stumps which eventually restricted Pakistan to 159/7.

Pakistan made amends with the help of their pacers and managed to raise hope of an unprecedented victory.

With five runs needed from the final ball, Nitish Kumar found the boundary rope to send the game to Super Over.

After the USA managed to put 18/1 on the board, Monank once again showed his faith in Netravalkar.

The 32-year-old showed his experience and restricted Pakistan to 13/1 to seal a 5-run win for the USA. Netravalkar seals USA’s name into cricket history books with upset win over Pakistan
