New Delhi, (IANS) Indian batting stalwart and former skipper Virat Kohli hailed the Women in Blue for their stunning victory over seven-time champions Australia in the ODI World Cup semifinal, calling it a “true display of resilience, belief, and passion.”

India produced a remarkable performance to defeat Australia by five wickets at the DY Patil Stadium on Thursday, punching their ticket to their third ICC Women's Cricket World Cup Final after 2005 and 2017, when they finished as the runners-up behind Australia and England, respectively.

Reacting to the triumph, Kohli took to social media platform X to applaud the team’s efforts. “What a victory by our team over a mighty opponent like Australia. A great chase by the girls and a standout performance by Jemimah in a big game. A true display of resilience, belief, and passion. Well done, Team India!” he wrote.

Jemimah Rodrigues starred in the chase with a stunning knock under pressure, scoring 127 off 134 deliveries as India chased down a record total of 339 in Women's ODI history.

India's 341/5 in the semifinal is also the second-highest score in a Women's ODI run-chase, after their own 369 all-out against the same team in New Delhi last month.

This is the first time a 300-plus total was gunned down in an ODI World Cup knockout - Men's or Women's. The previous highest had come in the Men's CWC 2015 semifinal: 298 by New Zealand vs South Africa in Auckland.

India will now look to carry the same momentum into the final as they chase their maiden Women’s World Cup title. The tournament hosts India will take on South Africa, featured in a Women's World Cup Final for the first time, on Sunday, meaning a team will claim the coveted trophy for the very first time. Ferocity, fitness and fast bowling: how Virat Kohli revolutionised Indian cricket

Kohli’s collision with Sam Konstas during the Boxing Day Test versus Australia.

Vaughan Cruickshank, University of Tasmania and Brendon Hyndman, Charles Sturt University

Virat Kohli announced his retirement from Test cricket on Monday.

While his Instagram message just said this was the “right time”, his poor recent Test form, mental fatigue and desire to spend more time with his family, charity foundation and expanding business empire have been suggested as other influential factors.

During his 14-year Test career “King Kohli” has been the backbone of the Indian batting line-up, and his absence is a huge blow as the Indians prepare to tour England next month.

The megastar scored 9,230 runs in 123 Tests at an average of 46.85, including 30 centuries.

These numbers put him in the top five Indian test batsmen of all time, but his legacy extends far beyond his batting achievements.

Kohli, 36, quit Twenty20 Internationals last year (after India won its second world title). He may continue to play one-day internationals.

Rising to the top of Test cricket

Kohli has been the greatest Indian batsman of his generation.

He made his Test debut in 2011 against the West Indies and played his final match against Australia in January.

He scored centuries against every country he played against, with more than half of these coming overseas.

His seven Test centuries in Australia is the second most by an overseas batsman.

He was at his peak between 2014 and 2019, when he averaged more than 60 in Test cricket and became one of the “fab four” (the world’s best Test batsmen) alongside Steve Smith, Kane Williamson and Joe Root.

This period also included six double-hundreds in 18 months, and 13 months as the number one ranked Test batsman in the world.

Kohli the leader

Kohli is India’s greatest ever Test captain.

His tenure from 2014 to 2022 was a golden age for Indian Test cricket.

India won 40 of 68 Tests (59%) in this period and did not lose a Test series at home. India was the number one ranked Test team in the world from 2016–20 and won its first Test series in Australia in 2018–19.

These statistics make Kohli one of the most successful Test captains of all time.

Beyond these numbers, he was a charismatic and aggressive captain who redefined India’s approach to Test cricket by bringing a more competitive edge to the team.

He drove higher expectations around fitness, training intensity and fast bowling that continue to shape Indian cricket.

Mandatory fitness testing and improved dieting and recovery practices, which redefined the team’s standards, are attributed to Kohli’s leadership.

Similarly, Indian success was strongly contributed to by Kohli encouraging the development of a world-class pace bowling attack, which marked a significant shift from the spin-heavy approach of Indian cricket.

Controversies

While Kohli’s energy, passion and intensity contributed to his success as batsman and captain, they also led to numerous confrontations with opposition players, which some believed to be disrespectful and arrogant.

His intense celebrations and assertive body language also drew criticism from conservative cricketing audiences.

Many of these controversies have occurred in Australia, where Kohli enjoyed a love-hate relationship with Australian players and crowds.

Examples include flipping the bird to the crowd, making sandpaper gestures (in reference to the 2018 Australian ball tampering scandal, also known as Sandpapergate) and shoulder-barging young Australian batsman Sam Konstas.

What will his Test legacy be?

For more than a decade, Kohli has been the heartbeat of the Indian Test team, and his retirement marks the end of an era.

He reshaped the mindset of Indian cricket and cultivated a faster, fitter, fiercer, more successful team.

Kohli was also one of the greatest ambassadors of Test cricket, and has played a significant role in ensuring the game remains relevant in an era increasingly dominated by T20 cricket.

He made Test cricket aspirational again because he wanted it to thrive. He knew India needed to dominate the hardest format to be respected.

His social media reach (272 million followers on Instagram and 67.8 million on X) is more than Tiger Woods, LeBron James and Tom Brady combined, and was even referred to by LA2028 Olympics organisers when they announced cricket’s entry into the games.

In recent days, Kohli has been described as “a modern-day giant”, a “provocateur in chief”, and “his generation’s most profound figure”.

Love him or hate him, he elevated the spectacle of Test cricket. His electric energy brought the best out of India and its opponents and made him impossible to ignore when batting or fielding.

As respected cricket writer Peter Lalor noted recently:

IPL 2025 mega auction to be held in Jeddah on November 24-25

Mumbai, (IANS) The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction is scheduled to take place on November 24 and 25 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. This year's auction marks the second consecutive year that the event will be held overseas, following the 2024 auction in Dubai.

Notably, the timing of the auction coincides with the third and fourth days of the first Test between India and Australia in Perth.

Unlike the regular player auctions held annually, the mega auction is a grand event that occurs every three years, spanning two days instead of the usual single day. The ten IPL franchises strategise to build their squads for the upcoming three seasons from 2025 to 2027.

A remarkable total of 1,574 players have registered for the auction, comprising 1,165 Indian players and 409 overseas talents, said BCCI. This diverse pool of players includes participants from various countries, including Italy, Canada, the Netherlands, Scotland, the USA, and the UAE, although Full Member nations excluding Pakistan are represented.

The auction will take place at the Abady Al Johar Arena, also known as the Benchmark Arena, and franchises will have the opportunity to fill a total of 204 available slots in their squads, with each team permitted to build a roster of up to 25 players.

On October 31, teams finalised their player retention decisions, with a total of 46 players retained across all ten franchises. The highest retention was made by Sunrisers Hyderabad, who kept wicketkeeper-batter Heinrich Klaasen for a whopping Rs 23 crore.

Both Virat Kohli of Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Nicholas Pooran of Lucknow Super Giants were retained for Rs 21 crore each. Mumbai Indians notably retained their core Indian players, including Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Rohit Sharma, and Tilak Varma, totaling Rs 75 crore.

Each franchise has a total auction purse of INR 120 crore. However, following retention, Punjab Kings boast the largest remaining budget at Rs 110.5 crore, having retained only two uncapped players, Shashank Singh and Prabhsimran Singh, for a total of Rs 9.5 crore. In contrast, Rajasthan Royals enter the auction with the smallest purse of Rs 41 crore after retaining the maximum of six players. Kolkata Knight Riders have a budget of Rs 51 crore.

For the mega auction, IPL teams are allowed to retain up to six players, which includes a maximum of five capped players and two uncapped players. Teams can choose to retain players outright or utilise the Right-to-Match (RTM) options during the auction. The RTM mechanism allows a franchise to buy back a player by matching the highest bid made by another franchise after the initial bidding process concludes.

Punjab Kings, having retained just two players, have the highest number of RTM options available at four. Royal Challengers Bangalore, with three retained players, will have three RTM options, while Delhi Capitals, who retained four players, will have two. Five franchises—Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings, Gujarat Titans, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Lucknow Super Giants—retained five players each and possess just one RTM option.Rajasthan Royals and Kolkata Knight Riders, having retained six players, will not have any RTM options available during the auction. "It is with immense pleasure that I welcome Mr. @GautamGambhir as the new Head Coach of the Indian Cricket Team. Modern-day cricket has evolved rapidly, and Gautam has witnessed this changing landscape up close," Jay Shah stated.

In his response to the announcement, Gambir said his goal is to make every Indian proud.

"India is my identity and serving my country has been the greatest privilege of my life. I’m honoured to be back, albeit wearing a different hat. Netravalkar seals USA’s name into cricket history books with upset win over Pakistan

Dallas [USA], June 7: History was created at the Grand Prairie Stadium under the leadership of Monank Patel and with a pace attack spearheaded by Saurabh Netravalkar, guided the USA team to stand victorious over one of the tournament’s favourites, Pakistan.

In a single match, Netravalkar became a sensation on social media with fans started to compare him with Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar’s Patiala House character.

Netravalkar, a 32-year-old left-arm quick, troubled Pakistan batters with his disciplined line and length throughout his four-over spell in the ongoing T20 World Cup.

Despite achieving figures of 2/18 in his four-over spell, Netravalkar made the headlines for defending 18 runs in the Super Over against the hard-hitting duo of Shadab Khan and Iftikhar Ahmed.

Alternate realities and dreams unfolded on Netravalkar’s every delivery in the Super Over. His spellbinding performance took the USA to an elusive maiden T20I win over Pakistan.

Netravalkar featured for the India U-19 team in the World Cup in his youth. Fourteen years later, he shattered the dreams of Pakistan fans who hoped for a winning start ahead of their high-voltage clash against arch-rival India.

He was born in Mumbai and impressed in the domestic circuit with a staggering tally of 30 wickets in six games in the Cooch Behar Trophy in 2008-09.

Netravalkar was also the leading wicket-taker in the Under-19 tri-nation tournament in South Africa with eight wickets.

But in a country brimming with potential and talent, Netravalkar faced challenges in finding the opportunities to showcase his talent.

His fairytale story began in the United States, where he got the chance to represent a country that was on the periphery of leaving its mark in the world of cricket.

Working as a Senior Software Engineer at Oracle, Netravalkar juggled through his life as a cricketer and his corporate life.

Against the mighty Pakistan, he made the Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan dance to his tunes. He orchestrated Pakistan’s downfall by leading the attack in the powerplay of the first innings.

Enjoying movement from the surface, Netravalkar made Rizwaz his first victim of the day.

He asked Babar questions with his precise swinging deliveries. He weaved his magic in the powerplay which ensured Pakistan could muster up only 30/3 on the board.

After leaving an early impression, Netravalkar returned to inflict damage when Pakistan were looking to shift through gears. Iftikhar Ahmed was the centre of Pakistan’s attack.

Monank handed the ball to Netravalkar to bowl the penultimate over and he didn’t disappoint his skipper.

On the first delivery of the 19th over, Netravalkar with a low full toss trapped Iftikhar in front of the stumps which eventually restricted Pakistan to 159/7.

Pakistan made amends with the help of their pacers and managed to raise hope of an unprecedented victory.

With five runs needed from the final ball, Nitish Kumar found the boundary rope to send the game to Super Over.

After the USA managed to put 18/1 on the board, Monank once again showed his faith in Netravalkar.

The 32-year-old showed his experience and restricted Pakistan to 13/1 to seal a 5-run win for the USA. Netravalkar seals USA’s name into cricket history books with upset win over Pakistan

T20 World Cup: Gavaskar bats for Rohit-Virat opening pair against Ireland

IANS Photo

SPORTS 4th June 2024, New Delhi, June 4 (IANS) Indian batting legend Sunil Gavaskar has backed skipper Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli as the opening pair for Men in Blue's opening T20 World Cup clash against Ireland on Wednesday.

Gavaskar named his playing 11 for India's opening encounter in the T20 showpiece at Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York on June 5. Interestingly, the veteran batter dropped pacer Arshdeep Singh from his final 11 and backed all-rounder Shivam Dube to strengthen the batting department.

"I don't really like selecting teams because you can never satisfy everybody there will always be somebody's favourite player who's not being pick but here is my effort to try and pick the 11 for the game against Ireland. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to open the batting along with Yashasvi Jaiswal at three Suryakumar Yadav at four Rishabh Pant at five and at number six, I would have Hardik Pandya," Gavaskar said on Star Sports.

The former India captain picked Kuldeep Yadav as the sole spinner along with all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja.

"Number seven would be Ravindra Jadeja, number eight mean not necessarily in that batting order Shivam Dube number nine Kuldeep Yadav number 10 Jasprit Bumrah and number 11 will be MD Siraj," he added.

Gavaskar's predicted playing XI against Ireland: Rohit Sharma (c), Virat Kohli, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Shivam Dube, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj.

In the recently concluded IPL, Kohli finished as the highest run-getter while opening the batting for Royal Challengers Bengaluru. He slammed 741 runs including a century and five fifties. Cricket-T20 World Cup a boost to sport’s American Dream

Cricket competes for the hearts and wallets of America. PHOTO: Reuters

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Cricket begins a campaign for the hearts and wallets of American fans this week, as the T20 World Cup kicks off on Saturday in Dallas, bringing the best of the sport to less familiar territory.

The United States play Canada in the first match of the tournament co-hosted by the West Indies, while a temporary stadium in Nassau County, New York, hosts its first of eight fixtures on Monday. Lauderhill, Florida, will host four matches.

Cricket boasts billion fans around the globe but few adherents in the lucrative North American market, where fans are more accustomed to watching New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge picking up a bat than Rohit Sharma or Jos Buttler.

“This is the start of a journey,” International Cricket Council (ICC) CEO Geoff Allardice told Reuters. “The awareness that we’re bringing in more elite cricket to the USA is something that’s been a strategic priority for us.”

The journey started with Major League Cricket, which began play in the United States last year, and culminates with the 2028 Los Angeles Games, where cricket will be reintroduced to the Olympic programme for the first time since 1900.

“In the lead up to the Los Angeles Olympics, I think we’ll be continuing to try and raise the profile of cricket, not just for the established cricket fans in the USA but for new fans,” said Allardice.

The tournament, which counts Jamaican track hero Usain Bolt as an ambassador, is a dream come true for U.S. immigrants, who comprise much of the sport’s U.S. fan base and are more used to watching the action on television than in their own backyard.

“I mean, (India have) got some of the biggest names in world sport as part of their team,” said Allardice. “And to be able to get close to them and see them in action, I think it’s an opportunity that’s something that comes along (not) very often for cricket fans in the USA.”The ICC T20 World Cup runs from June 1-29. Cricket-T20 World Cup a boost to sport’s American Dream

NEW DELHI (Reuters) – A robust security plan has been put in place for the T20 World Cup in June, the organisers of the competition said on Monday after reports of a possible threat to the global showpiece surfaced in the Caribbean media.

Trinidad & Tobago Prime Minister Keith Rowley told the ‘Sunday Express’ about a possible security threat to the 20-team event to be co-hosted by West Indies and the United States.

“Given the fact that bad actors can choose to misbehave in any way possible it makes it virtually impossible to completely seal off all opportunities,” he said.

Cricket West Indies and the game’s global governing body, International Cricket Council, sought to allay any such fears in a joint statement.

“We work closely with authorities in the host countries and cities, and continually monitor and evaluate the global landscape to ensure appropriate plans are in place to mitigate any risks identified to our event,” they said.

“We want to assure all stakeholders that safety and security of everyone at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup is our number one priority and we have a comprehensive and robust security plan in place.”The biggest T20 World Cup will be played across nine venues including six in West Indies.Cricket-ICC say ‘robust security plan’ for T20 World Cup amid threat reports

With three half-centuries in five games, Rajasthan batter Riyan Parag is being tipped as a potential pick for India’s T20 World Cup squad but Royals coach Kumar Sangakkara wants the 22-year-old to stay focused on the Indian Premier League. Parag scored 76 in Rajasthan’s three-wicket loss to the Gujarat Titans on Wednesday, bringing his tally to 261 runs for the season. He is second in the race for the ‘orange cap’, awarded to the tournament’s leading scorer, behind Royal Challengers’ Virat Kohli. Sangakkara told reporters that while he did not know if Parag would be picked for the World Cup in the West Indies and United States in June the player’s performances in the IPL showed how good he could be. “That’s way beyond me, but his potential is there for everyone to see,” he added. “For him, it is about concentrating on Rajasthan and this season. “Whatever happens will happen after that. You should never get too ahead of yourself in terms of looking at things too far ahead in the future.“As long as keeps his head down, and is working very hard, batting really well. He’s very organised, he’s worked hard in the off-season. New York, April 2: With the T20 World Cup 2024 nearing, the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, just 30 miles east of Manhattan in New York City, is gearing up to host the fixtures of the mega event.

International Cricket Council (ICC) on Tuesday, April 2, released a video demonstrating the stadium’s continuous progress.

The modular framework for East and West Stands – which will have more than 24,000 fans cheering for their teams at the World Cup – is nearing completion.

The final pieces are being assembled for the premium hospitality and media pavilions in the north and south, along with the outfield of the modular stadium situated in Eisenhower Park, Nassau County, New York.

The stadium will be home to all of India’s group-stage matches, including the high-voltage clash between India and Pakistan on June 9. New York will witness the next chapter of the epic rivalry in T20 World Cups, with the two teams having clashed seven times previously at the event – twice in 2007 including the Final, 2012, 2014, 2016, 2021 and 2022.

The recent encounters between the two teams at the T20 World Cup will be etched in memory for years to come. In 2021, Pakistan recorded their first win against India in World Cups – both 50-over and 20-over while the previous meeting in 2022 was a thrilling affair in front of a capacity Melbourne Cricket Ground which saw India pull off a last-ball heist.

The tournament’s fervor has reached unrivaled heights, as reflected in the soaring demand for tickets. Limited additional tickets for six matches at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York, including India vs. Ireland on June 5 and USA v India on June 12, will be up for grabs now, on Thursday, April 4 at 10 AM ET.

Additionally, limited tickets will also be available for all four matches at the Grand Prairie Cricket Stadium in Texas, including the opening World Cup match featuring USA and Canada on 1 June.

Speaking on the 60-day completion of the stadium, ICC Head of Events, Chris Tetley said: “We are delighted to be marking 60 days to go to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. The project to build a fully modular stadium in Nassau County is a first for international cricket and we are delighted that construction is progressing full as planned. The scale of the venue in the latest time-lapse is impressive and a visit to the stadium is not to be missed,” ICC Head of Events, Chris Tetley said, according to ICC’s official website.

“Fans still have the opportunity to be a part of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in the West Indies and USA, as a limited release of tickets will take place on Thursday, with tickets and/or hospitality available for every match. Fans should visit tickets.t20worldcup.com to make sure they don’t miss out,” Chris Tetley added. Stokes rules himself out of England's T20 World Cup title defence

LONDON - Test captain Ben Stokes has ruled himself out of England's T20 World Cup title defence in the United States and the West Indies, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced Tuesday.

The 32-year-old said he was missing the showpiece tournament in order to make sure he could be a fully-fledged all-rounder in Test cricket.

"Opting out of the IPL (Indian Premier League) and the (T20) World Cup will hopefully be a sacrifice that allows me to be the all-rounder I want to be for the foreseeable future," Stokes said in an ECB statement.

It is understood Stokes has not suffered any setbacks after briefly returning to bowling last month during a Test tour of India where England lost a five-match series 4-1.

There is no lingering discomfort in his left knee following surgery in November.

But although he has long been one of England's leading multi-format cricketers, Stokes has decided to prioritise his role as Test captain, in the hope of being able to play a full role with both bat and ball during six Tests -- three against the West Indies and three against Sri Lanka -- in the upcoming home season.

The first Test against the West Indies at Lord's starts on July 10, less than two weeks after the June 29 T20 World Cup final in Barbados.

That congested Test schedule has prompted Stokes to follow up his withdrawal from the lucrative IPL T20 franchise tournament by also pulling out of the T20 World Cup in a major blow for England white-ball captain Jos Buttler and coach Matthew Mott.

"I'm working hard and focusing on building my bowling fitness back up to fulfil a full role as an all-rounder in all formats of cricket," Stokes said.

"Opting out of the IPL and the World Cup will hopefully be a sacrifice that allows me to be the all-rounder I want to be for the foreseeable future."

He added: "The recent Test tour of India highlighted how far behind I was from a bowling point of view after my knee surgery and nine months without bowling. I'm looking forward to playing for Durham in the County Championship before the start of our Test summer.

"I wish Jos, Motty and all the team the best of luck in defending our title."jdg/ea Stokes rules himself out of England's T20 World Cup title defence

England’s meltdown: India dims UK’s “Bazball” aura

RANCHI-India have remained test cricket’s most tourist-unfriendly destination for over a decade and even England’s gung-ho ‘Bazball’ approach could not change that reality on Monday, Feb. 26, 2024.

India’s five-wicket victory on a spiteful track in Ranchi was not really a cakewalk, thanks to England’s never-say-die spin attack.

But it fetched Rohit Sharma’s team an unassailable 3-1 lead in the five-match series, and consolidated their second place, behind New Zealand, in the World Test Championship standings.Cricket – Fourth Test – India v England – JSCA International Stadium Complex, Ranchi, India – February 26, 2024 India’s Shubman Gill in action REUTERS/Amit Dave

This was India’s 17th consecutive test series win at home, where they have not lost a test series since an Alastair Cook-led England bested them in 2012.

For England, who won the opening test in Hyderabad and have been competitive as well as entertaining in Visakhapatnam and Ranchi — it was their first series defeat under captain Ben Stokes and head coach Brendon ‘Baz’ McCullum.

India will be particularly happy they clinched the series despite the absence of batting mainstay Virat Kohli (personal reason) and frontline seamer Mohammed Shami (injury).

Middle order batter KL Rahul missed tests after hurting himself in the Hyderabad opener, while they rested pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah for the match in Ranchi to manage his workload.

It forced India to field four debutants in the first four matches and three of them — wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel, batter Sarfaraz Khan, and seamer Akash Deep — impressed immediately.

Player-of-the-match Jurel struck 90 in the first innings to kept India alive in the contest and his unbroken 72-run stand with Shubman Gill on Monday helped India pull off a nervy chase.

“Obviously it’s a big challenge to play test cricket. We all know that,” Rohit said.

“Dhruv Jurel, playing his second game, showed solid composure and calmness. He has got the shots as well and played all round the wicket.”

ENGLAND’S MELTDOWN

In a match where there were hardly any dull moments, England’s second innings meltdown left India needing 192 runs to win.

The hosts raced to 84 for no loss before Shoaib Bashir’s triple strikes turned the match on its head reducing India to 120-5.

On a pitch where the ball turned sharply and often kept low, Jurel and Gill proved immovable despite the mounting pressure.

They gritted their teeth through a 30-over stretch when they could not hit a single boundary in a defensive masterclass on a treacherous track.

Gill, an all-format batter known for his clean-hitting prowess, showed immaculate match awareness and did not hit a boundary in the first 119 balls he faced.

When victory was in sight, the elegant right-hander smacked Bashir for two sixes in the same over en route to his fifty.

Several former England captains believe England need to temper their ‘Bazball’ approach, but Stokes was happy with the commitment of his team mates.

“The scoreline says India win by five wickets but I don’t think that gives enough credit to sum up the game as a whole,” Stokes said.

“The series has shown a lot of talent, for us and India. I love test cricket and we’ve seen some young, inexperienced players perform and the future looks bright in this format.”The fifth and final test, scheduled in Dharamsala, begins on March 7. England’s meltdown: India dims UK’s “Bazball” aura

2024 T20 World Cup in the US: Three venues selected

The Ninth Edition of the T20 World Cup will be held from June 4 to 30, 2024 with about 55 matches distributed among the three venues.
The South Asian community in North America will get an opportunity to watch cricket’s biggest stars next year as the International Cricket Council (ICC) picked three venues across the US in New York, Texas and Florida for next year’s Men’s T20 World Cup, the first time the US, not traditionally seen as a cricket-playing nation, will be hosting the tournament. Along with the US, West Indies is the co-host of the tournament. ICC Chief Executive Geoff Allardice said on Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2023, that “the three USA venues that will host part of the biggest ICC Men’s T20 World Cup ever staged, with 20 teams competing for the trophy”. “USA is a strategically important market and these venues give us an excellent opportunity to make a statement in the world’s biggest sport market”, he said. The ICC announced that the tournament will be played in Grand Prairie near Dallas in Texas, Broward County near Miami in Florida, and Nassau County near New York City. The Ninth Edition of the T20 World Cup will be held from June 4 to 30, 2024 with about 55 matches distributed among the three venues. “We explored a number of potential venue options in the country, and we were hugely encouraged by the enthusiasm the event generated amongst prospective hosts, reinforcing the growing awareness around cricket’s massive fanbase and its power to unite diverse communities”, Allardice said. The ICC said that modular stadium technology will be used to augment the capacity of the stadiums at Grand Prairie and Broward to 34,000, and in Nassau County, a completely modular structure – a temporary building – will be erected for the same number of spectators. The ICC said that it has identified potential venues for pre-event matches and training. One of them is the George Mason University in Washington, which is the home for the US Major League Cricket (MLC) team Washington Freedom. The stadium in Broward County began hosting cricket matches in 2008 and last month it hosted the T20 between India and the West Indies. the Grand Prairie stadium, which was once a baseball arena, opened in July after it was refurbished and converted for cricket. When T20 came to New York City, it ran into local politics. New York Mayor Eric Adams lobbied hard to host the T20 event in the city with a temporary cricket stadium at a city park but gave up in the face of opposition led by a Democrat member of the House of Representatives, Ritchie Torres, who belongs to the leftist Progressive Caucus of the party led by Pramila Jayapal. While Adams said that the T20 tournament would bring the city $150 million in economic activity and create thousands of jobs, Ritchie countered that having the stadium built in a park, even if it is temporary, amounted to taking public property for private use. Adams’s Spokesperson Amaris Cockfield said, “New York City put forward a competitive bid reflective of the diversity of our city and the countless immigrant communities who call it home, and we appreciate their support”. But neighboring Nassau County welcomed T20. County head Bruce Blakeman said the county is “excited” to hold “one of the most popular sporting events in the world”. “With more than one billion fans worldwide, this event will attract fans from all around the world to Eisenhower Park”, he said. The temporary stadium will be built at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow.

Morris becomes most expensive signing in IPL auction history

Chris Morris became the most expensive signing in IPL history on Thursday (February 18) with Rajasthan Royals forking out INR 16.25 Crore for the South African all-rounder at the 2021 auction. The signing amount surpassed the INR 16 Crore that Delhi Daredevils paid for Yuvraj Singh in 2015 - the previous record for a player signed at the auction.

The Royals entered the bid battle only at INR 10.25 Crore after Mumbai Indians appeared to have wrested the player from his previous employer - Royal Challengers Bangalore. Instead, the Royals had to contend with another new bidder - the Punjab Kings - who entered at INR 13.50 Crore and went all the way until INR 16 crore before pulling out.

The 33-year-old Morris has previously been a part of Rajasthan Royals in the 2015 season when he scored 311 runs and took 13 wickets from 11 games. In all, he has scored 551 runs at a strike-rate of 157.88 and taken 80 wickets at an economy of 7.81 from 70 IPL games. Morris was an integral member of the Royal Challengers Bangalore side last season even though an abdominal injury curtailed his participation to nine games. He took 11 wickets at an economy of 6.63. He hasn't played competitive cricket since.

Before Morris added INR 6.25 crores to his last year's salary and shattered records along the way, Glenn Maxwell earned his biggest payday at an IPL Auction after RCB won a protracted bidding war with Chennai Super Kings to sign the all-rounder for INR 14.25 crore. The signing amount was nearly INR 4 crores more than what the Australian earned (INR 10.75cr) from Punjab Kings last season.

Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals began the bidding for Maxwell's services but very soon it became apparent that the profile of the player was in line with the all-rounder deficiency in the RCB and CSK squads. This will be Maxwell's fourth different franchise in the IPL having previously played for the Mumbai, Punjab and Delhi franchises.

While Maxwell is an integral member of Australia's T20I squad, used regularly in the top four, he has blown hot and cold in the IPL. His tally of 552 runs at 187.75 SR was instrumental in Punjab's run to the final of the 2014 season. But subsequent seasons have seen his output drop substantially. Having returned to Punjab last year, he managed a total of 108 runs from 13 games, failing to hit a single six along the way.Having lost out one of their primary targets, CSK saw off Punjab's challenge to sign former RCB all-rounder Moeen Ali for INR 7 crore. Shivam Dube was the only Indian player signed in the first session of the auction, with the Royals picking him up for INR 4.4 crore. Source: https://www.daily-bangladesh.com
