Auction of over 96 Kabaddi players from across 14 countries to be held in Mumbai on 20 May, 2014
Saturday, 17 May 2014, Mumbai: Team Mashal Sports, promoter of the Pro-Kabaddi League is all set to kick start the first ever Pro Kabaddi season beginning with an auction for the World's finest Kabaddi talent on May 20, 2014 in Mumbai. The auction to be hosted by the 'Travelling Gavel' Bob Hayton, who has over 30 years of auctioning experience, will put a pool of 96 professional Kabaddi players from across 14 countries, under the hammer for the 8 franchises that constitute the league - Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Jaipur, Kolkata, Mumbai, Pune and Vizag. All owners have been mandated to build a team of 12 players from the three categories, A, B and C, that each of the 96 players are categorized into based on their prior records and achievements. To have evenly balanced teams in the league, all owners would have to choose 4 category 'A' players, 6 category 'B' players and 1 category 'C' player. The twelfth and final player will be picked from a 'State Wild Card' pool. The 32 Category 'A' players will be auctioned in 4 lots; 8 raiders, followed by 8 defenders, 8 all-rounders and concludes with a mixed 8. The 48 Category 'B' players will also be auctioned in 4 lots of 12 each and out of the 12 players in Category C, a total of 8 - one per team - will be allotted through a Double Draw system. The state wild card player will be selected by the individual franchisee based on recommendations of the state associations. The owners who include, entrepreneur and social philanthropist Ronnie Screwvala for Mumbai, The Future Group for Kolkata, Insurekot Sports (Kotak Group) for Pune, and Abhishek Bachchan for Jaipur amongst other distinguished and high profile individuals, will have a tough task at hand but are extremely excited at building a winning team through sensible auction strategies. The Pro Kabaddi league is all set to kick off in Mumbai on the 26th of July with each of the 8 venues hosting 4 days of 'home' team action and all teams playing each other twice for a total of 14 league matches. The knock-out finale will be played in Bangalore between 28th and 31st August 2014. In a significant value addition to Kabaddi, these games will be spectacularly produced and telecasted live on prime time TV by international broadcaster, Star Sports. Speaking on the upcoming auction, Managing Director of Mashal Sports, Charu Sharma said, "It's a very important milestone for all of us who have joined hands to make this boldest revolution in Indian sports, a reality. The team owners are very excited of course, but imagine the enthusiasm and anticipation with which the top Kabaddi players from India and many other countries are waiting for the auction drama to unfold. Kabaddi is a tough, raw, physical sport without thus far, any organised remuneration. Pro Kabaddi is setting the ball rolling to make the sport visible, attractive, professional, remunerative and, for a large section of India's athletic youth, aspirational". Source: Article

Michael Schumacher: Is he being woken from coma?

Michael Schumacher quits Formula 1ONE month after his skiing accident in the French alps, a French newspaper has claimed that Michael Schumacher is being brought out of a medically-induced coma. The 45-year-old former Formula 1 champion struck his head on a rock while skiing with his son on 29 December and has remained in a coma ever since. Though the last official communique from his management said the seven-time F1 champion was "stable", there have been fears he will never regain consciousness. However, the Daily Telegraph quotes a story in L'Equipe that claims the German ace is slowly being brough out of the coma by doctors at the University Hospital of Grenoble in France. Schumacher’s spokeswoman asked the public not to pay attention to “speculation” but did not deny the report, the Telegraph says.  In its report, L'Equipe says Schumacher has "reacted postively" to doctors' efforts to bring him out of the coma. The paper quotes Professor Jean-Luc Truelle, the former head of the neurology department of the Foch hospital in Suresnes, who says that a month is upper limit of when a patient can be awoken safely from an artificial coma. L'Equipe's story conflicts with a report in today's Rheinische Post newspaper that suggests doctors have delayed efforts to bring Schumacher out of his coma. The paper says the rumoured delay raises new fears about the driver's chances of recovery. It quotes a medical expert who says the longer that he "cannot be resuscitated from the medically induced coma the doubts are more justified than ever that he will not be completely healthy. Probably he will have sustained permanent damage." The paper adds that even if Schumacher does come out of his coma the best case scenario is that "a long neurological rehabilitation awaits him". The BBC offers a similarly gloomy prognosis having sought the advice of two medical experts. Professor Gary Hartstein, F1's chief medic between 2005 and 2012, told the BBC that "it is extremely unlikely, and I'd honestly say virtually impossible, that the Michael we knew prior to this fall will ever be back". Colin Shieff, neurosurgeon at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in London, said: "It is still possible to regain consciousness, but this is far from certain. At best, there will be handicaps in respect of communication, memory, mobility and independence. At worst, the patient may remain in 'low arousal state' with little awareness of surroundings." INDIAN BADMINTON LEAGUE – A HUGE SUCCESS: Just concluded Indian Badminton League was a huge success in all manner. Crowd was present in all ties, cheering for home team. There was lot of money involved in the league. The Hyderabad team earned about $500,000 for the victory, while Lucknow received around $200,000. “The IBL is a game-changer as far as Indian badminton is concerned,” said former India international and commentator Sanjay Sharma. “It gave a platform for our juniors to rub shoulders and learn from world stars. “Players earned serious money for a little over a fortnight’s work. Usually they get around $20,000 to $25,000 for winning a tournament. But in the IBL most players got more for just playing in it.” Each team, comprising four foreign players, six Indians and one upcoming Indian junior, played in a double-leg preliminary round, with the top four qualifying for the semi-finals. All ties consisted of five matches — two men’s singles, and one match each in women’s singles, men’s doubles and mixed doubles. To quicken the pace, the standard two-point gap to win a game was abandoned in favour of a race to 21 points for the first two games and 11 points for the decider, if needed. Badminton Powerhouse China backed out due to earlier commitments but it is interesting to see weather they play in next year edition or not? There is a chance that next year edition could have more than six teams. @ IBLIndian Badminton League 2013 Final Match Result and Scores: Hyderabad Hot Shots won the Indian Badminton 2013 Final match against Awadhe Warriors by 3-1. "The format is different and anybody can win in this format and we have a good team. We played the format today at the practice. The shorter the game, the faster it becomes. It is going to be more aggressive and fast badminton," said the
Commonwealth Games gold medallist. "Even it is Lee Chong Wei, we can pull it off in this format. Even if one is 7-0, one can turn the tables. The game can change. Of course it can go against us also, so it is going to be tricky," Jwala added. According to the new scoring system, there will be two breaks of 60 seconds at 7 and 14 points respectively in each of the first two games and if the match is pushed to the decider, then there will be a break after the sixth point. Moreover, while the first two games will be a race to the 21 points, without the standard two-point gap, the player who reaches 11 points first in the decider will emerge as winner of the match. Sai Praneeth, who had spoilt legendary shuttler Taufik Hidayat's farewell at the Indonesia Super Series and also stunned then world number four Yun Hu of Hong Kong in the Singapore Super Series, said the two-breaks in the new format can make the competition more open in the IBL. "It will be a level playing field in this format. We can expect to beat higher players. But strategising will be different and difficult. It will take a few games to understand that. In the 21-point decider, even if you are down you can make a comeback but in 11-point third game, you have to keep attacking. You don't have time to think much," said the world number 37 Indian. H S Prannoy, another men's singles player, also felt the new format will act as an advantage for the Indian players and they can hope to beat top players such as Lee Chong Wei. "Players such as Tien Minh Nguyen used to play long matches. It is more rallies. These players don't have much strokes, it is more fitness," he said. "Even with Lee Chong Wei we will have an advantage in this 11-point format. With Lee you can't play the whole match at his pace, but in this format, you can have a better chance by going full out in the 11-point third game," Prannoy said. Krrish Delhi Smashers will take on Pune Pistons in the opening match of the IBL. Source: The Asian AgeImageAamir, Deepika to join Badminton LeagueBollywood

Saina Nehwal in Hyderabad, Lee Chong Wei goes to Mumbai in IBL auction: Saina Nehwal, who created Histrory at last year's Olympics by becoming the first Indian badminton player to win an Olympic medal was one of the top draws at the path-breaking Indian Badminton League. The 23-year old, who is based out of Hyderabad, had expressed her desire to play for her home team. Her wish was granted as the Hyderabad based franchise, Hyderabad Masters lapped her up got a whopping $120000. The Indian Badminton League (IBL), modelled along the lines of its cricket counterpart, the cash-rich Indian Premier League (IPL), has been touted as an idea that will bring about a radical change in the game of Badminton in India. Apart from Saina Nehwal, some of the other big Indian names who will be participating in IBL are Parupalli Kashyap, P V Sindhu, etc. Saina, however, wasn't the biggest buy at the auction. World Number One, Lee Chong Wei, often criticised for being an underachiver was bought by the Mumbai franchise for $135000. The Malaysian, who is counted amongst the greatest players of all time had earlier expressed a great deal of enthusiasm at the prospect of participating in the IBL. Saina, Lee Chong Wei fetch top prices at IBL player auction Hyderbad buys Saina for USD 120000 while Mumbai laps up Lee Chong Wei for USD 135000 New Delhi: Saina Nehwal's wish to be in her home team came true as Hyderabad Hotshots bought the Indian star for USD 120,000 but world number one Lee Chong Wei proved to be the costliest, going to Mumbai Masters for USD 135,000 in the inaugural Indian Badminton League's players
auction here today. Saina, one among the six icon players whose base price was set at USD 50,000 (Rs 29,70,482), had stated that she would prefer to be either in Hyderabad or Lucknow with a slight tilt towards her hometown. Her wish was fulfilled with Hyderabad picking her up after making a bid of USD 120,000 (Rs 71,27,796 approx). But it was Malaysian icon Lee Chong Wei, who got the franchises really excited, triggering a bidding war between Mumbai Masters and the Delhi Smashers. Eventually, Mumbai, which has cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar among its consortium of owners, came out trumps to bag the biggest international name in fray at the auction for Rs. 8,019,032 approximately. Commonwealth Games bronze-medallist Parupalli Kashyap, also an icon player, was picked up by Banga Beatsfor USD 75,000 (Rs 4,455,622 approx). Rising star P V Sindhu was the big buy netted by Lucknow Warriors for USD 80,000 (Rs 4,752,664 approx), while feisty doubles star Jwala Gutta went to Delhi Smashers at USD 31,000 (Rs 1,841,699). Jwala's base price was USD 25,000 (Rs 1,485,241). In another interesting bidding war between Delhi and Pune Piston, little-known Vietnamese Tinh Minh Nyugen was sold to the latter at USD 44,000 (Rs 2,614,024), way above his base price of USD 25,000. The franchises owners -- PVP Group (Hyderabad), BOP Group (Bangalore), Krrish Group (Delhi), Sahara (Lucknow), Burman family (Pune) and consortium of cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar, Telugu film star Akkineni Nagarjuna and former cricketer V Chamundeshwarnath (Mumbai) -- have a cap of approximately USD 275,000 to fill the slot of 66 players. The six franchises will buy a total of 11 players each. Six of these will be India, four foreign players and one Indian junior player.

League (IBL) said Saturday Star Sports 2 and ESPN would be its official broadcaster. All 90 matches - 75 league, 10 semifinals and five finals -- will be shown live on Star Sports 2 and ESPN. The $1 million league which features six franchisee-based city teams kicks off from Aug 14. Commenting on this association, ESPN Software India Pvt. Ltd. chief operating officer Vijay Rajput said, "The IBL fits in well with our overall strategy. It is a unique concept and has the potential of attracting a large fan base for badminton across the country given the presence of the best of national and international talent." Speaking on the occassion, Badminton Association of India (BAI) president Akhilesh Das Gupta said, "We welcome Star Sports into the IBL fraternity and I am confident that the live telecast of IBL on Star Sports 2 and ESPN will take quality badminton action to millions of homes in India and further boost the game of badminton." Playing rules tweaked for Indian Badminton League: New  Delhi,  July  21  (IANS)  The rules of the upcoming Indian Badminton League (IBL) have been tweaked to make the game more competitive and attractive for the spectators. Unlike international rules, where the victor needs a two-point gap to win the match, in IBL the player who first  reaches  21  points  in  the  first
two games will win the match, irrespective if the opponent is on 20 points. But if the match goes into the third and deciding game, it will be an 11-point game instead of 21. Here too, the winner will not need a two-point gap to triumph. Also, there will be two one-minute breaks in the first two games when either shuttler reaches the 7-point mark and the 14-point mark first. In the third game, there will be a 60-second break when a player reaches the 6-point mark first. There will be an additional two-minute break between the games. "This is a new format and should be interesting. The slots will be used to show advertisements to generate revenue and the players will also get a break," a Badminton Association of India (BAI) official told IANS Sunday on condition of anonymity. To add to that, all the five matches in the tie will be played out during the group stages even if one team routs the other 3-0 in the first three matches. However, the same won't be the case in the knockouts, where the team to win the first three matches proceeds to the next round. Former national champion U. Vimal Kumar seemed excited about the new format. "It will be interesting. This could bring up a few surprises. You can see some small player topple a big name because the pauses could also break the momentum of any player," said the Olympian, who has been roped in as the coach of the Banga Beats. Delhi Smashers coach Rashid Sidek, of Malaysia, however, disagreed that the new rules will affect the game. "I don't think it will make much of a difference. All top players like Lee Chong Wei have the ability to stay focussed, otherwise they wouldn't be where they are. Surprises are a part of the game. It is certainly interesting and we will see how it goes," the 1996 Atlanta Olympics bronze medallist told IANS. Source: Article1-2-3Image1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10
