Glasgow (Scotland), (IANS) Ahmedabad, India, has officially been confirmed as the host city for the Centenary Commonwealth Games in 2030, marking a historic milestone for the Commonwealth Sport Movement. This will be the second time that India will host the Commonwealth Games after New Delhi in 2010.

The decision confirms that the world’s most populous nation will host the landmark edition of the Games after delegates from 74 Commonwealth member nations and territories approved India’s bid at the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in Glasgow on Wednesday.

India put forward a strong vision for the 2030 Games, with Ahmedabad, Gujarat, as the main host city. This plan builds on the groundwork laid by Glasgow 2026 and allows India to celebrate its centenary in a memorable way.

Moments after Amdavad was chosen to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, 20 Garba dancers and 30 Indian dhol drummers spontaneously performed in the General Assembly Hall. Their vibrant cultural display surprised delegates and offered a glimpse of the heritage and pride that athletes and fans can anticipate from a Games held in Gujarat, India.

Garba is Gujarat’s traditional folk dance. The performance included members of Glasgow’s Indian community and individuals from other parts of the Commonwealth. It showcased both diversity and unity as part of the Movement, marking the journey from the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games to its Centenary edition.

The inaugural Commonwealth Games took place in 1930 in Hamilton, Canada. At the latest Games in Birmingham, England, in 2022, Australia led the medal tally. The top five nations also included England, Canada, India, and New Zealand.

Donald Rukare, President of Commonwealth Sport, said, “This is the start of a new golden era for Commonwealth Sport. After a 'Games reset', we head to Glasgow 2026 in fantastic shape to welcome the 74 teams of the Commonwealth before setting our sights on Amdavad 2030 for a special Centenary edition of the Commonwealth Games.

“India brings scale, youth, ambition, rich culture, enormous sporting passion, and relevance, and I'm delighted to report strong interest from a range of nations to host the 2034 Games and beyond. We start our next century for the Commonwealth Games in good health.”

PT Usha, President of the Commonwealth Games Association of India, said, “We are deeply honoured by the trust shown by Commonwealth Sport. The 2030 Games will not only celebrate a hundred years of the Commonwealth Movement but also lay the foundation for the next century. It will bring together Athletes, communities, and cultures from across the Commonwealth in a spirit of friendship and progress.”

Aside from confirming the hosts for 2030, Commonwealth Sport also announced that 15 to 17 sports will be included at Amdavad 2030.

The Amdavad 2030 team will collaborate with Commonwealth Sport and the International Federation community to develop a vibrant and engaging sports programme that resonates locally while appealing globally.

This will follow Commonwealth Sport’s recent Sport Programme Review, which outlines the sports included in the Commonwealth Games: Athletics and Para Athletics, Swimming and Para Swimming, Table Tennis and Para Table Tennis, Bowls and Para Bowls, Weightlifting and Para Powerlifting, Artistic Gymnastics, Netball, and Boxing.

The process to finalise the remaining sports in the programme will begin next month, with the complete line-up for the Centenary Games being announced next year.

The sports being considered include: Archery, Badminton, 3x3 Basketball and 3x3 Wheelchair Basketball, Beach Volleyball, Cricket T20, Cycling, Diving, Hockey, Judo, Rhythmic Gymnastics, Rugby Sevens, Shooting, Squash, Triathlon, Para Triathlon, and Wrestling. The host may also suggest up to two new or existing sports.

Duncan Scott, multiple Commonwealth champion swimmer, said, “The Commonwealth Games are a special part of my career. Taking part in the home Games is incredible, so I’m excited for Indian Athletes who’ll get to do that in 2030. And for everyone else, we’ve got an opportunity to expand our horizons and experience the ambition and colour of Amdavad and India. I loved the chance to compete in the Gold Coast in Australia as part of a travelling Team Scotland.

“We look forward to handing over the Games to Amdavad in great shape after welcoming all to Glasgow next year.”

Jaismine Lamboria, World Champion Boxer from India, said, “It truly is a proud moment to see India become the host of the Centenary Commonwealth Games. Amdavad will give Athletes and fans a very warm and vibrant welcome, and having the opportunity to compete on home soil in 2030 will be a huge motivation for me and for many others. I’m excited for the next decade for Indian sport.”

World Boxing Cup Finals: Minakshi, Preeti, Arundhati, Nupur win gold as Indian women shine bright on historic final day

Greater Noida (Uttar Pradesh), (IANS): Minakshi (48kg), Preeti (54kg), Arundhati Choudhary (70kg), and Nupur (80+kg) powered to gold medals as India’s women boxers delivered riches on a landmark day for the nation at the World Boxing Cup Finals 2025 in front of a packed house at the Shaheed Vijay Singh Pathik Sports Complex.

Their triumphs came in several key divisions that will feature at the 2028 Olympic Games—where boxing moves to full gender parity—highlighting India’s growing competitive strength on the road to Los Angeles.

Their dominant performances capped a remarkable campaign for the host nation, which also saw Jadumani Singh, Pawan Bartwal, Abhinash Jamwal, and Ankush Phangal finish with well-earned silver medals, underlining India’s rising stature across both men’s and women’s Olympic-class weight categories.. Seven more Indians will be fighting for gold in Session 7, including reigning World Champion Jaismine Lamboira, two-time former World Champion Nikhat Zareen, and dual World Boxing Cup medalist Hitesh Gulia.

Minakshi set the tone for the day with a near-flawless 5:0 win over reigning Asian Champion Farzona Fozilova, unleashing her trademark aggression from the opening bell. The World Champion combined speed with razor-sharp accuracy, cracking open the bout with a blistering left–right combination in Round 1 and maintaining complete control through assertive jabs, clean counters, and airtight defence.

Preeti followed with another dominant 5:0 performance, overpowering Italy’s World Championship medallist Sirine Charrabi with relentless pressure. She repeatedly drove Charrabi into the corner, landing crisp face punches and dictating the tempo through superior footwork and sustained attacking bursts.

Arundhati Choudhary—former Youth World Champion—delivered one of the day’s most complete performances, dismantling Uzbekistan’s Aziza Zokirova with a commanding 5:0 win. Returning after 18 months, she blended sharp offence with disciplined defence, scoring heavily with decisive jabs and maintaining total tactical control across all three rounds. The gold surge continued as Nupur edged Uzbekistan’s Sotimboeva Oltinoy 3:2 in a tense, tactical showdown. In the men’s finals, India picked four silver medals. Jadumani Singh (50kg) fought with heart but fell 1:4 to Uzbekistan’s Asilbek Jalilov, while Pawan Bartwal (55kg), who had produced one of the tournament’s biggest upsets earlier in the week, went down to Samandar Olimov. Abhinash Jamwal (65kg) lost a spirited contest 1:4 to Japan’s seasoned Shion Nishiyama, and Ankush Phangal (80kg) was bested by England’s defending World Cup champion Shittu Oladimeji. Messi mess continues: Indian fans left waiting as Argentina cancels November visit to Kerala

IANS Photo

Thiruvananthapuram, (IANS) The Messi conundrum surrounding Argentina’s much-hyped visit to India has taken a fresh twist, with sponsors confirming that ace footballer Lionel Messi and his team will not be coming to Kerala in November. The clarification came soon after the Argentina Football Association (AFA) announced that the national team would play only in Angola next month.

The confirmation has poured cold water on weeks of excitement in India with fans eagerly awaiting the football G.O.A.T's arrival in the country and both the Kerala government and private sponsors announcing a high-profile friendly match in Kochi on November 17.

According to reports in the Argentine media, AFA officials attributed the cancellation to Kerala’s “lack of readiness” and delays in completing logistical arrangements within the agreed timeline.

While organisers have now suggested that the visit may be rescheduled to March 2026, the latest development has once again raised questions about planning, coordination and communication between the stakeholders.

A political controversy has also erupted, with the Congress leadership accusing the state government of prematurely announcing the event without formal confirmation from the AFA.

The episode underscores a recurring challenge in international sports engagements — balancing political optics with procedural clarity.

For Indian fans, the setback is particularly disappointing, given the massive local fan base for Argentina and Messi in Kerala and in the country.

This would have been Messi’s first match in India since 2011, when he captained Argentina against Venezuela at Kolkata’s Salt Lake Stadium, a landmark game that marked his debut as national captain.

For now, the wait for Messi continues and with it, Kerala’s hopes of scripting a historic football moment remain in suspense. With the next likely date of March 2026 now surfacing, it remains to be seen if that is going to be feasible as during that time Kerala and the entire political leadership will be busy with the Assembly polls which in most likelihood will happen in April or latest by May. True display of belief and passion: Kohli lauds Women in Blue's heroics in WC semifinal

Navi Mumbai: India team celebrate after defeating Australia to qualify for the finals of the ICC Women’s World Cup ODI at DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on Thursday, October 30, 2025. (Photo: IANS)

New Delhi, (IANS) Indian batting stalwart and former skipper Virat Kohli hailed the Women in Blue for their stunning victory over seven-time champions Australia in the ODI World Cup semifinal, calling it a “true display of resilience, belief, and passion.”

India produced a remarkable performance to defeat Australia by five wickets at the DY Patil Stadium on Thursday, punching their ticket to their third ICC Women's Cricket World Cup Final after 2005 and 2017, when they finished as the runners-up behind Australia and England, respectively.

Reacting to the triumph, Kohli took to social media platform X to applaud the team’s efforts. “What a victory by our team over a mighty opponent like Australia. A great chase by the girls and a standout performance by Jemimah in a big game. A true display of resilience, belief, and passion. Well done, Team India!” he wrote.

Jemimah Rodrigues starred in the chase with a stunning knock under pressure, scoring 127 off 134 deliveries as India chased down a record total of 339 in Women's ODI history.

India's 341/5 in the semifinal is also the second-highest score in a Women's ODI run-chase, after their own 369 all-out against the same team in New Delhi last month.

This is the first time a 300-plus total was gunned down in an ODI World Cup knockout - Men's or Women's. The previous highest had come in the Men's CWC 2015 semifinal: 298 by New Zealand vs South Africa in Auckland.

India will now look to carry the same momentum into the final as they chase their maiden Women’s World Cup title. The tournament hosts India will take on South Africa, featured in a Women's World Cup Final for the first time, on Sunday, meaning a team will claim the coveted trophy for the very first time. FIFA WC qualifiers: Ronaldo sets another record but Hungary deny Portugal early qualification

Credit: FIFA

Lisbon, (IANS) Cristiano Ronaldo set another record but Portugal conceded a last-gasp equaliser against Hungary to keep their dreams of direct qualification for the FIFA World Cup on hold.

Ronaldo became the outright leading marksman in World Cup qualifying history. His two goals – the first his 40th in qualifying to set the landmark – put Portugal on the verge of qualification but Dominik Szoboszlai struck late to deny Portugal qualification for a seventh successive global finals after a 2-2 draw.

Attila Szalai silenced Lisbon by heading home the opener, but the 40-year-old tapped in crosses from full-backs Nelson Semedo and Nuno Mendes to swing Roberto Martinez’s charges ahead. The woodwork denied Bruno Fernandes and Ruben Dias enhancing the lead and Szalai equalising after the restart.

Hungary kept themselves five points behind Portugal, and in with a chance of the section’s automatic ticket, when Daniel Lukacs did majestically to set up Dominik Szoboszlai.

Portugal’s next chance to confirm their place in the World Cup finals tournament next year will be against Republic of Ireland in Dublin next month.

Republic of Ireland claimed their first win in World Cup qualifying after edging out 10-man Armenia at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin.

Visiting captain Tigran Barseghyan was given his marching orders in the 52nd minute of this contest before Evan Ferguson combined with Will Smallbone to score the only goal of a cagey encounter.

Meanwhile, Cote d'Ivoire have qualified for the FIFA World Cup 26. The Elephants secured their place at the tournament in Canada, Mexico and the USA on Tuesday, with a 3-0 victory over Kenya in their final Group F fixture ensuring they topped the section ahead of Gabon. They will compete in the World Cup for the first time since Brazil 2014, where they were eliminated in the group stage, as they have been in each of their appearances to date. Real Madrid beat Levante to maintain 100 percent start to La Liga season

Credit: Real Madrid

Madrid, (IANS) Real Madrid retained its perfect record at the top of La Liga with a 4-1 win away to recently promoted Levante

Excellent goals from Vinicius Jr., back in the starting 11 after reacting badly to being substituted at the weekend, and Franco Mastantuono after 27 and 37 minutes put Real Madrid 2-0 up at halftime.

Etta Eyong nodded Levante back into the game after 53 minutes, but another Kylian Mbappe penalty in the 63rd minute restored Madrid's two-goal lead. A second goal from the Frenchman two minutes later meant there was no doubt where the points were heading.

"We've just finished the game and I was fully focused on today's match and where we're headed. We'll start thinking about the derby from tomorrow. It was a really complete team performance, Vini was decisive and put on a really good display," Madrid coach Xabi Alonso said.

Villarreal won 2-1 away to Sevilla, with Manor Solomon scoring the winning goal on the break five minutes from time. Tani Oluwaseyi had put Villarreal ahead after 16 minutes and the visitors dominated the first half, before Djibril Sow equalized in the 50th minute. Sevilla then looked the more likely side to win until Solomon's late strike.

In the early kickoffs, Athletic Bilbao drew 1-1 at home to Girona, with the visitors taking a first-half lead through Azzedine Ounahi's ninth-minute effort that went in off the underside of the crossbar.

Athletic made four changes at halftime and Mikel Jauregizar leveled the match with a powerful shot from outside the penalty area three minutes into the second half.Javi Puado scored a 96th-minute equalizer as Espanyol twice came back from behind to claim a point at home to Valencia. Arnaut Danjuma put Valencia ahead after 15 minutes, with Leandro Cabrera leveling in the 59th minute. Hugo Duro restored Valencia's lead just three minutes later, before Puado's late strike denied them a second win in four days. "Every time I run the 5,000m, I am pushed out of my comfort zone. The 1,500m is still my speciality, but for the next world championships, I want to run the 5k again. My goal was to win both, but I will settle for one."

(Photo: IANS)

Tokyo, September 16 (IANS) Indian javelin star Neeraj Chopra, who cherishes Tokyo’s National Stadium as the stage of his historic Olympic gold in 2021, will return to the venue on Wednesday, aiming for another milestone at the 2025 World Athletics Championships.

Chopra enters the competition as the defending champion, having created history in Budapest two years ago by becoming India’s first-ever world champion in athletics with a throw of 88.17m. Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem had secured silver on that occasion with an effort of 87.82m.

However, the cross-border rivalry intensified in Paris last year when Nadeem dethroned Chopra as Olympic champion with a massive throw of 92.97m, while the Indian settled for a silver with the best effort of 89.45m.

World No. 2 Chopra will be aiming for his third medal at the World Championships, having previously clinched silver in Eugene, USA, three years ago. Earlier this season, he finally crossed the 90m mark with a national record throw of 90.23m in the Diamond League event in Doha, Qatar. However, that effort currently ranks him third on the world list, behind Germany’s Julian Weber and Brazil’s Luiz da Silva.

The men’s javelin field looks stacked, with three athletes having surpassed 90m this year and another five who have done so in past seasons.

A total of 37 competitors, divided into two groups, will compete for 12 spots in Thursday’s final, with the automatic qualification standard set at 84.50m. Chopra, 27, begins his campaign in Group A, while Nadeem is placed in Group B.

India will also be represented by Sachin Yadav (Group A), along with Rohit Yadav and Yashvir Singh (Group B).

Leading the global contenders is Julian Weber, the in-form Diamond League champion and current season leader with a throw of 91.51m. The field also boasts two-time world champion Anderson Peters of Grenada, 2012 Olympic gold medallist Keshorn Walcott (Trinidad and Tobago), and Tokyo 2020 silver medallist Jakub Vadlejch of Czechia, making the competition in Tokyo even more formidable.

Asian Games gold medallist Annu Rani will spearhead India’s challenge in the women’s javelin throw.

Rani, who has recorded a season-best effort of 62.59m, faces a formidable field that includes reigning World Champion Haruka Kitaguchi of Japan, Austria’s world leader Victoria Hudson with a 67.76m throw, and Serbia’s Adriana Vilagos, who has reached 67.22m this season.

The women’s javelin qualifiers are set to begin on Friday, with the medal round scheduled for Saturday.

World Athletics Men's javelin throw schedule: Men's javelin throw qualification for Group A will begin at 3:40 pm, while the Group B throws will commence at 5:15 pm on Wednesday. The final of the event will start at 3:53 pm on Thursday.

India's Suraj Narredu makes history with Shergar Cup 2025 win at Ascot

New Delhi, August 11 (IANS): Suraj Narredu-led Team Asia has brought home the Shergar Cup 2025 trophy. From India to Ascot, Narredu delivered on his promise to leave a global mark. Alongside Japanese jockeys Ryusei Sakai and Mirai Iwata, he won two of six races and secured a crucial second place, snatching the win by just one point ahead of Europe.

Asia prevailed 68–67 over Europe, with Great Britain & Ireland third on 62 and the Rest of the World on 55. Hugh Bowman clinched the Silver Saddle as the leading jockey.

Trained by Dylan Cunha, Narredu piloted Fireblade at the prestigious Ascot Racecourse – winning Shergar Cup Stayers. Sakai also scored aboard Prince of India in the Shergar Cup Sprint.

In a steadily driven two-mile event, the 40-year-old made his move early, keeping every opponent at bay by almost two lengths. “Being a debut team and winning today is icing on the cake. I know this is a new team, but I’m sure in the future they’ll be a force to be reckoned with,” he said.

With over 2,400 career wins, Narredu has left no soil untouched by his excellence. His passion for carrying the Narredu name like a crown - just as his father and uncle once did - adds deeper value to his game.

“It has been a dream come true. I had always imagined what it would feel like, but now that I’m living it, it’s surreal. This is one of the greatest moments in my life- the one I’d always been waiting for. I feel honoured to take this win back to my country,” he added. To mark the milestone, Narredu celebrated with a signature flying dismount for the first time - a move made famous by his idol Frankie Dettori - lighting up the crowd and leaving fans smiling from ear to ear. I don't want to put any pressure on myself for 90m: Neeraj Chopra

Paris: Men's Javelin silver medalist Neeraj Chopra of India on the podium during the medal ceremony at the Paris Olympics 2024, in Paris, France, on Friday, August 9, 2024. (Photo: IANS/Biplab Banerjee)

Ostrava (Czech Republic), (IANS) As he builds towards his ultimate goal — a top finish at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo — Olympic and World Champion Neeraj Chopra says he isn’t placing himself under the pressure of chasing 90-metre throws every time he steps out, though he’s quietly confident ahead of the Golden Spike meet in Ostrava on Tuesday.

“I feel good, but I don't want to put any pressure on myself for 90m. But I'll try really hard,” Chopra said told reporters ahead of Tuesday’s Golden Spike Athletics meet . “I've already thrown 90m this year after a little bit more improvement in technique. So let's see when it comes next time, but I am ready.”

The 27-year-old javelin superstar, fresh off his Paris Diamond League win (88.16m) over German Julian Weber, is focusing more on technical refinement than chasing numbers every meet. “Recently we've done a good training in Nymburk (Czech Republic), so I'll do my best here in Ostrava,” he added.

Part of Chopra’s excitement at competing in Ostrava stems from childhood memories. “When I was a kid, I watched a lot of videos and photos of athletes like Usain Bolt competing here. I came last year but I didn't compete because of injury,” he recalled.

His primary focus, though, remains the World Championships in Tokyo from September 13 to 21 — where he hopes to add to his gold from the previous edition. “Main goal for the season is obviously World Championships in Tokyo,” said Chopra.

The Haryana athlete is also looking forward to a milestone moment on home soil — the inaugural Neeraj Chopra Classic in Bengaluru on July 5. “This will be my first really serious competition in India with international athletes. I still have to manage a lot of things before competition, but it will be a good experience,” he said. “Now it would not be good if I say no to people. And I'm happy that now in India people recognise other sports than cricket.”

Working with Czech legend Jan Zelezny, the three-time Olympic gold medallist and world record holder, has been a major boost. “I am really happy to work with such a great athlete and coach,” Chopra said. The growing popularity of their partnership hasn’t gone unnoticed. “When I competed at Diamond League in Doha, there were a lot of Indian people who wanted to take pictures with Jan. And they are sometimes… you know… very intense. So I was a bit worried about him. But he left to the hotel quickly,” he laughed.Zelezny, for his part, is pleased with the progress. “I am happy about the situation. It's important for javelin and throws in general, as athletics is not only about sprints,” the Czech great said. “Neeraj opened the doors to other countries, it's great for our sport. Kylian Mbappe wins European Golden Boot

Kylian Mbappe has won the 2024/25 European Golden Boot thanks to his 31-goal haul in La Liga, leading the way with 62 points, Football Today reports.

Mbappe scored eight fewer league goals than Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyokeres, who was, however, handicapped by having his goals multiplied by a coefficient of 1.5 as opposed to Mbappe’s 2.

The 26-year-old netted a double in Real Madrid’s final game of the season on Saturday against Real Sociedad to take the lead in the Golden Boot race.

Nonetheless, he would have been looking anxiously over his shoulders earlier today with Mohamed Salah in action against Crystal Palace.

Salah needed three goals to share the award with Mbappe and four to win it outrightly, but could only find the back of the net once in Liverpool’s 1-1 draw.

A whopping six goals behind at kick-off, Robert Lewandowski was the last of Mbappe’s competitors to take to the field on Sunday and scored twice inside the opening 17 minutes to give himself a glimmer of hope.

However, the Poland international missed several opportunities to add to his tally and had been substituted off by the time Barcelona got a late penalty, which Dani Olmo converted.

Lewandowski ended the season on 27 league goals, four behind Mbappe, confirming the Frenchman’s status as winner of the European Golden Boot award.

Mbappe is the first player in football history to win the Champions League, World Cup and European Golden Boot awards, further cementing his status as one of the world’s best players.

While the season ended relatively well for Mbappe on a personal level, he would have liked more collective glory to go along with it, as Madrid could only manage to win the European Super Cup and the FIFA Intercontinental Cup.Under the tutelage of newly appointed manager Xabi Alonso, Los Blancos will be looking to go all the way in June’s Club World Cup tournament. Walsh swims second-fastest 100m butterfly in history

CHICAGO - Gretchen Walsh clocked a stunning 54.76sec to win the 100m butterfly at the US Swimming Championships on Thursday, coming up just shy of her own world record in a comfortable victory over Olympic champion Torri Huske.

Walsh, who settled for silver behind Huske at the Paris Games last year, had lowered her own world record twice at the Fort Lauderdale Pro Swim last month, becoming the first woman to dip below 55 seconds with a world mark of 54.60sec in the finals there.

She was well under world-record pace when she turned in 25.19sec, and even though she couldn't lower the mark, she posted the second-fastest time in history and had plenty to hold off Huske, who finished 1.8sec back in 56.61sec.

"I just like pushing myself past boundaries that I never thought possible," Walsh, who now owns the top seven times in history, told NBC Sports.

She lined up a second individual event at the World Championships in Singapore July 11-August 3 after winning the 50m fly with the fourth-fastest time ever on Wednesday.

Katharine Berkoff also turned up the heat, posting the second-fastest 50m backstroke time in history with her win in 26.97sec. She broke the American record of Regan Smith, who was second in 27.20.

Lilly King, a three-time Olympic gold medallist and an 11-time world champion who has announced this will be her last season, won the 50m breaststroke in 29.88sec.

Bobby Finke ran down Carson Foster to win the men's 400m individual medley in 4min 07.46sec.

He sliced more than two seconds off his personal best to get the better of Paris Olympics bronze medallist Foster, who finished in 4:07.92.

Finke, two-time Olympic gold medallist and world record-holder in the 1,500m freestyle, indicated last month that he wouldn't swim the 400 medley in Singapore even if he qualified because of a scheduling conflict with the events.

"I've got to talk to my coaches about it, but we kind of have a plan in mind," he said.

Emma Weyant, silver medallist at the Tokyo Olympics and bronze medallist at the Paris Games last year, won the women's 400m individual medley in 4:34.81 with Katie Grimes second in 4:37.22.

Shaine Casas led all the way in winning the men's 100m butterfly in 50.51sec.Quintin McCarty won the men's 50m backstroke in 24.34sec with Casas second in 24.44. Walsh swims second-fastest 100m butterfly in history

Canada, US, Mexico brace for World Cup extravaganza

MEXICO CITY - The largest and most complex World Cup in history kicks off in just over a year's time, with the United States, Canada and Mexico co-hosting the football extravaganza against a backdrop of political tension triggered by Donald Trump.

Forty-eight teams and millions of fans are set to descend on North America for the first-ever World Cup shared by three nations, with the tournament getting underway on June 11 next year.

In theory, the 23rd edition of the most popular sporting spectacle on the planet has all the makings of a successful tournament.

An array of venues ranging from Mexico's iconic Estadio Azteca to the glittering $5 billion SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles will play host to 104 games spread over nearly six weeks.

The United States will host the bulk of those fixtures -- 78 -- with Canada and Mexico staging 13 each.

All games from the quarter-finals onwards will be held in the United States, with the tournament culminating in the final at New Jersey's 82,500-seater MetLife Stadium on 19 July 2026.

American officials believe the return of the World Cup to the country -- 32 years after the United States hosted the 1994 finals -- could represent a watershed moment for football in the country.

"The World Cup is going to raise the attention of the sport in ways that nobody ever dreamed of," said Don Garber, the commissioner of Major League Soccer.

FIFA's President Gianni Infantino, meanwhile, has been hyping next year's finals as the equivalent of "104 Super Bowls", contrasting the World Cup's estimated six billion viewers to the 120 million or so who tune in for the climax of the NFL season.

There are historical precedents which suggest the hype might be justified. The 1994 World Cup in the United States remains the best-attended World Cup in history, with an average of 68,600 fans flocking to each game.

Yet while organisers eagerly anticipate a commercial success, with one FIFA estimate suggesting it could generate a mammoth $11-billion in revenues, questions over other aspects of the tournament remain.

The 48 teams -- up from 32 in 2022 -- will be spread into 12 groups of four, with the top two teams in each group advancing to the knockout rounds, and the eight best third-placed teams joining them to make up a last 32.That expansion is likely to reduce the sense of jeopardy in the first round, a problem seen in other major championships which have increased in size in recent years. Scheffler outduels Rahm at PGA to capture third major title

CHARLOTTE - World number one Scottie Scheffler captured his third major title on Sunday, outdueling Spain's Jon Rahm down the back nine in the final round to win the PGA Championship by five strokes.

Scheffler, the 2022 and 2024 Masters champion, became the 10th consecutive American to win the event, firing a level-par 71 at Quail Hollow to finish on 11-under 273 and defeat countrymen Harris English, Davis Riley and Bryson DeChambeau, tied for second on six-under.

"I knew it was going to be a challenging day. Finishing off a major championship is always difficult," Scheffler said.

"I did a good job of staying patient on the front nine. I didn't have my best stuff, but I kept myself in it, and I stepped up on the back nine."

Rahm stumbled to a 73 to finish on 280 and share eighth after a bogey at 16 and double bogeys at 17 and 18.

"Pretty fresh wound right now, but there have been a lot of good things happening this week and a lot of positive feelings to take for the rest of the year."

Scheffler took home a $3.42-million top prize from a record $19-million purse.

Scheffler squandered a five-stroke edge, Rahm briefly tying him for the lead, but a birdie at the par-five 10th lifted Scheffler back in front to stay.

The 28-year-old Texan took control with birdies at 14 and 15 while Rahm's closing woes secured Scheffler the Wanamaker Trophy, his first major win outside of Augusta National.

"I'm proud of how I did this week just staying in it mentally and hitting the shots when I needed to," Scheffler said.

"This back nine will be one that I remember for a long time. It was a grind out there. I think at one point on the front I maybe had a four- or five-shot lead, and making the turn, I was tied for the lead.

"To step up when I needed to the most, I'll remember that for a while."

After suffering a right-hand injury last December, Scheffler only won his first title of the year two weeks ago at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson.

The major victory was Scheffler's 15th career PGA Tour triumph, all in a span of three years and 94 days, with Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods the only players to hit the mark faster.

Scheffler, whose nine titles in 2024 included Paris Olympic gold, converted his eighth consecutive 54-hole lead into a victory.

He also matched Spanish legend Seve Ballesteros as the only players in the past century to win their first three majors by at least three shots.

- 'Kept hitting it left' -

Scheffler began the day with a three-stroke lead and stretched the margin as high as five, but Scheffler struggled with tee shots fading left as Rahm made his charge.

"I just kept hitting it left," Scheffler said.

Scheffler answered a bogey at the first with a birdie at the second but bogeys at six and nine were costly while Rahm birdied the eighth, 10th and 11th to share of the lead at nine-under.

Scheffler reclaimed the lead with a nine-foot birdie putt at the 10th while Rahm missed birdie putts at 12 and 14 and an eagle chance at the par-five 15th that ended with par.

Scheffler found a greenside bunker at 14 but blasted out to seven feet and made the birdie putt, then birdied 15 as Rahm was making bogey at 16, sealing his fate.

"I hit the important shots well this week," Scheffler said. "And that's why I'm walking away with the trophy."

Rahm, the 2021 US Open and 2023 Masters champion, captured the 2024 season crown in the LIV Golf League, but has not won a title this season in the Saudi-backed series.

Majors remain the only place where top PGA Tour and LIV stars compete.

Third-ranked Xander Schauffele closed with a 22-foot birdie putt to shoot 68 and finish on 283.

Five-time major winner Rory McIlroy, who completed a career Grand Slam by winning last month's Masters, fired a closing 72 to finish on 287.

World number two McIlroy skipped media interviews after all four rounds at a layout where he has won four times and owns the course record of 61.

Real Madrid sign Bournemouth's Huijsen for £50 million

Real Madrid signed Spain defender Dean Huijsen from Bournemouth on Saturday after agreeing to pay his £50 million ($59 million) release fee.

The 20-year-old centre-back has impressed in his one season in the Premier League after joining the Cherries from Juventus in 2024 for £12.8 million.

"Real Madrid and Bournemouth have reached a deal for the transfer of player Dean Huijsen, who will be at our club for the next five seasons, from June 1 2025 until June 30, 2030," said Los Blancos in a statement.

Bournemouth confirmed Madrid had "activated a £50 million release clause", with reports suggesting Huijsen's former sides Juventus and Malaga will also benefit from the deal.

Madrid moved quickly to sign the defender amid interest from several Premier League clubs for the Spain international.

Huijsen will be available for Real Madrid at the Club World Cup in the United States this summer, with their first game against Al-Hilal on June 18 in Miami.

The defender, born in the Netherlands, moved with his family to Spain aged five and played in Malaga's youth academy.

Huijsen made his Spain debut against the country of his birth, helping La Roja defeat the Dutch in March to reach the Nations League final four.

Real Madrid have struggled defensively this season, losing 14 games across all competitions and finishing without a major trophy.

Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti is departing to take over the Brazil national team and Bayer Leverkusen's Xabi Alonso is expected to replace him in a summer of change in the Spanish capital.

Huijsen is set to be joined at the Santiago Bernabeu this summer by England defender Trent Alexander-Arnold at the end of his Liverpool deal.

Ancelotti said Huijsen was a good signing for Madrid.

"He's a great player, young, he has a lot of potential, it's a very good signing by Real Madrid," Ancelotti told a news conference, ahead of the visit to face Sevilla on Sunday in La Liga.

"Every player that Real Madrid signs excites me, because Real Madrid always want to be at the top, and they will always be at the top."

Madrid have suffered various injury problems this season, particularly in defence."It was not thinkable (this would happen) last summer, because we had David Alaba back, (Eder) Militao was fit, (Dani) Carvajal was fit, but injuries have hurt us," added Ancelotti. Ferocity, fitness and fast bowling: how Virat Kohli revolutionised Indian cricket

Kohli’s collision with Sam Konstas during the Boxing Day Test versus Australia.

Vaughan Cruickshank, University of Tasmania and Brendon Hyndman, Charles Sturt University

Virat Kohli announced his retirement from Test cricket on Monday.

While his Instagram message just said this was the “right time”, his poor recent Test form, mental fatigue and desire to spend more time with his family, charity foundation and expanding business empire have been suggested as other influential factors.

During his 14-year Test career “King Kohli” has been the backbone of the Indian batting line-up, and his absence is a huge blow as the Indians prepare to tour England next month.

The megastar scored 9,230 runs in 123 Tests at an average of 46.85, including 30 centuries.

These numbers put him in the top five Indian test batsmen of all time, but his legacy extends far beyond his batting achievements.

Kohli, 36, quit Twenty20 Internationals last year (after India won its second world title). He may continue to play one-day internationals.

Rising to the top of Test cricket

Kohli has been the greatest Indian batsman of his generation.

He made his Test debut in 2011 against the West Indies and played his final match against Australia in January.

He scored centuries against every country he played against, with more than half of these coming overseas.

His seven Test centuries in Australia is the second most by an overseas batsman.

He was at his peak between 2014 and 2019, when he averaged more than 60 in Test cricket and became one of the “fab four” (the world’s best Test batsmen) alongside Steve Smith, Kane Williamson and Joe Root.

This period also included six double-hundreds in 18 months, and 13 months as the number one ranked Test batsman in the world.

Kohli the leader

Kohli is India’s greatest ever Test captain.

His tenure from 2014 to 2022 was a golden age for Indian Test cricket.

India won 40 of 68 Tests (59%) in this period and did not lose a Test series at home. India was the number one ranked Test team in the world from 2016–20 and won its first Test series in Australia in 2018–19.

These statistics make Kohli one of the most successful Test captains of all time.

Beyond these numbers, he was a charismatic and aggressive captain who redefined India’s approach to Test cricket by bringing a more competitive edge to the team.

He drove higher expectations around fitness, training intensity and fast bowling that continue to shape Indian cricket.

Mandatory fitness testing and improved dieting and recovery practices, which redefined the team’s standards, are attributed to Kohli’s leadership.

Similarly, Indian success was strongly contributed to by Kohli encouraging the development of a world-class pace bowling attack, which marked a significant shift from the spin-heavy approach of Indian cricket.

Controversies

While Kohli’s energy, passion and intensity contributed to his success as batsman and captain, they also led to numerous confrontations with opposition players, which some believed to be disrespectful and arrogant.

His intense celebrations and assertive body language also drew criticism from conservative cricketing audiences.

Many of these controversies have occurred in Australia, where Kohli enjoyed a love-hate relationship with Australian players and crowds.

Examples include flipping the bird to the crowd, making sandpaper gestures (in reference to the 2018 Australian ball tampering scandal, also known as Sandpapergate) and shoulder-barging young Australian batsman Sam Konstas.

What will his Test legacy be?

For more than a decade, Kohli has been the heartbeat of the Indian Test team, and his retirement marks the end of an era.

He reshaped the mindset of Indian cricket and cultivated a faster, fitter, fiercer, more successful team.

Kohli was also one of the greatest ambassadors of Test cricket, and has played a significant role in ensuring the game remains relevant in an era increasingly dominated by T20 cricket.

He made Test cricket aspirational again because he wanted it to thrive. He knew India needed to dominate the hardest format to be respected.

His social media reach (272 million followers on Instagram and 67.8 million on X) is more than Tiger Woods, LeBron James and Tom Brady combined, and was even referred to by LA2028 Olympics organisers when they announced cricket’s entry into the games.

In recent days, Kohli has been described as “a modern-day giant”, a “provocateur in chief”, and “his generation’s most profound figure”.

Love him or hate him, he elevated the spectacle of Test cricket. His electric energy brought the best out of India and its opponents and made him impossible to ignore when batting or fielding.

Elite women's sport revenue to top $2 billion: Deloitte

Global revenues for women's elite sport are on track to top $2 billion in 2025, with commercial appeal at an all-time high, according to financial experts Deloitte.

The company said Tuesday that the combination of matchday, commercial and broadcast income would push revenues to $2.35 billion (2.15 billion euros) worldwide, up from $1.88 billion in 2024.

That would represent a 240 percent rise in four years. Deloitte valued the 2022 market at $692 million.

Jennifer Haskel of the Deloitte Sports Business Group said: "The commercial appeal of women's sports and its athletes has never been higher, as the sector continues to shine on the global stage."

She added: "The growth of women's sport has continued to exceed expectations as various competitions, leagues, clubs and athletes generate significant returns despite limited resources.

"Crucially, the industry is moving beyond short-sighted metrics to focus on evolving structures and legacy programmes through enhanced investment and bold action."

The two highest revenue-generating sports are basketball and football.

Deloitte said the 2025 Women's Rugby World Cup, being held in England, had already sold a record number of tickets and the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup in Brazil would aim to tap into an emerging market.

"Major events are increasing visibility and participation but deliberate action needs to be taken after these big moments to drive domestic success for leagues and clubs," said Haskell."It is no longer enough to just host an event organisers must be bold and think of new ways to engage fans and drive participation even after the champion is crowned." World no.1 Sinner accepts three-month tennis ban to resolve doping charge

LAUSANNE - Jannik Sinner's long doping saga came to an end on Saturday after he agreed to a three-month ban from tennis, the world number one admitting "partial responsibility" for team mistakes which led to him twice testing positive for traces of clostebol in March last year.

The 9 February to 4 May suspension means Sinner will be free to play in the French Open, the second Grand Slam of the season, which begins on 25 May at Roland Garros.

In a statement, Sinner said that the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) accepted that he "had no intent and did not derive any competitive advantage from the two positive tests" of the banned substance.

Australian Open champion Sinner has always said that clostebol entered his system when his physiotherapist used a spray containing it to treat a cut before providing a massage and sports therapy.

"This case had been hanging over me now for nearly a year and the process still had a long time to run with a decision maybe only at the end of the year," Sinner said.

"I have always accepted that I am responsible for my team and realise WADA's strict rules are an important protection for the sport I love. On that basis I have accepted WADA's offer to resolve these proceedings on the basis of a three-month sanction."

WADA said separately that "Sinner did not intend to cheat" but that he would serve his suspension as he is responsible for the actions of his entourage.

Sport's global doping watchdog confirmed it was withdrawing its appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), which was due to hear the case in April.

The agreement between Sinner and WADA also means that Sinner will be able to play in front of his home fans at the Rome Open which kicks off just after the end of his suspension and is the last big clay-court tournament before Roland Garros.

Saturday's announcement brings to an end a controversy which has followed Sinner everywhere just as he rose to become the top player in men's tennis and a multiple Grand Slam winner.

- Doping controversy -

Sinner was facing a potential ban of two years after WADA appealed to CAS against his initial exoneration by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA), announced in August.

The positive tests were not intially made public while the ITIA investigation was ongoing and Sinner had been allowed to carry on playing after successfully appealing provisional suspensions.

"We were satisfied that the player had established the source of the prohibited substance and that the breach was unintentional. Today's outcome supports this finding," said the ITIA on Saturday.

The ITIA's initial ruling caused uproar among a section of the men's tour, with outspoken Australian player Nick Kyrgios calling it "ridiculous" and pouring scorn on Sinner's explanation for the contamination.

Kyrgios reacted to Saturday's announcement on X, posting: "Guilty or not? Sad day for tennis. Fairness in tennis does not exist."

And three-time Grand Slam winner Stan Wawrinka was equally damning of the deal, writing: "I don't believe in a clean sport anymore."

The ITIA's decision was made public just days before last year's US Open, which Sinner subsequently won to claim his second Grand Slam after breaking his major tournament duck at the previous Australian Open.

Sinner then successfully defended his title at Melbourne Park last month, becoming just the fourth man to do so since the turn of the century alongside tennis icons Andre Agassi, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic.

By that point he had confirmed his status as national hero in Italy by winning the ATP Finals in Turin and then starring in his country's second straight Davis Cup triumph.

Sinner, who pulled out of defending his title at this month's Rotterdam Open, had previously been viewed with some suspicion in the Mediterranean nation.

His origins in the German-speaking areas of South Tyrol and residence in Monaco led to local media and former tennis players casting doubt on whether he was Italian at all.

But he is now Italy's biggest sports star after surging to the top of the sport ahead of Spain's golden boy Carlos Alcaraz, himself a four-time Grand Slam champion at the age of 21.By Terence Daley World no.1 Sinner accepts three-month tennis ban to resolve doping charge

Sinner doping hearing at sports court fixed for April: CAS

LAUSANNE - World number one Jannik Sinner will have his hearing into allegations of doping at the Court of Arbitration for Sport on 16-17 April, the Lausanne-based body said on Friday.

The World Anti-Doping Agency appealed after the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) cleared Sinner after he tested positive twice for the banned steroid clostebol in March last year.

"No parties requested a public hearing and it will be conducted behind closed doors," CAS said in a statement.

The ITIA accepted defending Australian Open champion Sinner's explanation that the drug entered his system when his physio used a spray containing it to treat a cut, then provided massage and sports therapy to the player.

Asked on the eve of the Australian Open if he knew when a verdict was due, the 23-year-old said: "I know exactly as much as you guys know.

"We are in a stage where we don't know many, many things."

Sinner, who faces a stern first-round test at Melbourne Park against big-hitting Chilean Nicolas Jarry, admitted the scandal continued to play on his mind.

"You think about this, of course," he said. "I would lie if I would tell you I forget.

"It's something what I have with me now already for quite a long time. But it is what it is. I'm here trying to prepare the Grand Slam. Let's see how it goes."

Sinner said he had always been "very, very careful on every single medicine I take, even what I eat".

"When the bottle is open, I throw it away, I take a new one," he said.

"In my mind I know exactly what happened, and that's how I block it (out).

"I haven't done anything wrong, that's why I'm still here. That's why I'm still playing."

ATP chairman Andrea Gaudenzi has insisted Sinner's case was "run by the book".

"I genuinely believe there has been a lot of misinformation out there, which is unfortunate," Gaudenzi told the Australian Associated Press in a recent interview.

"I am 100 percent sure that there has not been any preferential treatment. The process has been run by the book and according to the rules, by the ITIA."

Former world number one Novak Djokovic said he believed Sinner when he said he tested positive due to contamination, but the 24-time Grand Slam winner asserted that players had been "kept in the dark" throughout the process.

"I've been really frustrated, as have most of the other players, that we've been kept in the dark for five months," Djokovic said.

"He (Sinner) received the news (of the positive tests) in April and the announcement was not until August, just before the US Open."The ATP has not really talked in depth about why they kept that case away from the public." Sinner doping hearing at sports court fixed for April: CAS
