PETA faces flak for signing Sunny Leone

Hindustan Times, By Vaishali Bhambri,New Delhi, Some swear to save animals, others advocate turning vegetarian, but most of them have one thing in common — they are flesh-flashing starlets in the news for the wrong reasons. After getting on board a bevy of B-grade actors to do their campaigns in skimpy clothes and suggestive poses, animal  welfare organisation, People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is now under fire for appointing adult film star Sunny Leone as one of its ambassadors. While the actual campaign with Leone is yet to be launched, the idea of her posing for the cause has already invited the wrath of ‘pure vegetarian’ Indians. “Most of the celebs who join PETA are in for fame and not for saving animals ... too much glamour and exposure,” read a post by Veeral Shah on the official Facebook page of PETA. Sunny leone poses for PETA “Why pick out porn stars when you can do with inspiring people?,” wrote Gaurav Bafna. “I wouldn’t have guessed her to be a vegetarian ... is she?” says Rashi Tri. Other faces for PETA India include controversy queens Rakhi Sawant, Sherlyn Chopra, Veena Malik, sisters Gauhar-Nigaar Khan and most recently, Pooja Misrra of Bigg Boss fame. Misrra, in what has been slammed by many as an ‘absurd and suggestive’ ad, dresses like a bird in pink feathers and holds a placard that reads, ‘Think Birds Belong in Cages? Spare Me’. “Ohhh now again she is saying spare me, please spare us,” wrote Shaun Sen when we saught reactions on the HT City Facebook page. However, Poorvi Joshipura, chief functionary, PETA India, says, “Anyone who spends their time helping animals deserves to be commended. The nation is full of fans of Bigg Boss, and many celebs who have appeared on the show are animal lovers. And let’s face it, when celebrities speak, people listen. All of our celebrity supporters are volunteers with big hearts who take time out of their busy schedules to help animals. Sunny Leone and her hubby Daniel have two rescued dogs at home. Pooja Misrra wore a PETA T-shirt during her time on Bigg Boss to encourage people to be kind to animals.” Source: Hindustan Times
