By Marina Volkova, Facebook knows and remembers all about its users - even the information that they have personally removed from their page, or protected from outside viewing. A Student of the Law department of the Vienna University, Max Shrems according to the EU legislation sent several formal requests to the company asking to provide the information it holds about him. In response, he received by mail his whole life for the last three years on 1200 pages stored on a disk. But the question is: can anybody else get access to this information? The information was divided into 57 categories, including his religious and political views, all the messages ever sent or received by the user - in general, the file contained everything, even including the information that had been removed and unavailable to the user himself. One would think, this is an occasion for joy – you can suddenly find a photo that was deleted in error or a lost phone number. But, this omniscience has a reverse side. First of all, there are things that we want to forget, for instance, simply because they were wrong. Secondly, this kind of information can be disclosed of law enforcement agencies upon their request. And how can you be sure that nobody cold to convince the social network admins to share personal information, for example, by illegal or fraudulent means?
