Twitter’s management says it deleted the account because Adams had breached the service’s rules but the journalist and his supporters are convinced that the main reason for that was his criticism of the NBC channel. The incident shows an alarming trend on the Internet when corporations and governments are winning influence over social networks, which until
recently have been regarded as free speech strongholds. Twitter’s spokeswoman Rachael Horwitz says the decision was taken after the NBC complained that Adams had tweeted an email address of Gary Zenkel, president of NBC Olympics, the corporation’s unit, which is in charge of the broadcast of the Olympics in London. But Adams says that the NBC was discontent over his criticism of the channel’s activities. In particular, Adams accused the NBC of delays in broadcasting the ceremony of the Olympics’ opening on the East coast of the US by 6 hours. He said the NBC had done it on purpose to profit more from advertising in prime-time. Adams also stressed that he had not breached Twitters’ rules because he published Zenkel’s corporate email address, not a personal one.
