By Lee Kyung-Ho (info@koreatimes.com): HP regained the No. 1 spot in the global laptop computer market ahead of its split into two units—HP (printer and PC business) and HP Enterprise (corporate hardware and service business) scheduled on November 1 this year. According to IT market research firm TrendForce on August 3, HP grabbed a share of 21 percent in the global laptop market in the second quarter of this year, overtaking Lenovo as the world’s largest notebook computer maker. Despite the decline in overall personal computer demand worldwide, HP increased its sales volume by 10 percentage points in the second quarter. HP ranked No. 2 in the first quarter of this year with a share of 19.3 percent, falling behind Lenovo’s 20.4 percent. Lenovo suffered a 2.7-percent decline in sales in the second quarter compared to a quarter ago, slipping to the No. 2 position. Following them were Dell with 13.4 percent, Apple with 10.9 percent, Asus, Acer, and Toshiba. Samsung Electronics ranked No. 8 with a share of 1.9 percent in the second quarter, the same with the figure marked a quarter ago. Its sales volume, however, fell 40.4 percent quarter on quarter.
