India to export tobacco to China, world's largest tobacco consumer: Commerce Min Goyal
The ID Staff: New Delhi: The Union Minister of Commerce & Industry, Piyush Goyal, said today that a phyto-sanitary protocol has been signed between the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, Government of India and the General Administration Customs of the Peoples Republic of China (GACC) on 21 January 2019 in Beijing. It is expected that the signing of the protocol will push overall export of FCV (Flue-Cured Virginia) tobacco, primarily produced in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, to China. China being the world’s largest consumer of tobacco, revival of exports to China will greatly help tobacco farmers in Andhra Pradesh since this could lead to a spurt in demand and hence better price realization to the farmers due to competitive pricing. India does not have any protocol agreements with any other country to export tobacco. This information was given by the Minister of Commerce & Industry, Piyush Goyal, in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha today. In November, India’s first Cooperative for nicotine industry & tobacco farmers was formed in Gujarat. The Sardar Patel AgroTech Coop Society for nicotine extraction will help 5 lakh Tobacco farmers in Gujarat, aligned with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of doubling farmer incomes by 2022.
