Malaysia seeks to resume travel economy


To revive Malaysia’s tourism sector from the severe blow of coronavirus pandemic, the country’s tourism ministry has applauded the government’s decision to resume travel on ‘green zones’ for foreigners.

Tan Kok Liang, president of the Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA), told Arab News that they have always been asking the government to review international borders. “The green zones are most welcome,” he said.

“Despite several efforts taken by MATTA, resuming on the domestic route is not enough to regenerate sustainable revenues streams for the nation,” he also said.

It is noted that ‘Green zones’ are routes that have been identified as safe for travel, but with strict testing and monitoring during a visit. The proposal to launch the green zones with Australia, Brunei, China, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam. 

Some countries require a travel guide for visitors as well as mandatory testing before departure and upon arrival. Visitors need not undergo a must 14-day quarantine.
