New Zealand delays election over coronavirus fears

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern on Monday announced the country’s general election would be postponed by a month due to a new outbreak of coronavirus.

According to the BBC, the country was scheduled to hold elections on September 19. But considering the current coronavirus situation, the election will now be held on October 17.

However, Jacinda Ardern said she had absolutely no intention to allow any further delays to the vote. “I have no intention to postpone the election. But considering the corona situation, we have to take such a decision. We have no intention of allowing any further delays,” she added.

According to the New Zealand law, the prime minister can postpone elections for two months if necessary. Moreover, opposition parties have been urging the government to postpone the polls as well.

The lockdown in Auckland has been extended by 12 days due to an outbreak of the coronavirus earlier this week. Level 3 alert has been issued in Auckland since last Wednesday. Other cities in New Zealand have levels 2 alert. It has already been hinted that this caution will be extended. The country has taken 4 step cautions to prevent coronavirus.

Earlier, New Zealand successfully completed a 102-day without any coronavirus infection.

According to the worldometer, 1,631 people have been infected with the coronavirus in New Zealand so far and 22 people have died. Source: https://www.daily-bangladesh.com
