Former Indian minister Jaswant Singh dies


Former Indian minister and BJP leader Jaswant Singh has died at the age of 82. The former army officer died today at 6:55 am (local time) of a cardiac arrest at Delhi's Army Hospital, the hospital said in a statement.

Since last June, Jaswant Singh has been undergoing treatment for 'Multiorgan Dysfunction Syndrome' and a serious brain injury.

Jaswant was born on 3 January 1938 in the village of Jasol under the Baram district of Rajasthan. After graduating from Mayo College and the National Defense Academy, he joined the Indian Army in the sixties.

He later resigned as an officer in the Indian Army to pursue a career in politics. He is one of the founders of BJP. He first joined in the Rajya Sabha in the eighties.

Expressing grief over his death, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, "Jaswant Singh Ji served our nation diligently, first as a soldier and later during his long association with politics. During Atal Ji’s Government, he handled crucial portfolios and left a strong mark in the worlds of finance, defence and external affairs. Saddened by his demise."
