New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has admitted she has used cannabis.
She made the remarks at a debate in New Zealand’s national election on Wednesday, according to The Independent, a UK-based news outlet.
New Zealand will hold national elections on October 17. The country will also hold a referendum on the “legalization of cannabis” on the same day.
Before the vote, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern attended a half-hour debate with National Party leader Judith Collins.
In the debate, the Labour Party leader Jacinda said, “Yes, I used cannabis a long time ago.”
On the legality of cannabis, Jacinda said, “I want the people of New Zealand to decide. I don’t want to do politics with it.”
Jacinda’s rival, New Zealand National Party leader Judith Collins, said that she had never used cannabis. She would vote against the legality of cannabis in the referendum, she also said.
