Trump’s recount in Georgia increased but affirms Biden win

Georgia, a major state of United States, has disappointed incumbent president Donal Trump, who was looking forward to winning after the election result recount in the state. The unexpected turnout at the Republican stronghold proved that there was no mistake in the vote count.

According to CNN, citing the Georgia Secretary of State’s office, the recount has increased by nearly 1,500 votes in favor of Republican candidate Donald Trump. However, local authorities said there were no reports of widespread fraud or vote-rigging in the state’s election.

Biden received 16 votes from the Electoral College. If these 16 votes were captured by Trump, the Trump camp, which did not concede defeat, could be revived.

Georgia authorities decided to recount the vote because of Trump - who was ahead in the preliminary results but lost in the end by a small margin of votes.

With this, Biden again reaffirmed his 306 electoral votes as the results were not changed much.

To run the White House, a presidential candidate has to get 270 electoral college votes - where the Democrat candidate received 36 more electoral votes than required.

Democratic candidate Bill Clinton won Georgia 24 years ago in the 1996 presidential election. Since then, no other Democrat candidate has won in that state. This time, after winning Georgia, Biden re-established the team in the state.

Biden’s rival, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, received 232 electoral college votes.

On not conceding Trump’s defeat, Biden said Thursday that the president was sending an “incredibly damaging message” to the world about how democracy works. “He will be remembered as the most irresponsible president in the history of the United States,” he said.

Four days after the 3 November presidential election, Biden secured the required 270 electoral college votes by winning the state of Pennsylvania. On the same day, the US media declared him the winner.

However, Trump has not yet bowed to Biden. He has filed lawsuits in several states alleging vote-rigging.

Earlier, Biden won by a margin of 14,101 votes out of Georgia’s nearly 5 million votes. But on 11 November, State Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger told in a press conference that a recount was needed as the victory margin was too small. “The recount would be in full swing,” he said at that time.“The recount across Georgia has once again proved that the new and safer ballot voting system was correct,” Raffensperger said on Thursday, adding that all the credits go to the local election officials. They have counted so many ballots and given results in a very short time, he added. Source: https://www.daily-bangladesh.com
