The ruling Socialist Party, led by Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, has won a landslide victory in the country’s parliamentary elections. His party bagged the victory amid a number of Western countries, including the United States, have put pressure to impose sanctions on the Maduro government.
With this victory, Maduro is expected to be able to consolidate his power in the country.
Meanwhile, US-backed opposition leader Juan Guaidó called on his coalition to boycott the election. Despite this, the Venezuelan people voted overwhelmingly in the election.
Indira Alfonzo, president of Venezuela’s National Electoral Council, said Maduro and his ruling Socialist Party had won 67.7 percent of the 80 percent of the vote counted so far.
