Nobel Literature Prize Goes to French Novelist Patrick Modiano

By Graham Beattie: French novelist Patrick Modiano has won the Nobel Prize in Literature "for the art of memory with which he has evoked the most ungraspable human destinies and uncovered the life-world of the Occupation," the Swedish Academy said. The prize is worth 8 million kronor (about $1.1 million). In its biography of the winner, who was born near Paris less than three months after the end of World War II in Europe, the Academy said that "Modiano's works centre on topics such as memory, oblivion, identity and guilt. The city of Paris is often present in the text and can almost be considered a creative participant in the works. Rather often his tales are built on an autobiographical foundation or on events that took place during the German Occupation. He sometimes draws material for his works from interviews, newspaper articles or [his] own notes, which he has accumulated over the years. His novels show an affinity with one another, and it happens that earlier episodes are extended or that persons recur in different tales." The New York Times said that "many of his fictional works delve into the moral dilemmas that citizens faced during World War II, and some play with the detective genre." Most of Modiano's titles translated into English are out of print, although that may change soon. Those works include 1978 Prix Goncourt-winner Missing Person (Rue des Boutiques Obscures), translated by Daniel Weissbort and published by Verba Mundi/David R. Godine; Suspended Sentences: Three Novellas, translated by Mark Polizzotti, to be published by Yale University Press in February; Out of the Dark (Du Plus Loin de l'Oubli), translated by Jordan Stump and published by University of Nebraska Press; Honeymoon (Voyage de noces), published by Verba Mundi/David R. Godine; and Dora Bruder, translated by Joanna Kilmartin and published by University of California Press. Modiano also has written children's books and film scripts, including the screenplay for Lacombe Lucien, the 1974 movie directed by Louis Malle and set during the Nazi Occupation of France. Jay Chou: Complete showman

The movies he merely stars in may not be the best of the bunch, but those he makes with full creative control never fail to turn heads. Music sensation Jay Chou morphs from a wonder boy with a Midas touch into a mature artist with more strengths than weaknesses. Few entertainers or artists get to dominate a whole decade. For those that do, Act Two of their career is decidedly mixed. Jay Chou has been a marginal player in Chinese-language cinema. Even though his 2007 debut in feature-film directing was a smash success, he was still seen as riding on the coattails of his all-engulfing music accomplishments as Secret is built around extended passages of music. The Rooftop, his follow-up that opened on July 11, is not meant to shake off his image as a music prodigy. Rather, it was conceived as a musical, with Chou composing more than two dozen tunes for it. But it is not a conventional musical. Even the pair of lovebirds do not get to warble a big duet. "I use the song-and-dance numbers as a kind of music accompaniment," reveals Chou in an exclusive interview with China Daily. "Ideally, a musical director should be able to translate the imagery in his head into music. But most would hire professional musicians for that. I happen to be trained in music and have an interest in movie directing, so the creation process is more direct for me and the two skills complement each other." Not only did Chou compose all the original music, but he also conceived the staging for many of the tunes. It is not surprising since Chou directed most of his own music videos and many of his songs portray exotic or historical scenes in movie-like vicissitudes. Some of the numbers in The Rooftop turn out to have a Broadway quality, this for someone whose exposure to the genre is limited to Moulin Rouge, Mama Mia! and a few others. "I'm more into action movies, riding motorcycles, etcetera," he says. The result is only the love story gets the musical treatment while the gangster part is conspicuously devoid of singing or dancing. "I cannot imagine villains singing their lines. It would be weird, wouldn't it?" Chou follows the philosophy that there should not be singing and dancing for the sake of singing and dancing. His proudest number is a love ballad set against the screen of a shadow-puppet show. "I was sure others had used it before, but I wanted to use it to tell a story. There's no special effect here. All the animals and flowers and transformation were done with our hands and our bodies." The story for The Rooftop was set in the 1970s partly for the purpose of bridging a generation gap. Chou, never shy about admitting his closeness to his mother, a single parent who brought him up, wants his mother's generation to love this movie as much as he wants the younger generation to embrace it. It also gave him an opportunity to create a highly stylized world in which the rooftop represents a poor man's paradise. Although he, or rather the male lead he plays, ends up getting the girl, he designs a rival who is not only much more wealthy but possesses better looks. That person turns out to be the lesser of two villains but the immediate rival for his love interest. In Secret, this role is a competitor in a piano playoff. Chou says he identifies with the social underdog because he himself used to be a struggling artist, having to sleep in the recording studio when riding his motorbike home was too exhausting. "Even now, I don't have many friends from wealthy backgrounds," he says, explaining that his passion for vintage cars is more a matter of personal taste than one of money. Artistically, Chou has been praised for his taste. His music background has given him not just the ear but the eye for fluid storytelling. Although the story, which he wrote, is not strong or original and the different genre elements fail to merge seamlessly, his directing is assured with many strokes of genius. "Everyone who wants to be a director has a desire to act, but he may not be a good actor. I know what I want from an actor and have a way of getting the result, but left on my own I may not be able to act it out," he says. Coincidentally, the China Film Directors Association echoed his self-appraisal in a rare candid post on its micro blog account: "He may not be a good actor; but he is absolutely a good film director!" That means, we may expect greater things from the boy next door who can play a dozen musical instruments and ooze cool mumbling words unintelligible to most people. In a way, The Rooftop feels like a midway stop as he explores the uncharted waters of narrative art. It is a unique challenge in genre choice because the musical is extremely difficult to pull off and, without creating much of a hoopla, it has climbed over the 100-million-yuan ($16 million) mark in box-office returns in the Chinese mainland, a first for a musical film. This in a country where Les Miserables, for all its fantastic word-of-mouth, grossed no more than half that amount. "I'm glad that people mention Les Mis in the same sentence as The Rooftop. I hope my work can be a new signpost when people talk about Chinese-language musicals," Chou says. "But I have bigger ambitions."Source: Article

Titanic II blueprints unveiled

Australian billionaire Clive Palmer speaks at a news conference to announce plans for the building of his cruise ship Titanic II under the Blue Star Line in New York, Feb 26, 2013. According to Palmer, Titanic II, which will be a modern close replica of the original HMS Titanic which sank on her maiden voyage in the North Atlantic ocean on April 15, 1912, killing more than 1500 passengers and crew, will be privately funded and built at the CSC Jingling Shipyard in China, with her maiden voyage being from Southampton England to New York in late 2016. Australian mining entrepreneur Clive Palmer on Tuesday unveiled blueprints for Titanic II, a modern replica of the doomed ocean liner, although he stopped short of calling the vessel unsinkable. The ship will largely recreate the design and decor of the fabled original, with some modifications to keep it in line with current safety rules and shipbuilding practices, and the addition of some modern comforts such as air conditioning, Palmer said at a press conference in New York. The three passenger classes, however, will be prevented
from mingling, as in 1912, Palmer said. "I'm not too superstitious," Palmer said when asked whether recreating a ship best known for sinking was tempting fate. White Star Line, the operator of the original ship, had said the Titanic was designed to be unsinkable. Some 1,500 people died on Titanic's maiden voyage in 1912 from Southampton to New York after the ship collided with an iceberg in the North Atlantic. Palmer, who created the company Blue Star Line last year, declined to make a similar boast. "Anything will sink if you put a hole in it," Palmer said. "I think it would be very cavalier to say it." Unlike the original,

Titanic II will have more than enough space in its lifeboats for every person on board and will have additional escape staircases. Markku Kanerva, sales director at Deltamarin, the Finnish company designing the ship, said it would be the "safest cruise ship in the world." Palmer declined to answer questions about the project's cost. Although the Titanic was the world's largest ship in her time, she would be smaller than many of today's modern cruise ships. "It's not about the money," Palmer said. "I've got enough money for it, I think that's all that matters." Forbes estimated Palmer's net worth to be $795 million in 2012. He describes himself as a billionaire. Titanic II will be built by Chinese state-owned CSC Jinling Shipyard, which is already building four ore carriers for Palmer's mining business, he said. The contract to build Titanic II has not yet been signed, Palmer said. "Oh, probably next week, something like that," Palmer said, when asked when that would happen. "Most things I say I'll do I do. He hoped construction would

begin later this year, and that the maiden voyage, recreating the trans-Atlantic crossing of the original, would take place in 2016, he said. "But if it takes longer, it takes longer," he said. "But we'll do it. We've got a big pile of money." Jaime Katz, an analyst who tracks the cruise industry, said Titanic II may find it difficult to compete with established cruise lines, particularly the economies of scale of their larger fleets. She said the Titanic II could be marketed to wealthier passengers and could draw repeat business by varying its routes rather than focusing on trans-Atlantic crossings. "People are going to be really

cautious or superstitious regarding getting on a second version of the Titanic, or it could be a really compelling idea for history buffs who really want to live the story or the legend behind it," Katz said. "There's an audience for all sorts of cruises," she said. Titanic II will operate as a cruise ship, and passengers will find 1912-style clothing in their rooms should they wish to dress up and pretend they are living in an earlier era as they visit facsimiles of the original gilded first-class dining and smoking rooms, if they have the appropriate ticket. Although the classes will be kept largely separate, Palmer said he was

considering offering ticket packages that would allow passengers to experience all three classes during a typical six-day Atlantic crossing. Prices for the tickets will be announced later. Helen Benziger, a descendant of Titanic survivor Margaret Brown, better known as the Unsinkable Molly Brown, said at the press conference that the ship would be a chance to experience the sort of grace and civility she said was sometimes lacking in the modern world. "I think it's a chance to go back in time," said Benziger, who has joined the project's advisory board. Palmer said he plans to travel in third class on Titanic II's maiden voyage. "I'll be looking forward to it as you bang the drum and play the fiddle, twirling around like Leonardo does," he said, meaning actor Leonardo DiCaprio, in one of the repeated references he made to the 1997 James Cameron film 'Titanic.' Banned portrait of Queen on display

An unflattering portrait of the young Queen Elizabeth II has been displayed in public in Liverpool. For 60 years, the painting was under an unofficial ban because of its dissimilarity to the queen. Currently it can be seen in the historical St George's Hall, which houses the city concert hall and court. The Queen was portrayed with an unusually long neck, which makes the image appear different from the real queen. The author of the Portrait of John Napper, who died in 2001, managed to paint another portrait of the Queen, with a neck of normal length. It still adorns the town hall Liverpool. 2014 Acura MDX Prototype gets Teased Before Detroit Motor Show Debut

What you see here is an official teaser rendering of the 2014 Acura MDX Prototype that will be unwrapped for the first time during the press days of the 2013 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS), held in Detroit in mid-January. As is usually the case, Acura has released very little information regarding the concept study, but if you insist, here's what Honda's luxury arm said: "Utilizing 'Aero Sculpture' design language affecting both form and function, the 2014 MDX Prototype will feature alluring proportions with smooth, arching body lines matched to an efficient architecture." Judging by how close most Acura and Honda studies of the sort are to the actual road-going models they preview, then the MDX Prototype should be a thinly disguised concept of the production model that will go on sale towards the end of next year. Now, if that's the case, then the sketch is, shall we say, slightly misleading (…) as recent scoop shots of camouflage prototypes show a much less aggressive design with a much higher roofline than on the concept. See how they compare below. Source:  Carscoop

Gerhard Richter painting sells for record £21m

An oil painting by the German artist Gerhard Richter has sold for £21m ($34m) - an auction record for a work by a living artist. Abstraktes Bild, painted in 1994 , which was owned by rock star Eric Clapton, has been described as a "masterpiece of calculated chaos". The artwork, expected to fetch £9-12m, was sold to an anonymous bidder at Sotheby's in London on Friday. A round of applause broke out as the painting went under the hammer. Gerhard Richter, 80, who lives in Cologne, is considered by some to be the world's greatest living painter. 'Unique opportunity' Sotheby's called Abstraktes Bild a "paradigm of Gerhard Richter's mature artistic and philosophical achievement". Before the sale, Alex Branczik, senior director of contemporary art at Sotheby's, said of the painting: "Abstraktes Bild is one of the great abstract masterpieces by Gerhard Richter. "Its appearance on the market presents collectors with the unique opportunity to acquire an outstanding work by one of the greatest living painters." A sister painting of the artwork is currently jointly owned by the Tate and the National Galleries of Scotland. Eric Clapton is a known art collector. Even before the sale, the Sunday Times Rich List estimated the Cream guitarist' s wealth at some £140m, making him the 17th-richest British musician. He has previously sold off part of his extensive guitar collection to raise money for his rehab clinic, which he founded in 1998 to help treat drug and alcohol addiction. Source: SAM Daily Times

70-foot painting for Amitabh Bachchan's 70th birthday

Even as actress Jaya Bachchan lines up a slew of events, gifts and surprises for hubby and mega star Amitabh Bachchan, who turns 70 Thursday, a young fan of Big B is working tirelessly 24x7 to gift him a "touching and a very big gift". Raj Kapoor Chitera, 26, is making a 70-foot oil painting which will show various milestones in Bachchan's personal and professional life. Chitera, a resident of Allahabad, has done such work in the past too. In his earlier works, he has tried to push the case for implementing the death sentence awarded to Ajmal Kasab, the lone surviving terrorist after the attack in Mumbai in November 2008 that left 164 people dead. He has also taken on the theme of pollution of the Ganga. In 2011, he drew a 1,500-foot long painting on Tendulkar to mark his 38th birthday. Chitera told IANS that he was a die-hard fan of Big B, and proud to belong to the city from where the Bachchans trace their roots. "Through
humble present, I this want to show Amitji how he still is a smashing hit with his fans, all of us Allahabad  residents," Chitera says proudly. Originally from Ambedkarnagar district of Uttar Pradesh, the painter now lives in Allahabad. Producing a large painting for a big occasion is something Chitera is passionate about. Chitera says his Big B work will be in oil paint and on a roll of veneer, so that he "can send it to Jalsa (Amitabh Bachchan's residence in Mumbai) later". "The painting will have shades of all sorts, you will see a picture of Amitji's bachpan (childhood), his marriage to Jaya Bhaduri and his subsequent successes at the box office," the artist says, adding that the painting too, like a film, would have a story line. The films depicted in the painting would include "Abhimaan", "Shakti", "Sholay", "Zanjeer", "Coolie" and "Baghban". Chitera has been a painter and sculptor in sand for the last ten years. On Oct 11, Amitabh Bachchan's 70th birthday, Chitera would also be simultaneously doing a sand art gift for Bachchan, which will be executed at the Sangam, the confluence of the rivers Ganga and Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati. While Amitabh Bachchan's birthdays have thus far been largely private affairs, this time, the family has decided to make it a mega event as he turns 70. Media reports suggest that Jaya Bachchan, along with Piyush Pandey, will organise a two-day art exhibition - B Seventy - set to open Oct 12 at the Nehru Centre Art Gallery in Mumbai. The exhibition is likely to host 70 Indian artists, including Manu Parekh, Paresh Maity, Anjolie Ela Menon, Akbar Padamsee, Badri Narayan, Satish Gujral, Gieve Patel, Jayasri Burman, Arzan Khambatta, Farhad Hussain, Satish Gupta, Sujata Bajaj and Praneet Soi, among others. The lone effort of this artist from Uttar Pradesh, however, will stand out. And not just for its size. Source: Hindustan Times

Taj Mahal replica to be built in Dubai

A $1bn (£621m) project to build a replica of the Taj Mahal has been unveiled in the Gulf emirate of Dubai. The Taj Arabia complex would be much bigger than the original monument to love and include a 300-room hotel, shops and commercial buildings, developer Arun Mehra said. It would be ready by 2014 and be known as the "New City of Love", he said. The complex will also house other structures such as the Eiffel Tower, Pyramids and the Great Wall of China. The Taj Mahal, which is situated in the northern Indian town of Agra, is a Unesco World Heritage site. It was completed more than 350 years ago by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan as a shrine for his wife Mumtaz and took more than 20 years to build. The white marble mausoleum, situated on the banks of the river Yamuna, is sometimes known as a teardrop on the cheek of time. The Taj Arabia complex will be built around the Taj Mahal which is a "symbol of love and will include various facilities to encapsulate the beauty of life, love and romance mixed with the long established Mughal architecture", Mr Mehra, who is the chairman of Link Global Group, told the Press Trust of India. The developers say they hope that the Taj Arabia will become a new wedding destination and attract couples to it. An earlier plan to build the complex was shelved when the company was hit by the global economic downturn. Source: SAM Daily Times

All-New Kia Carens / Rondo Minivan to Bow at the Paris Motor Show

With the promise to combine "sporty looks with spacious functionality and an emotional appeal", Kia will perform the world premiere of the all-new Carens MPV, a successor to the minivan sold as the Rondo in North America up until 2010, at the Paris Motor Show on September 27. The new generation of the Carens makes use of a modified version of the Cee'd's platform shared with the Hyundai i30 (called the Elantra GT in North America) and at least in Europe, it will likely be offered with 1.4-liter and 1.6-liter petrol and diesel engines. The sketches released by Kia suggest that the new Carens will draw heavily on the design of the latest generation Cee'd. The Korea company said that the minivan will sport a "fresh, sleek, cab-forward design, lower roofline, longer wheelbase, larger wheels (up to 18-inch) and chrome beltline accent." Back in May, a Kia official had said that the company would present "a five-seat and seven-seat compact minivan that will replace both the Carens and Carnival" at the Paris Motor Show. From what we understand, the car pictured here is the five-seat version of Kia's new minivan proposal. Whether Kia will offer the new Carens in other markets around the world including North America is something that remains to be seen. Source: Carscoop

'Plastic' diamond displayed on Queen's jubilee

Uttoxeter (Agencies): A huge model diamond made out of transparent plastic balls is to be unveiled on Saturday to "scientifically celebrate" the Queen's Diamond Jubilee in the Uttoxeter city. The statue which represents the stone's molecular structure is to go on show in Uttoxeter in Staffordshire. It has been built by Keele University, local schoolchildren and volunteers who stuck 35,990 balls together.Team leader Graeme Jones said it represented "scientific advances" made since the Queen's coronation in 1952. The sculpture is over 8ft (2.5m) high and 6ft (1.8m) wide and is an octahedral shape with a point at the top and bottom.Jones said as people walk around it, they can see a "kaleidoscopic effect." He said: "The advances that have occurred during the Queen's reign have been breathtaking, from DNA to the Big Bang, the mobile phone to the internet - life in 2012 is light years different from that of 1952."
