After Topshop in London and Mango in Barcelona, Paris hosted a slew of big names in ready-to-wear fashion showing their collections outside the mainstream Fashion Week calendar. Meanwhile, the shows are now available for viewing on the Internet. Deciphering a phenomenon that is disturbing and much talked about. In a grandiose show featuring live singers, Etam opened this Paris Fashion Week season in grand style with a sixth show broadcast live on the Net, presenting the Lingerie and Swimwear collections featuring Natalia Vodianova. But the Etam group was not the only one. Another apparel giant chose to show its collections in much the same way: the Swedish fast fashion retailer H&M. A premiere was held under a marquee built especially for the occasion in the gardens of the Musée Rodin. An enormous construction (1,500m2 with 18 rooms), the decorations were produced by Bureau Betak which is more used to working with Christian Dior, Viktor & Rolf and John Galliano. Meanwhile, on Tuesday 5 March, Zadig & Voltaire showed for the second time in the fashion calendar. Although the phenomenon began in Paris, it is also affecting other capitals where the trade names are showing in large numbers, such as London (Topshop) and Barcelona (Mango and Desigual). Stop imitation, give way to creation “Whilst the idea is predominantly to score a media coup, the message from these retail brands is loud and clear: they also wish to show that they are forces to be reckoned with in fashion and that they are not waiting for the major designers' fashion shows just so that they can copy them,” explains Pascal Monfort, consultant and founder of the Pascal Monfort consultancy dedicated to the fashion sector. Is fast fashion copying? Not any more, if you believe the shows that they presented for the 2013 Fall-Winter season. Fast fashion is perhaps a little slower as it normally works at a hectic pace to capture the trend of the moment. It is a quiet revolution, for which it should allow itself a pat on the back. “Although these shows took place outside the mainstream Fashion Week calendar, it does not stop them from mastering the codes and the process, like Etam or H&M. Even better, they prove that they have the same resources as the big luxury houses, if not greater, and do things on a large scale,” Pascal Monfort emphasizes. This is disturbing for the young designers and rising talents for whom it is essential to have a visible profile during fashion week. “It is difficult to persuade fashion buyers and professionals to come to see our collections in a calendar that has become fuller,” confirms Christine Phung in the Designers Apartment showroom organised by the Fédération Française de la Couture with the aid of DEFI. And these shows by the big names undisputedly blur the identity of the product world. “We are asked to be commercial although it is the spectacular that makes people talk about you.” “These shows don’t affect me because fashion must stay open minded,” confides fashion designer Naco. “On the other hand, why don’t these undisputed economic powers support us more by offering co-branding, for example? We are the first to be open to that.” Live behind the scenes Finally, what is better than a live show to give a popular brand more glamor? For two seasons now all Fashion Weeks have been open to this kind of broadcasting. Two sites, Nowfashion.com and Style.com, broadcast the shows live and in photographs. The model is seen from head to foot, as well as the details of the figures and behind the scenes. This is a principle that most brands have included in their budgets. “In only a few years, shows have gone from absolute confidentiality to absolute exposure and that is worrying,” confides Pascal Monfort. Topshop took the experience even further at its last show in February entitled “The Future of the Fashion Show”. In fact, in association with Google, the English fashion giant put on a show that was broadcast live from the basement of the Tate Modern (where the show took place) on the brand’s YouTube-page, and in addition, each model was equipped with a mini camera that followed her every step. “Previously, it was the big names that created the buzz and had the wildest parties,” Pascal Monfort continues. “Today, brands such as H&M have completely divested themselves of their complexes about all of that and now organise the most popular evenings”. So, fast fashion has the glamour, but there are also problems with reproduction for the big luxury names that now put on live shows six months before the collections come out in the stores. “We’re in a perverse system, but it’s not without interest,” Naco concludes. “From my perspective, as in a restaurant, I come to see the showing of a brand for its image, its sincerity. What’s the point of looking in the kitchen? If I see too much, I lose my appetite!” Céline Vautard, Foto's: Stéphane Fugier Source: Fashion United

Messi breaks world record as Barca beat Deportivo
Messi 'breaks record' by scoring in 17th consecutive La Liga game
Lionel Messi scored in his 17th successive La Liga game, breaking a world record which has stood since the 1930s, according to his club Barcelona. The 25-year-old came off the bench to register his 40th league goal of the season for Barca in the 88th minute of their 2-0 win over Deportivo La Coruna. The world player of the year chipped in for his 27th goal in 17 matches. Barca said Messi had beaten Pole Teodor Pewterek's 1937-38 record of scoring in 16 straight games for Ruch Chorzow. Magical Messi Messi's 40 goals in La Liga means he has scored more league goals than 16 of the 20 teams in the division "The Argentine player's tally represents a new record in the history of football, something no other player has achieved before," the Spanish club said on their website. There was no immediate confirmation of Barcelona's claim by world governing body Fifa. Messi has now scored 52 goals in all competitions this season, including five in the Champions League. In December, Messi broke another record - that of the most goals in a calendar year - when he surpassed Gerd Mueller's 1972 tally of 85. With Barca seeking to overturn a first-leg deficit when they face AC Milan in the last 16 of the Champions League on Tuesday, the Catalan giants started their match against Deportivo with several of their biggest stars, including Messi, on the bench. Barcelona never needed to be at their fluid best to see off Deportivo. Alexis Sanchez gave them the lead just before half-time before Messi, who came on in the 59th minute, sealed victory two minutes from time. Speaking about overturning the 2-0 first-leg deficit, Barcelona assistant coach Jordi Roura said: "Tuesday will be an entirely different story. "But there is no doubt that the best way to get ready for a match is having won the previous game." Barcelona's 12th win in 13 home league games extended their lead to 14 points over Atletico Madrid, who meet Real Sociedad on Sunday. "We have the league title in our hands and we are not going to let it slip away," Alexis said. Source: Liocris
Messi extends Barcelona deal till 2018
Lionel Messi has signed a new contract that will tie him to Barcelona until 2018, the club announced on Thursday. Barca had already signalled Messi's intent to sign a new deal, along with teammates Carles Puyol and Xavi Hernandez, back in December and the four-time World Player of the Year has now put pen to paper. "After Puyol and Xavi, this afternoon it has been Leo Messi's turn. The Argentinean star, accompanied by his father, has signed an extension to his contract with the club until June 30, 2018," said a statement on the club's website. "The contract was signed in the Barcelona offices with president Sandro Rosell, vice-president Josep Maria Bartomeu and sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta all present." The contract retains the same 250 million euros (335 million dollars) buy-out clause as his previous deal and Messi will reportedly earn a net salary of 11 million euros (14.75million dollars). It is the sixth time in eight seasons that the Argentine has negotiated a new deal with Barca with the Spanish league leaders understandably keen to tie their talismanic forward down to a long-term deal. Messi broke an all-time European record on his way to scoring 91 goals in 2012, surpassing the previous record of 85 scored by German Gerd Muller in 1972. Source: Hindustan Times
Lionel Messi wins record fourth Ballon d'Or
Zurich: Lionel Messi won the 2012 FIFA World Player of the Year award for a record fourth-successive time after a record-breaking haul of 91 goals over 12 months. Messi smashed Gerd Muller's 40-year-old record of 85 goals in a calendar year to beat his great rival Cristiano Ronaldo and Barcelona teammate Andres Iniesta to the accolade. "To tell the truth this is really unbelievable to get this award, to get a fourth award, and the fourth-consecutive award," the 25-year-old winger said Monday in his acceptance speech. "I would like to recognise my colleagues from Barcelona. Andres, it's a proud moment to be by your side this
year. I would like to thank my family, my friends, my wife and my son." The only players to have won the award three times in a row are the Argentinean star himself and UEFA president Michel Platini. Dutch legends Marco van Basten and Johan Cruyff have won the gong three times but not in succession. Ronaldo, the 2008 Ballon d'Or winner who was nominated for hitting 46 goals to propel Real Madrid to the Spanish title, finishes behind Messi for the second-straight year. Iniesta was shortlisted after his spectacular form helped Spain retain their European Championship title in the summer, and he was named player of the tournament. Iniesta was runner-up to Messi in 2010. Spain coach Vicente Del Bosque won the coach of the year award. Source: News-Bullet

'Magical' Messi 'not good enough' at home to bag 'best athlete of 2012' award!
(ANI): Soccer star Lionel Messi has been reportedly subbed for the 'best athlete of 2012' award in his home country Argentina. Instead, Argentine boxer Sergio Martinez was awarded the title of "Olimpia de Oro," an honor given to the South American country's top athlete in voting by the Circulo de Periodistas - or association of journalists. Martinez defeated Mexican boxer Julio Cesar Chavez Jr earlier this year in their WBC title fight, Sport24 reports. According to the report, Barcelona star Messi, who has had a record-breaking year with 90 goals, didn't even finish second in the voting. That went to Sebastian Crismanich, the taekwondo fighter who won Argentina's only gold medal in the London Olympics. Messi finished third. As a consolation prize, Messi was voted the best Argentine footballer playing outside Argentina, the report said. "It is an honour having won this prize contending with athletes like Sebastian Crismanich and Leo Messi," Martinez said at the award ceremony on Tuesday night. Messi won the "Olimpia de Oro" award in 2011, the report added. (ANI)' Source: News Track India

Lionel Messi breaks 300-goal barrier as Barcelona hit five
Lionel Messi smashed through the 300-goal mark with a brace as Barcelona crushed Rayo Vallecano 5-0 in Madrid to go three points clear at the top of La Liga. David Villa, Xavi Hernandez and Cesc Fabregas got the other goals yesterday to put the pressure back onto second-placed Atletico Madrid who entertain Osasuna on Sunday. Messi's goals were the 300th and 301st of his career, a total made up of 270 for Barca and 31 for Argentina in only 419 matches. They also took him to 13 in the league this season and 73 in all competitions in 2012. That's just two behind Pele's 75 for Santos and Brazil in 1959, and only 12 shy of Gerd Mueller's all-time best calendar year record of 85 goals for Bayern Munich and West Germany in 1972. Rayo started brightly and had claims for a penalty turned down on eight minutes when Fabregas appeared to hold back Leo Baptistao. Rayo were pressuring the Catalans and it took until the 19th minute for Barca to have their first shot when Messi drove wide. However, a minute later, Barcelona were ahead. The chance came from nothing when Fabregas picked up a loose ball and played in Villa with a probing pass that the Spanish national team's all-time top scorer finished first time with his right foot. Fabregas was the supplier again for Villa seven minutes later, but this time his shot was saved by Ruben Martinez in the Rayo goal. Two minutes later, Ruben advanced quickly to block a Fabregas effort after Messi had found the ex-Arsenal man in space. Messi went close with a curled free-kick and as a hard fought first-half drew to a close Andrija Delibasic forced Victor Valdes into a save at the other end. Within two minutes of the restart, Messi had doubled the lead. Pedro Rodriguez found Martin Montoya in an advanced wide position and the right-back pulled the ball back for the little Argentine who steered it first time into the top right corner of the net. Javi Fuego then hit a rasping left footed drive that Valdes pushed wide and Jordi Amat tried his luck from distance as the home side looked for a quick way back into the match. Valdes was earning his wages as he next got down well to stop another drive from Fuego. Barcelona were quick to sense the danger and began to close down the game with a more measured approach that restricted Rayo's attacking forays. Xavi and Fabregas then added two more in two minutes with 10 minutes remaining. With two minutes left, Messi raced onto a Fabregas pass to get his second and his side's fifth. Earlier in-form Malaga were held to a 0-0 draw at struggling Espanyol. The Andalusian side rested Joaquin Sanchez and Javier Saviola after wins over Valladolid and AC Milan in the last seven days, but in a game of very few chances they could not find a way past Espanyol who moved off the bottom of the table. The point means Malaga will remain in third position as Real Madrid, who play Mallorca on Sunday, are four points behind on 14 points. Betis move into fourth on 16 points after a 1-0 home win over Valencia thanks to an early Salva Sevilla goal. Despite a string of chances for Spain striker Roberto Soldado, the away side left empty handed and have only one point to show from five away trips this season. Deportivo La Coruna earned a much needed point with a 1-1 draw at Celta Vigo in the Galician derby to bring to an end a run of four defeats. Juan Dominguez equalised for Deportivo after Mario Bermejo had opened the scoring, both in the first period. Celta defender Gustavo Cabral was red-carded just after the interval. When in Rome
My character is of a hooker who makes prostitution seem like a desirable profession. She is very professional, she looks at this job with dignity, and she wants to be the best at it What character do you play in To Rome with Love? My character is of a hooker who makes prostitution seem like a desirable profession. She is very professional, she looks at this job with dignity, and she wants to be the best at it. She is convinced she is helping people, and is really necessary for society. How would you describe the film? To Rome with Love is described as “a story about a number of people in Italy, some American, some Italian, some residents, some visitors, and the romances and adventures and predicaments they get into. How was it working with Woody Allen again? How did he approach you with the film? It was easier this time because I knew Woody, so I wasn’t so nervous because of all the stories you hear about him. He is peculiar and unique and different, but it is really a blessing to spend time with him, He is one of the funniest people in the world. Everyday he does something that surprises you, and that you will remember forever. What do you have to say of him as a director? Allen’s known for only giving his actors the basic info on the story and then just letting them run with it. He gives all this freedom, which is very liberating. He lets actors add their own flavour to the character. As I said, he is peculiar; you just ask him something and expect some answers that you could never think of. Mostly he avoids talking to his actors on the sets. How would you compare this outing with your earlier Vicky Cristina Barcelona? Maria Elena is a mad character more often seen in easy dresses, bare foot and fringed huge bags, more of a bohemian style. She is a restless character and has to create some chaos wherever she is. Whereas Anna is a well dressed, tucked in from head to toe, who thinks she is helping the society through prostitution. Anna is street smart, whereas Maria was mad and innocent. How do you normally approach your characters? I read my character with a neutral mind and try to think and visualise how the character could be better portrayed. What are the kind of scripts that catch your attention almost immediately? Scripts that have some meat or a role that convinces me. Would you say Hollywood films are now gaining precedence over European cinema comprising, French, Spanish, Italian, among others? And if it is, is it co-opting the local stories? I guess both are going hand in hand. English speaking people have now gone beyond Hollywood and the French, Spanish, Italians are taking interest in Hollywood. Is it difficult traversing Europe and America juggling your professional assignments? No,I always did one thing at a time and now I have different priorities so now may be just one or two movies a year will reduce the amount of travelling. What’s coming up next? My upcoming films are The Counselor (2013), I’m So Excited (2013), Twice Born (2012) are going to be released. Have you worked in any of Hollywood’s magnificent animation films? What is your opinion of them? I have not yet worked in magnificent animation films but am looking forward to it, if I get an opportunity. Well, it’s really fun working in such projects, as maximum people like animated films especially children. It’s getting recognition because it’s entertainment for whole family so it’s really wonderful to be associated with it. Source: Screen India
