Water Management: When teacher is Aamir Khan whole equation of learning changes

Indian film celebrity Aamir Khan is shepherding a very revolutionary campaign – making Maharashtra drought-free in five years. The movie star started the initiative with hopes of galvanising the rural population to go back to fundamental lessons of water management taught by their ancestors
Historians will tell you that an explosion of creativity occurs the moment the world starts complaining that there is nothing left to invent, or that the search for solutions has come to an end.

This explosion is fate’s way of reminding us that there is always something just over the horizon of knowledge. Social entrepreneurs are now using their talent to bring lasting solutions to several entrenched social problems at a time when the world has never needed them more.

Indian film celebrity Aamir Khan is shepherding a very revolutionary campaign – making Maharashtra drought-free in five years. The movie star started the initiative with hopes of galvanising the rural population to go back to fundamental lessons of water management taught by their ancestors.

The government has been purveying the same lessons for long but with little success. When the teacher is Khan, the whole equation of learning and inspiration changes. Maharashtra’s villages are seeing water in their parched lands after consecutive dry years. Aamir’s social revolution is set to surpass the feats of legendary rural reformers like Anna Hazare in Ralegaon Siddhi and Popatrao Pawar in Hiware Village, both in Ahmednagar District

Satyamev Jayate, Khan’s TV show that started in 2012, focused on issues that required social change. The response to the show was phenomenal as people from various walks of showed keenness to make a difference. Aamir’s team believed that if they worked in a specific area on a specific issue, they could be part of a massive social transformation. They zeroed in on the issue of water scarcity and decided to work in Maharashtra, thereby starting their non-profit, Paani Foundation, which aimed to spread knowledge about water management and groundwater

Since early times people have been conserving water for offseason by harvesting, storing, and managing rainfall, runoff and stream flow. But modern policies have made them abandon their native wisdom and they are paying a heavy price as they struggle against crippling droughts.

Ancient Indians had mastery over the art of water governance. Kautilya’s Arthashastra, written around 300 BC, has details of how tanks and canals must be built and managed. The key was to clarify the enabling role of the state, the king, and the management role of local communities. The kings did not have armies of public works engineers; they provided incentives to communities who built water systems and managed them. The British changed all this by vesting the resource with the state and creating large bureaucracies for management. People no longer remained part of the system.

Khan has adopted a unique approach to getting the public interested in his work, with the help of the Satyameva Jayate Water Cup, which has infused a competitive spirit in the participants. The movement started in 2016 with 16 villages and has now spread to 4000 villages across 24 of state’s 36 districts.

The competition is put together by three non-profits—Paani Foundation, Watershed Organisation Trust and Sparsh-Centre for Participatory Learning. Villages are assessed on watershed management and water conservation works for the competition.

Prizes for the Cup include cash prizes of Rs 50 lakh, Rs 30 lakh and Rs 20 lakh for the top three villages. Dr Avinash Pol, known as the ‘paanyache (water) doctor’, is the inspiration for the foundation and has said that 80% of the villages that participated in the competition last year created enough capacity to “bid goodbye to the water tankers they had been dependent on for years.”

The Paani Foundation has worked out a very careful strategy to enthuse half-abandoned villages into battling drought. The secret is Aamir‘s unique charisma that serves as the glue to enthuse and bind the people.

Social mobilisation is the lynchpin of the success. The Paani Foundation has worked out a very careful strategy to enthuse half-abandoned villages into battling drought. The secret, of course, is Aamir‘s unique charisma that serves as the glue to enthuse and bind the people. The entire effort is voluntary and participatory and has the element of the Gandhian spirit of self-sacrifice.

Shramdaan (voluntary labour) is a typical Indian strategy, rooted in its culture, to bring people together; it builds the social capital of a community to address critical local issues. “Unless the community is united, you can’t do this task effectively. The competition is very transparent. The marks card is published on the website. But we emphasise quality, not just quantity.” says Dr Pol.

By providing information, networking with other activists, rallying people to believe in collective action, acting as a bridge to the local administration and fostering community-level discussion through discussion clubs, Satyamev Jayate has lit a powerful spark in the deadwood of lost hopes.

The process commences with Khan writing a personal letter to every gram panchayat, inviting the village to join the water competition. Each competing village then sends five representatives, including two women, for training. The four-day training includes technical trainingas well as environmental inputs.

Upon returning to their villages the representatives help prepare an extensive watershed development plan. They are also expected to mobilise people by organizing gram sabhas(village assemblies) to explain the competition and why everyone must get involved. The Paani Foundation arms the representatives with solid technical resources. Apart from learning to read contour maps, villagers are trained to construct various water harvesting structures, such as earthen dams, loose boulder structures and continuous contour trenches amongst others.

Over 5000 villagers have been trained on watershed works. Dr Pol attends gram sabha meetings and interacts with thousands of villagers via satellite. During each episode a film or theatre personality joins the doctor. A caravan from village to village facilitates this online gram sabha. Aamir and Kiran take keen interest and visit villages from time to time

The Watershed Organisation Trust (WOTR), based in Ahmednagar, is Paani Foundation’s knowledge partner. WOTR has trained 40 Panlot Sevaks—barefoot watershed technicians—to provide field guidance with three technical trainers stationed in each taluka.

The Watershed Organisation Trust (WOTR), based in Ahmednagar, is Paani Foundation’s knowledge partner. WOTR has trained 40 Panlot Sevaks—barefoot watershed technicians—to provide field guidance. Three technical trainers are stationed in each taluka.

The annual shramdaan extends over 45 days which is however not adequate for the entire exercise. Invariably, earth diggers have to be hired to dig deep continuous contour trenches (CCT), ponds and other water reservoirs.

The foundation’s strategy focuses on community-based approach by empowering stakeholders and motivates them to build a non-political rural leadership. “The pace of work depends on their enthusiasm and motivation,” says Dr Pol.“The main difference in our work is that, unlike the government or the NGO sector, we aren’t giving a single rupee to the villagers. Given the right chance, we believe our villagers can do their work by themselves.”

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has also expressed his support for Khan’s endeavour. Khan’s enterprise and initiative has helped transform the “Paani adva, Paani jive” water conversation slogan of Maharashtra into a people’s movement. Source: ummid.com

Sex Determination Case Bombay HC Issues Notice To Shah Rukh

The Bombay High Court has issued notices to Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, his wife Gauri Khan and the BMC on a petition filed by social activist Varsha Deshpande, challenging a magistrate's order refusing her application for documents pertaining to the couple's youngest child AbRam, who was born through surrogacy. Deshpande has alleged that SRK and his wife had conducted a sex determination test before AbRam’s birth and she has filed a complaint in the magistrate’s court seeking action against the Bollywood power couple and Mumbai’s Jaslok Hospital under the Pre-conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (Prohibition of Sex Selection) Act (PCPNDT). In September this year, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had given clean chit to the Khans and they informed the HC that allegations leveled against the superstar and his wife of conducting pre-birth sex determination tests of their surrogate son AbRam were baseless. Varsha has now sought documents pertaining to the surrogacy process and documents collected by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in its inquiry into the matter. On Friday, Justice R P Sondurbaldota issued notices to Shah Rukh, Gauri, Jaslok Hospital, and the civic body, and posted the matter for hearing on January 10. Source: Article

My Hollywood role should make Indians proud: Shahrukh

Not interested in taking up a stereotypical role created for Asians in Hollywood, Bollywood's superstar Shahrukh Khan says "to get a role not specific to my colour or the way I speak or act is very difficult".
He has been active in Hindi films for over two decades, has featured in more than 80 films and won the tag of "superstar", but the 47-year-old has yet to find a suitable role in international films. A hugely popular actor in many countries, one whose face has become synonymous with the huge draw of the Indian film industry, particularly the Mumbai-based Hindi film industry, King Khan feels he doesn't have the USP to work in Hollywood. Asked what made him think so, he said: "I didn't talk in terms of fan following." "I think the kind of role I would want to do in a Hollywood film is one that makes India proud. To get a role like that is not specific to my colour, or the way I speak, look or act or my age, it's very difficult," SRK told IANS in an exclusive interview. "I mean you can't go to a big filmmaking world and say write a role for a 47-year-old actor who is brown, has hair like this, acts this way, dances a bit... the role should be something that Indians should be proud of. It's too specific for me to have a USP."  PHOTO GALLERY: Shahrukh Khan & Deepika Padukone at ‘The Brunch Night with Chennai Express. He however appreciated Indian faces who are doing well on the international arena. "There are a few young boys and girls, who are doing really well internationally, and I pray they make it big," he said. Shahrukh Khan relishes and cherishes all the love and attention showered on him on the home turf and is set to woo his fans with Chennai Express. In fact, he is right now busy driving the buzz around the comedy drama, coming out Friday, his first film with new age master of comedies Rohit Shetty. Sharing his experience of working with Shetty, Shah Rukh said: "Rohit is fantastically organised. The best part about him is that he has a group of 200 trained people working under him. Rohit knows what he wants. He always delivers the best." Interestingly, in "Chennai Express" the name of Shah Rukh's character is Rahul, a screen title he has donned in a string of hits. He confesses to being a director's actor. "I'm a director's actor. I belong to a world which directors create. I enjoy being with them in their world. I want the world to see me as an actor who moulds himself according to the character his director creates for him," said Shahrukh Khan. The Hindi film industry, which is celebrating its 100 years this year, has evolved with new filmmakers enlivening the silver screen with new subjects, Shah Rukh said, adding it's not a new trend. "There's 'Gangs of Wasseypur', 'Barfi!'... all kinds of films are being made, which is good," said Shah Rukh. "There have always been all kinds of filmmakers who make films like 'Iron Man', 'Batman' and 'Chak De! India'. It's always parallel. When I did DDLJ, there was 'Maya Memsaab' too. "I always try to work on a different genre. I feel the industry has given me name, fame and money and I won't ever forgive myself if I won't do anything beneficial for Indian cinema and my fans." PHOTO GALLERY: Shahrukh Khan, Deepika Padukone walk the ramp. From romantic to villainous and from action to superhero - SRK has delved into a variety of roles. Asked how he is in real life, Shah Rukh said: "I am a little like all of them. There are parts and portions of me that you see in my characters also. If I play a father, I do it the way I would do it with my kids. If I play a lover, I behave the same way I am in real life. I would say I am a funny person but also gentle and kind."Source: ArticleImage: flickr.com

Shah Rukh Khan confirms surrogate baby, names him AbRam

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan on Tuesday confirmed for the  first  time  the  premature  birth of  his and his wife Gauri Khan's surrogate baby boy, who has been named AbRam. Shah Rukh, 47, made the news official about his surrogate baby via a statement. "Amidst all the noise that has been going around, the sweetest is the one made by our newborn baby, AbRam. He was born prematurely by several months, but has finally come home," said Shah Rukh. "Gauri and our whole family have been dealing with his health issues for a long time now," he added. Explaining his longstanding silence on the matter, he said: "As a family, our silence on this subject has been because of the personal nature of emotional strife that we have been going through due to his health." The superstar, also called the 'baadshah' of Bollywood, also put the record straight that "there was no sex determination for our child". "The baby was born much before the speculations of 'sex determination' and other 'issues' pertaining to the same were being raised in the media by some organisations. Suffice to say his coming home puts to rest completely false and at times insensitive claims of sex determination and alleged illegalities," he added. On his part, the actor-producer has also apologised to "all those other doctors and hospitals who had to face unwanted scrutiny and questioning by some parties", and he has thanked the doctor concerned, Jatin Shah, for his expertise and contribution to make the surrogacy successful. "We also wish to thank all the other doctors, nurses and medical staff who have made his life possible," added Shah Rukh, who also said the entire surrogacy process is bound by "strict confidentiality". He has appealed to all "to allow us to cherish this private moment as a family". Shah Rukh, who began his tryst with showbiz through the small screen in 1988, married Gauri in 1991. They have two children together - son Aryan,16, and daughter Suhana, 13. Source: Hindustan Times

Shah Rukh Khan: top 15 controversies he has courted

Bollywood badshah Shah Rukh Khan tends to attract controversies from all sides. King Khan has become one of the most controversial actors in B-Town owing to either his celebrity status, religion or behaviour. As we await response from actor Shah Rukh Khan on recent allegations of foetal sex determination of his reported surrogate child, here are some of the major controversies that the King Khan has encountered in his public life. 1. SRK went for foetal sex determination? After reports of Shah Rukh Khan, Gauri Khan going for a third baby surrogacy, speculations that the celeb-couple went for sex determination test were rife. On Tuesday (June 18), Maharashtra government ordered probe into the allegations. 2. Hafiz Saeed invited SRK to Pak: In an interview to Outlook Turning Points, Shah Rukh Khan said, “I sometimes become the inadvertent object of political leaders who choose to make me a symbol of all that they think is wrong and unpatriotic about Muslims in India... I have been accused of bearing allegiance to our neighbouring nation rather than my own country...”  Reacting to his statements, Lashkar-e-Taiba founder Hafiz Saeed has asked Shah Rukh Khan to move to Pakistan if he feels ‘insecure’ in India, and assured that the Bollywood actor will “enjoy all the freedom that he wants in this country."  3. Shiv Sena threatened to stall release of My Name is Khan: SRK faced the ire of Shiv Sena after he stated that he would like Pakistani cricketers to participate in the third season of Indian Premiere League. The political party even threatened to stall the release of his film My Name Is Khan. Shah Rukh Khan reacted on Twitter saying: "Sad my statements are seen as a stand against a group instead of a stand for myself and my individuality. Differences in ideology should be grounds for debates & discussion. A must for freedom of thought. To see it any other way is so unfortunate." 4. SRK banned from entering Wankhede Stadium: The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) officials have lodged a police complaint against Kolkata Knight Riders' co-owner Shah Rukh Khan for his alleged misbehaviour at the Wankhede Stadium. They have even decided to ban him for life from entering the premises. "He misbehaved and abused the MCA security personnel as well as MCA officials, including our president Vilasrao Deshmukh, after the IPL match," said MCA secretary Nitin Dalal. 5. SRK-Salman Khan: There was an time when Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan called each other brothers. But now the rivalry between the two is out in the open. While Salman says "SRK and I can never be friends," SRK thinks "Salman and I don't talk which is absolutely right." So what went wrong? Things apparently got ugly at Katrina Kaif's birthday bash in 2008. It is believed that SRK made inappropriate comments about Salman's ex-flame Aishwarya Rai Bachchan which annoyed him. King Khan in an interview had said that Salman got angry because he turned down a cameo in Main Aur Mrs Khanna (while Salman agreed to do a guest appearance in Om Shanti Om). Salman in turn said he never offered him the film, adding, "Shah Rukh was like my brother. He used to call me sir, sir during his struggling days." In 2011, on Koffee With Karan, SRK publicly apologised to the actor saying: "If Salman is angry with me, it is 100% my fault." However, Salman retorted saying SRK's apology was for TRPs. At Mukesh Ambani's bash in Tendulkar's honour, Salman took a dig at SRK saying: "Tendulkar karecord todna mushkil hi nahi namumkin hai. Aur yeh Don nahi main bol raha hu." King Khan reacted saying: "I get numb by the kind of stories I keep hearing about myself. I try not to take them seriously or comment about them." 6. SRK-Priyanka Chopra: Family man Shah Rukh Khan has found himself in a link-up controversy for the first time in his career. While SRK is maintaining a dignified silence over the issue, PC isn't taking it too well. At a camera launch event, when a reporter asked her about her alleged link-up with SRK, the Fashion star lost it and said with a straight face: "By being extremely loud, doesn't mean I'll answer your questions sir. Thank You." At the first look launch of her upcoming film Teri Meri Kahani opposite Shahid Kapoor, Priyanka denied SRK was the man who made her blush. "I never said anything of that sort," she retorted. However, she had admitted it on Karan Johar's talk show Koffee with Karan. Shahid and the filmmaker had even teased her with SRK's name. She is reportedly not on good terms with his wife Gauri Khan and his pal Karan Johar because of these rumours.  7. Shah Rukh Khan-Big B, Amar Singh: Shah Rukh Khan allegedly supported the event organisers when Amar Singh objected to the fact that front row seats were not alloted to him or his close friend Amitabh Bachchan at an awards function in 2007. 8. SRK-Gauri Khan: The fact that Gauri Khan is missing from the IPL action is creating a strong buzz about a trouble in paradise. Although SRK's team Kolkata Knigh Riders is performing well this season, Gauri isn't there by her hubby's side to cheer and support the team. The Don star was recently spotted with his sister Shenaz and his children Aryan and Suhana at a nightspot in Mumbai sans Gauri Khan.  Is SRK's link-up with PC the reason? Who knows! 9. SRK-Aamir Khan: During a promotional event of his TV debut Satyamev Jayate, Aamir Khan praised his colleagues who made it big on TV like Amitabh Bachchan (Kaun Banega Crorepati), Hrithik Roshan (Just Dance) and Salman Khan (Dus Ka Dum). He simply forgot to mention SRK, who has hosted shows like KBC, Zor Ka Jhatka and Kya Aap Panchvi Paas Se Tez Hain. When asked about SRK, he ignored the question. Aamir Khan had also reacted to SRK's detention saying: "I have never faced such problem." Aamir had earlier posted on his blog that a dog called Shah Rukh was licking his legs: "Shah Rukh is licking my feet and I am feeding him biscuits every now and then. What more can I ask for? Now, before you jump to any conclusions let me add that Shah Rukh is the name of our dog. And before you jump to any further conclusions let me add that I had nothing to do with naming him. In fact Shah Rukh is the dog of the caretakers of our house." Incidentally Aamir is quite close to Salman! 10. SRK-Shirish Kunder: The RA.One actor allegedly assaulted Farah Khan's husband and filmmaker Shirish Kunder at Sanjay Dutt's Agneepath bash. Farah Khan also SMSed reporters saying: "Shahrukh has always told me that physical abuse is the worst way 2 sort out a problem, n that its means the person who's hitting has either a personal or professional crisis going on, n it saddens me 2 see him doing the same (sic)." However, the truce happened after Shirish and Farah, along with latter's brother Sajid Khan and their common friend Sajid Nadiadwala, went to SRK's home, Mannat. 11. RK-Abhijeet Bhattacharya: Another addition to SRK's enemy list is Abhijeet Bhattacharya. The singer recently blasted SRK in an interview saying the actor should apologise to him for not giving him due credit in Main Hoon Na and Om Shanti Om. When asked by a tabloid to comment on what Abhijeet said, SRK quipped: "Isn't it a coincidence that whoever doesn't want to work with me becomes famous?" 12. SRK-Airport: Part 1: In August 2009, SRK was detained at the Newark Airport in New Jersey for nearly two hours because of his last name. The actor was visiting the country to attend a South Asian event where he was the guest of honour and was released after Congress MP Rajiv Shukla spoke to the authorities in the US. 13. SRK-Airport: Part 2: King Khan was detained again in April at a New York airport by immigration officials after arriving from India in a private plane with Nita Ambani, to address students at Yale University. While Nita, wife of Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani, and the rest of their group were cleared immediately, Khan was stopped and was given immigration clearance only after about two hours. He laughed it off with a generous dose of sarcasm. "Whenever I start feeling too arrogant, I always take a trip to America. The immigration guys kicked the star out of stardom," Khan said, addressing the students at the Yale University where he was honoured as a Chubb Fellow.  14. Sunil Gavaskar-SRK: Sunil Gavaskar and Kolkata Knight Riders' owner Shah Rukh Khan had a dirty war of words in 2009. In his column for the Hindustan Times, Gavaskar termed John Buchanan (coach of KKR) a "failed former cricketer making a living telling international players to do what he couldn't do". 15. Smoking SRK: Shahrukh Khan has been spotted smoking in public several times. When he was caught smoking in Sawai Maan Singh Stadium in Jaipur, a complaint was filed against him. I was scared to take up TV show: Aamir Khan

Mumbai: Actor-producer Aamir Khan, soon to debut on television with his upcoming show 'Satyameva
Jayate', said he was scared to take up the project. "Initially I was scared to do the show as we were travelling on a different path. I was worried. It was in a way difficult, but we knew what we are doing is different, but it comes straight from our heart," he said. The 47-year-old actor has been working on the concept for over two years after Uday Shankar, CEO, STAR India, suggested that he get into TV. "I have been working on the show for more than two years. It has taken a toll on my life, films are getting postponed, and other personal things. All I can say is we have left no stone unturned... we want to connect with the people, it is in a way like 'Bharat Jodo Abhiyaan'. "Through this show we understand the problem of the people, we are not here to make a change. I am no one to change anything. I don't think I am in the position to. I feel understanding a problem and feeling it or holding one's hand or hugging is also important. I may not have the solution, but at least I can hear and understand," Aamir said after unveiling the first promotional song of the show here. Aamir also said that entertainment does not necessarily mean making people laugh. "I am an entertainer, my attempt is to connect with the people. But entertainment can be of any form, it need not be making people laugh everytime." About the TRP race, Aamir said, "I have no clue what TRP, GRP mean. I don't know how it is calculated, I don't get into all of this. Also, I don't know if they will like it or not." The actor is keeping everything about the show under the wraps. As a result, no one is aware of the format. "I don't want to talk much about how the show will be, and about its format. I want everyone to see it directly on TV." Aamir said he has travelled extensively over several weeks to various places in Rajasthan, Kashmir, Kerala, Delhi, Punjab, and even in the North-East, to shoot for the show. Sukhwinder Singh has sung a 22-minute song, written by Prasoon Joshi and set to the tune by Ram Sampath, for the show. Aamir has also asked various brand managers not to screen any of his ads during the show, for the fear that they may dilute the show's impact. Salman Khan does not want to do an Action Film

Bollywood Actor Salman Khan is not keen on doing an Action film soon. In a recent interview Salman said "I am the 'Tiger', I can't make excuses like 'I am unwell, I can't do it'," Salman, who recently underwent treatment for trigeminal neuralgia in the US. "I have done all the things like running, beating, falling, jumping from one place to another.... if you are physically fit, you can perhaps do all this. But it takes a lot of toll on your body as you are doing the same thing the whole day," he explained. Salman's hard work seems to be paying rich dividends as his espionage romp "Ek Tha Tiger" raked in Rs.31.5 crore on its opening day. Now Salman wants to go back to the romantic genre. "I am doing a romantic film soon. Action is very tough... One has to get up at odd hours, like early morning, to do action films, work till late night, do action in worst conditions like in hot weather, fighting on rooftops and dirty places. It is difficult," he said. The 47-year-old is destiny's child. Controversy, it appears, could be his middle name; he is neck deep in legal battles and health issues and has yet emerged box-office king with back-to-back action blockbusters - "Wanted", "Dabangg", "Ready" and "Bodyguard". All of them entered the Rs.100 crore club and "Ek Tha Tiger" is on a record-breaking spree too. After setting a new record by raking in Rs.31.5 crore on opening day, it has also smashed the weekend collection record by earning Rs.45 crore. In Salman's view, with the increasing number of theatres and the rise in ticket prices, Rs.100 crore could soon be equivalent to Rs.10 crore. "The exact collection starts from single screens and multiplexes in cities and small towns. With ticket prices and number of theatres also increasing, the films are likely to do a huge amount of business. Soon, this Rs.100 crore will be like Rs.10 crore," Salman said. "And talking about the overseas business, who knows what business the film is exactly doing in overseas? Once the distributor starts giving actual figures, the numbers will definitely go up." Salman forayed into Bollywood with 1988 film "Biwi Ho Toh Aisi" in a small role as Rekha's spoilt brother-in-law. Success was his the very next year with the 1989 romance "Maine Pyaar Kiya". There was no looking back after that. He climbed the success ladder rapidly and churned out romantic hits like "Love", "Saajan", "Hum Aapke Hain Kaun" and "Hum Dil Chuke Sanam". He then did romantic comedies like "Mujhse Shaadi Karogi", "Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya" and "Partner". In 2009, he endorsed action with "Wanted", the first in the series to hit the screen. Source: Top 10 Bollywood

The actor ill soon leave for a three-month long schedule to Chicago, USA, for Yashraj’s Dhoom 3. And he wants his family to accompany him, including his son, Azad Rao Khan. So the tiny tot recently visited the US consulate for his first visa interview. Aamir and Kiran's son, Azad Rao Khan was born through a surrogate mother. A source close to the star reveals, “Azad recently had to appear for his first interview with his mom at the US consulate to get his visa. This will be his first trip abroad.” Aamir leaves for the US on August 3 with wife Kiran Rao and son Azad. He will only be back in the first week of November. Incidentally, 2012 has been a very busy year for the actor, usually known for doing one project at a time. But this year, he was juggling his TV show Satyamev Jayate while working on Talaash and Dhoom 3. Hence Aamir hasn’t been able to spend quality time with Kiran and Azad. The source adds, “He has been trying to be around Azad in mornings before he leaves for work. However, there have been several days when he has started his day as early as 5 am. That’s why Aamir decided that they both should accompany him while he shoots for Dhoom 3, as his schedule will be more disciplined with nothing to do apart from working out and shooting.”Source: Hindustan Times

Post the movie, now notably known as Rancho's school, not only it gets loads of tourists, but has found sponsors for the under-privileged studying there.  Prasad Eledath, principal of Druk White Lotus School, said, "We have sponsors from all over the world. We have sponsors from the west and from some other parts of the country." "We have two network organizations. One is the Drukpa Trust and the other is the Live to Love. These two support the school immensely as we are able to find sponsors through their effort. A lot of collaboration that is taking place."  The financial help is important for the children who come to study from far flung areas in the mountain as the yearly expenditure per  student  comes  to  about  Rs.30,000.  "We  have
around  200 children who come  from remote areas. For many of them, we would find sponsors who would take care of the cost related to their education. For them, it is completely free unless there is some basic cost that is involved," Eledath told. The Druk White Lotus School in Shey, 15 km from Leh town, has the strength of 671 kids. The school has been providing education since September 2001 and has expanded to class 10th over the years. However, now the institute plans to upgrade their education to senior secondary level. Annie Smith, Education Advisor and School Management Committee of DWLS, told, "We are looking into upgrading for the 11th and 12th standards. Aamir in Parliament to discuss drug prices

New Delhi: Aamir Khan met a parliamentary panel to provide inputs on medical issues. Rajya Sabha MP Shanta Kumar announced that the actor had given his views on the issue of drug pricing. Kumar heads the parliamentary standing committee on commerce. Doctors invited by Aamir to an episode of Satyamev Jayate telecast on multiple channels last week spoke of doctors taking payments, or “cuts”, from fellow medics for referring patients to specialists or to testing laboratories, and from drug companies for prescribing medicines. Broadcast on May 27, the episode also addressed issues like overpricing of life-saving drugs. The episode on turned the spotlight on medical misdemeanours in India, angering sections of doctors, but many in the medical profession say the episode merely laid bare widely known practices. The fallout of the show has been noteworthy. Parliament has only now passed a bill on stringent action against those guilty of child sex abuse, and the Rajasthan government has promised to create fast track courts which will resolve pending female foeticide cases in the state.Source: News Bullet

I have to do what I think is right: Aamir

By Bhawana Somaaya: Aamir Khan has been on a roll for sometime now both personally and professionally. He has become a father third time around and produced a massive scale TV production which has become a topic of discussion in the parliament. I meet Aamir at his Pali Hill residence. He is relishing a holiday after months and cannot believe that he is actually putting up his feet and chatting with me. It is a lazy afternoon and I decide to just sit and chat with him rather than ask tough questions. The last few months have been exceedingly hectic. How do you manage your time? I have been keeping a crazy schedule for more than a couple of months, I would say almost a year or more. It is tough but if you eat and exercise right, a lot of problems get resolved. Sleep is important as well and most important is to work cheerfully, I don’t like screaming and shouting. Stress is inevitable in creative field, but it can be dealt with calmly. I have realised there is solution for every problem. Have you not taken on too much at the same time?  Yes and no, because this is how show business operates. I was in talks with the channel for my TV production for a long time. Similarly I was committed to Reema Kagti’s ‘Talaash’ for a long time. It is difficult to define a rigid time span for such pursuits. They happen when they have to. Most celebrities don’t admit to having a surrogate baby, what you did was unusual?  I think it is subjective how each one feels. We had been trying for a baby for sometime but it did not happen after Kiran suffered a couple of miscarriages. That’s when we took this decision. Azaad is a surrogate baby, but we are his biological parents. It is the way you made the news public that made all the difference?  I did it the way I wanted to. Kiran and I were very clear that we were going to be upfront and not allow others to speculate about us. We informed everybody when we were ready to share the news, beyond that we did not want any invasion on our privacy. To be fair to the media, they respected that. How did your colleagues and friends react to the news? They were all happy for us. In fact, the congratulations are still pouring in. It is a great feeling and we are relishing it. It is funny how the house changes with the arrival of a tiny tot. There are new adjustments, though the mother has more adjustments to make than the father. Reema Kagti is the second director you have worked with after Kiran Rao in ‘Dhobi Ghat’? That’s right though I would not like to discriminate my directors via gender. Reema is clear about what she wants and that always helps the actor. It is always a give and take relationship with the writer- director and director- actor and this reflects in the film. Most of the great films have been possible because of great team work. In ‘Talaash’ you are working with Kareena for the second time and Rani Mukherjee for the third time, how much have they changed? Kareena was superb in a small role in ‘3 Idiots’ and is a revelation in ‘Talaash’. Rani was a fresher in ‘Ghulam’ and even though our song was so popular I don’t know why we did not get a film together for a long time. Then came ‘The Rising’ where she played a courtesan and now ‘Talaash’ where she plays my wife. I don’t wish to disclose more about the film except that it is an interesting film on human relationships. Was it a tough decision to delay the release of a ready film ‘Talaash’ to put ‘Satyamev Jayate’ on air first?  Both are my productions so the privilege and prerogative should be mine and I always have a reason for why I do what I do. I have a simple theory. I have to do what I think is right and give it my best shot. Under the circumstances I felt that if we released ‘Talaash’ now I would not be able to give it my 100 percent in the promotion and took a decision to get over with ‘Satyamev Jayate’, so I’m able to give the film my complete concentration. Your director accepted that or was she impatient?  She accepted it. This is the way I function. ‘Delhi Belly’ was ready for over a year before we began work on the post production. Same with ‘Peepli Live’ or even for that matter ‘Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na’. Ashutosh will tell you how long we had been working on ‘Lagaan’ before we started shooting and how long we worked on post before we released it. I’m a producer, but I also have to give time as an actor to my other assignments and the other way round as well. How long did you take on ‘Satyamev Jayate’?  After we agreed on the concept of the show with the channel which resulted after innumerable meetings my team and I researched on the show for two full years. The stories, the packaging, the music has been a long process of brainstorming. The stories we saw in the first episode were heart breaking. The show must have been a long emotional journey for the entire team?  You have hit the nail because while the audience watches it just once and then another set of stories the following week, my team and I endure the heartache a number of times. We have so brittle that we are breaking down again and again. Perhaps all of you must consider group therapy? Yes, that is a good suggestion. All of us need to cleanse our system to be able to return to our normal life again. Though let me tell you that coming home to a gurgling baby is therapeutic. I hold my son in my arms and feel healed. You sound emotional?  I have always been like this but this is the first time people are getting to see this side of me on the screen. So far on the big screen one has cried with glycerin but these are real tears triggered by what’s happening to real people. Source: The Hans India
