Now virus hits Modi’s family, aunt Narmadaben dies of Covid-19

Now Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s family has been affected by the pandemic coronavirus. Modi’s aunt Narmadaben, 80, died of Covid-19 at a hospital in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, on Tuesday evening. She lived with his family in the New Runip area of Ahmedabad.

Modi’s younger brother Prahlad Modi said Aunt Narmadaben’s condition deteriorated after she was infected with Covid-19. She was admitted to a government hospital 10 days ago. He died there on Tuesday evening.

He added that Modi’s uncle Jagjivandas had died many years ago. He was a few years younger than the Prime Minister’s father. However, Modi has not yet said anything about the death of the family member.

Covid-19 has taken a terrible turn in India since the beginning of March. Infection is on the rise. Concerns about well-being are also increasing. The people of the country are wailing for oxygen shortage. Many are blaming the “lack of foresight” of the Center for such a situation.More than 315,000 people were infected with the Covid-19 within 24 hours from Monday morning to Tuesday morning in India only. At the same time, another 2,812 people died. Source: https://www.daily-bangladesh.com

Modi congratulates Mamata

Indian prime minister Narendra Modi congratulated West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee this evening and assured that the Centre will "continue to extend all possible support to the West Bengal Government to fulfil people's aspirations and also to overcome the COVID-19 pandemic". Counting the BJP's gains in a state where it only had a marginal presence, he thanked the people of Bengal for their "blessing" to the party.

"From a negligible presence earlier, BJP's presence has significantly increased," PM Modi tweeted as his party -- which aspired to 200 of Bengal's 294 seats -- looks set to win only 70-plus seats. Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress is likely to win more than the 211 seats it won in 2016.

PM Modi's congratulations came hours after several of his party leaders, including Union Minister Rajnath Singh, extended their good wishes to the Chief Minister.

In another tweet, the Prime Minister -- who addressed more than 50 meetings as part of the BJP's Mission Bengal – said: "I would like to thank my sisters and brothers of West Bengal who have blessed our party. From a negligible presence earlier, BJP’s presence has significantly increased. BJP will keep serving the people. I applaud each and every Karyakarta for their spirited effort in the polls."

The BJP has been aiming to expand their footprint in the eastern India since coming to power at the Centre in 2014. In 2015, then BJP chief Amit Shah had laid down a 200-seat goal to the state unit of the party. But over the years, while the BJP has managed to bring the states of the northeast under its control, Bengal has proved elusive yet again.

For many in the party, the disappointment has been sharp, especially after the 2019 Lok Sabha polls where the BJP managed to win 18 of the state's 42 Lok Sabha seats – a long way up from two seats.
But Babul Supriyo was the only leader who refused to congratulate her.

In a short, angry Facebook post, Mr Supriyo – whose Asansol seat was a BJP stronghold long before 2019 -- said Bengal's voters had made a "historic mistake"."Neither will I congratulate Mamata Banerjee... nor do I wish to say I 'respect' the people's verdict... sincerely think people of Bengal made a historic mistake by not giving BJP a chance... by electing this corrupt, incapable, dishonest government and a cruel lady back to power," his message read. Prez Biden and PM Modi commit towards greater Indo-US ties; work against COVID, terrorism

FEB 09, 2021 WASHINGTON: US President Joe Biden and Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a phone call on Monday set up an ambitious agenda to take the bilateral relationship to the next level. Biden and Modi committed that the US and India will work closely together to win the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, renew their partnership on climate change, rebuild the global economy in a way that benefits the people of both countries, and stand together against the scourge of global terrorism, the White House said in a readout of the call. The leaders agreed to continuing close cooperation to promote a free and open Indo-Pacific, including support for freedom of navigation, territorial integrity and a stronger regional architecture through the Quad, the White House said after the first phone call that Biden had with Modi as the president of the United States. After being sworn in as the 46th President of the United States, Biden so far had phone call with nine foreign leaders. Traditionally the new American president makes first phone calls to the leaders of two neighbouring countries Canada and Mexico. Thereafter, Biden called leaders of close American allies, including Britain, France, Germany, South Korea and Australia. In between, he called Russian President Vladimir Putin, which was necessitated due to the extension of the New Start Treaty for another five years. Modi is the first foreign leader, whom Biden has spoken with beyond neighbours and key NATO allies, reflecting on the significance his administration attaches to ties with India. "The President underscored his desire to defend democratic institutions and norms around the world and noted that a shared commitment to democratic values is the bedrock for the US-India relationship," the White House said, adding that the two leaders resolved that the rule of law and the democratic process must be upheld in Burma (now Myanmar). Biden and Modi agreed to stay in close touch on a range of global challenges and look forward to what the United States and India will achieve together for their people and for their nations, the White House said. "We have an ambitious agenda for cooperation, and you will see active engagement in the days ahead," India's Ambassador to the US, Taranjit Singh Sandhu, told PTI after the phone call between the two leaders. The two leaders had a very warm and wide-ranging conversation on Monday. "Based on our shared values and common strategic interests, we are committed to advancing India-US Strategic Partnership and closely working together with like-minded countries in meeting regional and global challenges - COVID-19 pandemic, economic recovery, clean energy and climate change, fight against terrorism, cooperation in the Indo-Pacific and beyond," Sandhu said. This was the second phone call between Biden and Modi after the November 3rd presidential elections. The first one was on November 17. During their November 17 phone call, the two leaders reiterated their firm commitment to bilateral strategic partnership and discussed shared priorities such as COVID-19 pandemic, energy and climate change, and cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region, Sandhu said in an earlier interview last week. In recent days, External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar, Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh and National Security Adviser Shri Ajit Doval have spoken to their US counterparts, Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and the National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan respectively. These conversations have been very warm and forward looking, he said. In his earlier interview, Sandhu said that India looks forward to working with the new Administration and other stakeholders around five baskets. "First, given the pandemic, cooperation in healthcare and pharma and COVID-19 management, including affordable medicines and vaccines; second, the digital space, including information and communication technology, innovation and start-ups; third, the energy sector, including LNG, renewables, solar that will allow us to combat climate change; fourth, the education and knowledge partnership; and finally, our cooperation in strategic and defense areas, including in the Indo-Pacific," he said. Start-ups should build future Indian multinationals, give Brand India a new global identity: Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday gave a call for start-ups be set up in all sectors for building future Indian multinationals which, he said, would give 'Brand India' a new global identity in the times to come.

Speaking after laying the foundation stone of IIM-Sambalpur's permanent campus in Odisha through videoconference, Modi said: "This is a perfect time. Today's start-ups are tomorrow's multinationals. These start-ups are emerging in Tier 2 and 3 cities. These start-ups will play a big role in establishing multinationals."

Modi said that the scope for start-ups is expanding. "You have to prepare yourself for new possibilities. Our youths are responsible for giving 'Brand India' a new global identity."

Modi said that the permanent campus of the Indian Institute of Management-Sambalpur will not only showcase the culture and resources of Odisha but will also give Odisha a global recognition in the field of management.

He said that the country recently witnessed the trend of Indian MNCs as opposed to earlier trend of multinationals coming to India from outside.

Noting that India has seen more unicorns in recent troubled times, Modi said that rapid reforms are taking place in the agriculture sector.

In such a scenario, Modi said, students should align their career plans with national aspirations.

"In this new decade, it is your responsibility to give Brand India a global recognition," the Prime Minister said.

Modi asked Indians students to work on local products holding great potential, such as handicraft, textiles and tribal art.

He also asked them to work on better management of abundant minerals and other resources in the area, as all this will contribute to the Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) campaign.

"IIM students will need to find innovative solutions for making local global as they can work as a bridge between Atmanirbhar Bharat Mission, local products and international collaboration. You have to show your management skills in tune with the mantra of innovation, integrity and inclusiveness."

Modi talked about the new management challenges in the light of new technologies like additive printing, changing production techniques, logistics, and supply chain management.

"These technologies coupled with digital connectivity, and work from anywhere concept have turned the world into a global village. India has undertaken rapid reforms in recent months and tried not only to keep pace with the changes but also tried to anticipate and surpass them," he added.

"Management is not just handling big companies but also taking care of lives," Modi said. Source: i

Transforming India's urban landscape through Light House Projects

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday laid the foundation stone of the Light House Projects (LHP) under the Global Housing Technology Challenge (GHTC-India) and said the worldwide challenge of COVID-19 has given the scope to innovate and incubate with new technology. Modi said these six projects are really like lighthouses at sea, giving a new direction to the housing construction in the country.

The six LHP has been conceptualised by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, headed by Hardeep Singh Puri, a former Indian diplomat, and aims to identify and mainstream several innovative technologies from across the world that are sustainable and disaster-resilient.

He said at one time housing schemes were not the priority for the governments as much as it should have been. "However, we know that transformation is impossible without all-around development. The country has adopted a new approach and a different road ahead," he said.

LHPs will be constructed in Agartala, Lucknow, Indore, Rajkot, Chennai and Ranchi, with each location getting more than 1,000 houses for the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS).

Modi said: "This global challenge of COVID-19 has given us the scope to innovate and incubate with new technology. From today, work is starting on six Light House Projects at different locations. These projects will be completed by modern technology and innovative processes."

"These projects are incubation centres for our planners, engineers, architects and students to learn from. They will also be able to experiment on new technology," Modi said.

Modi said to promote research and innovation, we're running the ASHA India project. Through this, we're developing new and cheap technology to build houses for the 21st century.

Citing examples of the use of new technology in construction, Modi said that in Ranchi, we are using 3D construction system from Germany. In this pattern, every room will be built separately and then the entire structure will be connected like lego blocks.

"In Agartala, we are building homes using steel frame technology from New Zealand. This is to prevent the houses from the perpetual risk of earthquakes," he said, adding, "In Lucknow, we are using technology from Canada. Plaster and paint would not be needed in this and pre-built walls will be used."

The period of construction is maximum of 12 months from the date these sites are handed over to the construction agency after all statutory approvals. Source: https://southasiamonitor.org

US President Donald Trump has presented America's highest military decoration, The Legion of Merit, to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his personal leadership that "accelerated India's emergence as a global power" and "elevated the strategic partnership between the US and India".

Official sources said, The Legion of Merit, Degree Chief Commander, bestowed on Prime Minister Modi on behalf of the President, is a rarely-awarded, prestigious decoration that can only be bestowed by Trump, typically to heads of state or heads of government of other countries.

India's Ambassador to the US, Taranjit Singh Sandhu, accepted the award on behalf of the Prime Minister from the US National Security Advisor Robert O'Brien at the White House.

The citation with the award states: "For exceptionally meritorious service as the Prime Minister of the Republic of India from May 2014 to August 2020. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's steadfast leadership and vision have accelerated India's emergence as a global power and elevated the strategic partnership between the US and India to address global challenges. Prime Minister Modi's personal engagement expanded US-India ties across all facets of the relationship, helping to establish a strong foundation for an enduring partnership that is based on shared commitment to freedom, democratic principles, the equal treatment of all citizens, and the rule of law.

"India is a key partner for the US in the Indo-Pacific, where the two countries are increasing collaboration to ensure freedom of the seas, open and transparent investment and infrastructure development, secure and reliable digital networks, and good governance."

In a glowing tribute, the citation adds: "Prime Minister Modi's personal initiative strengthened the defence partnership between the United States and India, enhancing the US' ability to secure joint military cooperation that addressed shared challenges. His efforts to expand India's economic cooperation with the US has advanced prosperity, investment and job creation in both countries.

"Prime Minister Modi's superior effort, personal leadership, and unwavering commitment to advancing strategic cooperation between the United States and India and promoting global peace and prosperity reflect great credit upon himself, the Indian armed forces, and his country."

The Legion of Merit, Degree Chief Commander is a domed five-pointed American white star plaque of heraldic form bordered in purplish-red enamel 215/16 inches circumscribing diameter with 13 white stars on a blue field emerging from a circle of clouds; backing the star, a laurel wreath with pierced, crossed arrows pointing outward between each arm of the star and the wreath. The reverse is engraved with the words 'United States of America'.

In September this year, after a very long gap, President Donald Trump awarded the Legion of Merit, Degree Chief Commander, to Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmed Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, Amir of the State of Kuwait.

PM calls on Indian industry to focus on R&D, enhance manufacturing

Calling on the Indian industry to make more efforts towards making India self-reliant, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday urged the country's private sector to contribute more towards research and development (R&D) and come up with more investments.

Speaking at an ASSOCHAM event virtually, Modi said that in order to achieve the goal of 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' or self-reliant India, manufacturing should be given special focus.

"We are coming up with continuous reforms to enhance manufacturing," he said.

Citing, the high inflow of foreign institutional investments along with other global investments, into India amid the pandemic, the Prime Minister said that the approach of foreign investors and industry has changed and those who questioned the need for investing in India earlier, saying "why India" now want to invest in India and their perception has changed to "why not India".

Modi flays opposition Shooting from farmers' shoulders on agri laws

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday flayed the opposition for supporting farmers to oppose the three new central agricultural laws, claiming that the rival parties were using the shoulders of farmers to attack his government.

Addressing the Kisan Mahasammelan in Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh virtually, he said that opposition parties were playing games to regain lost political ground by creating a web of confusion and lies.

"I wish to tell all political parties that they can keep political credit. I don't want credit. I only want the lives of Indian farmers to be easy, want their prosperity, and modernity in farming. Stop misleading them, stop confusing them," Modi remarked.

Taking a dig at the opposition without naming any party, the Prime Minister said that he felt that they were pained not by the improvements brought about in the agricultural laws by his government but by the fact that Modi had been able to do what they had been saying all these years but could not do.

Modi also listed the advantages of the new agricultural laws enacted in September.

"These agrarian reform laws atone for the sins committed in the past decades by tying farmers to agricultural 'mandis' only. I can say with confidence that there is no reason for mistrust or room for lies in the recent agricultural reforms we have brought about."

Referring to the problems farmers faced in the past, Modi said: "Today, there is no news about shortage of urea; farmers do not have to face batons of police to buy urea. We have worked with sincerity to remove this problem of farmers. I will like to remind farmers about the urea situation in the past. Remember, what the situation was 7-8 years ago? Whether farmers had to stand in queues overnight to buy urea or not? In many places, were there news about lathicharge on farmers or not?"

Modi again strongly defended the three new central agricultural laws, pointing out that these laws as part of the reforms had not come into existence overnight.

"There has been a lot of discussion on the new farm laws for the past many days. These agricultural reform laws did not come about overnight. Every government in the past has discussed these issues in the last 20-22 years. We also discussed them extensively. More or less, all farmer organisations have discussed it -- farmers, their unions, agricultural experts, agricultural economists and scientists, progressive farmers have been continuously demanding reforms in the agricultural sector."

Modi also asked the farmers to seek answers from those who had been advocating these agricultural reforms in their poll manifestos but did nothing. (IANS) Source: https://southasiamonitor.org

Modi accepts Britain's G7 summit invitation

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday accepted the invitation of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson to be part of the G7 meeting of the world's most advanced economies, to be chaired by the UK in 2021, seeking to build a wider alliance against China's growing power.

British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab handed over a letter from Johnson, inviting the Prime Minister to the G7 meeting.

Modi thanked Raab and accepted the invitation, the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) confirmed in a statement on Wednesday.

The development comes after Johnson's office earlier announced that it had extended the offer to Indian, South Korean and Australian leaders to take part in the G7 meeting, "delivering the Prime Minister's ambition to work with a group of like-minded democracies to advance shared interests and tackle common challenges".

Recalling his recent telephone conversation with British PM, Modi stressed the importance of the India-UK partnership in the post-Covid world.

He called for an ambitious and outcome-oriented 360-degree roadmap covering trade and investment, defence and security, migration and mobility, education, energy, climate change and health, in order to tap the full potential of the bilateral relationship.

Modi also conveyed his keenness to receive Johnson in New Delhi next month, on the occasion of India's 72nd Republic Day celebrations. During his visit, Johnson will be just the second British leader since Indian independence to attend India's Republic Day parade in New Delhi as a guest of honour, after John Major in 1993.

Raab also stressed the priority that the UK government attaches to elevating relations with India, based on "shared values and interests and the potential to address common global challenges together".

Britain's relationship with China has slid to its most confrontational levels in a generation, chiefly because of the national security law Beijing has imposed in Hong Kong and London's decision to ban 5G network services by Huawei Technologies, which it contends is closely linked to the Chinese government.

Increasing concerns over China's assertive moves in the Indo-Pacific have also resulted in greater diplomatic efforts in the region by the US, Britain and the European Union - with India, Australia and the 10-nation Asean group at the forefront of their focus.  Source: https://southasiamonitor.org

PM Modi says mobile technology to be used for COVID-19 vaccination drive

DEC 08, 2020 NEW DELHI: With the chances of a COVID-19 vaccine being available soon increasing, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said the mobile technology will be used for mass inoculation against the pandemic. Speaking at the India Mobile Congress, he said mobile technology has enabled benefits worth billions of dollars to reach the deserving and also helped the poor and vulnerable during the pandemic. "It is also with the help of mobile technology that we will embark on one of the world's largest COVID-19 vaccination drive," he said. He did not provide details. Three leading coronavirus vaccine developers -- Pfizer Inc and AstraZeneca Plc and Bharat Biotech -- have applied for emergency use authorization in India. While Pfizer India has applied to drug regulator for permission to import its experimental mRNA vaccine for sale and distribution without the requirement for local clinical trials, Serum Institute of India Ltd, AstraZeneca's India vaccine partner, has applied for emergency use authorisation using data from Phase-III trials that were conducted locally, as well as in Brazil and the UK. Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech has sought nod Covaxin which is being indigenously developed in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). The applications mean that a mass vaccine effort could be shortly underway in a nation that has the world's second-largest coronavirus caseload. At the IMC, Modi said, "We need to work together to ensure a timely roll-out of 5G to leapfrog into the future and empower millions of Indians." He also pitched for making India a global hub for telecom equipment, design, development and manufacturing. Speaking on mobile technology, he said it was because of this that the government was able to provide benefits worth billions of dollars to millions of Indians. It is because of mobile technology that we will enable smooth contactless interface on toll booths," he said. Copyright © Jammu Links News, Source: Jammu Links News

Indian PM Modi assures Covid vax soon

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday announced that there would not be much delay in the availability of COVID-19 vaccine in India.

However, he once again reminded his countrymen to continue to exercise caution and follow all necessary COVID-19 protection measures like social distancing, use of mask and focus on hand sanitisation, until the vaccines are out.

"Awaiting Corona's vaccine. As per my recent discussion with scientists, I hope there will be no more delay now. But there should be no carelessness in following Covid prevention measures," the Prime Minister said.

Modi's message came around 10 days after he visited India's top vaccine hubs personally and reviewed the development of coronavirus vaccine and its manufacturing process.

On November 28, the Prime Minister held a three-city vaccine tour with a visit to pharma major Zydus Cadila's plant in Gujarat, Bharat BioTech in Hyderabad and Serum Institute of India (SII) in Pune.

Zydus Cadila drug maker has announced that the first phase of clinical trial of its COVID-19 vaccine candidate, ZyCoV-D, has been completed and it commenced the second phase of clinical trials in August.

Bharat BioTech, which is working on Covaxin, pitched as India's first indigenous vaccine candidate. However, the SII, which has partnered with global pharma giant AstraZeneca and Oxford University for a COVID-19 vaccine, is also focussed on the job. Source: https://southasiamonitor.org
