Canada, US, Mexico brace for World Cup extravaganza

MEXICO CITY - The largest and most complex World Cup in history kicks off in just over a year's time, with the United States, Canada and Mexico co-hosting the football extravaganza against a backdrop of political tension triggered by Donald Trump.

Forty-eight teams and millions of fans are set to descend on North America for the first-ever World Cup shared by three nations, with the tournament getting underway on June 11 next year.

In theory, the 23rd edition of the most popular sporting spectacle on the planet has all the makings of a successful tournament.

An array of venues ranging from Mexico's iconic Estadio Azteca to the glittering $5 billion SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles will play host to 104 games spread over nearly six weeks.

The United States will host the bulk of those fixtures -- 78 -- with Canada and Mexico staging 13 each.

All games from the quarter-finals onwards will be held in the United States, with the tournament culminating in the final at New Jersey's 82,500-seater MetLife Stadium on 19 July 2026.

American officials believe the return of the World Cup to the country -- 32 years after the United States hosted the 1994 finals -- could represent a watershed moment for football in the country.

"The World Cup is going to raise the attention of the sport in ways that nobody ever dreamed of," said Don Garber, the commissioner of Major League Soccer.

FIFA's President Gianni Infantino, meanwhile, has been hyping next year's finals as the equivalent of "104 Super Bowls", contrasting the World Cup's estimated six billion viewers to the 120 million or so who tune in for the climax of the NFL season.

There are historical precedents which suggest the hype might be justified. The 1994 World Cup in the United States remains the best-attended World Cup in history, with an average of 68,600 fans flocking to each game.

Yet while organisers eagerly anticipate a commercial success, with one FIFA estimate suggesting it could generate a mammoth $11-billion in revenues, questions over other aspects of the tournament remain.

The 48 teams -- up from 32 in 2022 -- will be spread into 12 groups of four, with the top two teams in each group advancing to the knockout rounds, and the eight best third-placed teams joining them to make up a last 32.That expansion is likely to reduce the sense of jeopardy in the first round, a problem seen in other major championships which have increased in size in recent years. Honda to Pour $15 Billion into EV Factory in Ontario–the Largest Auto Investment in Canada's History

Ontario Premier Doug Ford, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland listen as Toshihiro Mibe, President and CEO of Honda Motor Co., speaks to the crowd at Honda of Canada – released by Honda.

In late April, Honda Motor Company announced plans to build a comprehensive electric vehicle (EV) value chain in Canada with an approximate investment of CAD$15 billion (USD$11 billion).

Consisting of four manufacturing plants for EVs, EV batteries, and battery components the first will have a production capacity of 240,000 EVs per year when fully operational, while the battery plant will produce around 36 gigawatt-hours per year.

Battery recycling and end-of-use concepts are being taken into account in the project.

Currently in evaluation phasing, the company hopes to build in Alliston, Ontario. In addition to securing the current employment level of 4,200 associates at its two existing manufacturing facilities in Ontario, Honda estimates it will add a minimum of 1,000 new jobs for the EV and EV battery manufacturing facilities.

The investment will also create significant spinoff jobs across all sites, including in the construction sector where it’s estimated that at least 4,000 tradesmen and laborers will be involved.

Honda has begun the process of evaluating the scope of its investment and completing negotiations with its joint venture partners, which includes the Federal Government of Canada who are supporting the work with CAD$5 billion. The work is expected to be finalized during the next six months.

Canadian and Ontario labor unions are scrutinizing the announcement for signs that Honda may employ foreign labor for the construction, when, they say, it should all be going to Canadians due to the presence of public money in the investment.

Honda Motor Company, Honda of Canada, and the Canadian Industry Minister, Francois-Philippe Champagne, have all said this will not be the case, with the Honda of Canada President going as far as to suggest a memorandum of understanding be signed on the topic of foreign workers versus unionized workers for the project.

Despite a recent slowdown in the growth of EV sales, especially in the U.S., Honda, the price of which reached a new 52-week high in March, said it was sticking to its goal of selling only EVs and fuel-cell, or hydrogen, vehicles globally by 2040.

Honda of Canada recently fabricated its 10 millionth car—a gasoline-powered CRV.

As the first step in achieving this electrification goal in North America, Honda positioned its existing auto production plants in the state of Ohio in the US as its EV hub for production, including the retooling of existing plants, an investment of USD$700 million, and the construction of a joint venture EV battery plant with LG Energy Solution, with an expected investment of USD$4.4 billion, the company said in a statement. Honda is the only auto manufacturer outside China that reveals its near neighbor for full supply chain EV production.Honda to Pour $15 Billion into EV Factory in Ontario–the Largest Auto Investment in Canada's History

Canada Agrees 200 Islands Belong to the Indigenous Haida Nation

Islands in the Haida Gwaii – CC 2.0. Province of BC

In a historic “first-of-its-kind” agreement the government of British Colombia has acknowledged the aboriginal ownership of 200 islands off the west coast of Canada.

The owners are the Haida nation, and rather than the Canadian government giving something to a First Nation, the agreement admits that the “Xhaaidlagha Gwaayaai” or the “islands at the end of world,” always belonged to them, a subtle yet powerful difference in the wording of First Nations negotiating.

BC Premier David Eby called the treaty “long overdue” and once signed, will clear the way for half a million hectares (1.3 million acres) of land to be managed by the Haida.

Postal service, shipping lanes, school and community services, private property rights, and local government jurisdiction, will all be unaffected by the agreement, which will essentially outline that the Haida decide what to do with the 200 or so islands and islets.

“We could be facing each other in a courtroom, we could have been fighting each other for years and years, but we chose a different path,” said Minister of Indigenous Relations of BC, Murray Rankin at the signing ceremony, who added that it took creativity and courage to “create a better world for our children.”

Indeed, making the agreement outside the courts of the formal treaty process reflects a vastly different way of negotiating than has been the norm for Canada.

“This agreement won’t only raise all boats here on Haida Gwaii – increase opportunity and prosperity for the Haida people and for the whole community and for the whole province – but it will also be an example and another way for nations – not just in British Columbia, but right across Canada – to have their title recognized,” said Eby.In other words, by deciding this outside court, Eby and the province of BC hope to set a new standard for how such land title agreements are struck. Canada Agrees 200 Islands Belong to the Indigenous Haida Nation

Canada approves Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine

Canada’s health regulator has approved the Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine on Wednesday and said it hopes to start giving the shots next week.

The vaccine made by US drugmaker Pfizer and Germany’s BioNTech vaccine already has been authorized for use by the United Kingdom and Bahrain, and officials have said they expect the US authorization within days. On Tuesday, the UK became the first country in the world to roll it out.

Calling the authorisation a "milestone" in the country's fight against coronavirus, the health Canada said the vaccine met its "stringent safety, efficacy and quality requirements".

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Canada is set to receive up to 249,000 doses of the vaccine this month.

In total, the Canadian government has purchased 20 million doses of the vaccine - enough to inoculate 10 million people - with the option to buy 56 million more. US regulators have confirmed the vaccine is 95% effective, paving the way for it to be approved for emergency use there. Advisers to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are set to meet on Thursday to formally review whether the US should authorise its use. https://www.daily-bangladesh.com

Canadian PM Trudeau in isolation as wife tests COVID-19 positive

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has been advised to be in isolation for two weeks after his wife, Sophie Gregoire Trudeau, tested positive for coronavirus on Thursday, as the spreading pandemic prompted the province of Ontario to shutter schools and limit public gatherings. Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, wife of Canadian PM Justin Trudeau, has tested positive for coronavirus after returning from a trip to London, a statement from the PM's office said. "She will remain in isolation for the time being. She is feeling well, is taking all the recommended precautions and her symptoms remain mild," it read. The couple is now self-isolating. Trudeau is in good health and has no symptoms, according to his office, but will remain in isolation for 14 days. There are no plans at present for Trudeau to be tested for coronavirus. "The prime minister will continue to fully assume his duties and will address Canadians tomorrow [Friday]," his office said. Sophie Gregoire Trudeau recently returned from London and experienced flu-like symptoms, so she was tested for the coronavirus, the prime minister’s office said earlier on Thursday. The test came back positive, it said in the evening. In a personal note, Sophie said she was “experiencing uncomfortable symptoms of the virus,” adding that she “will be back on my feet soon”. Canada reported 145 new case of the virus so far, with one death. Seven of Canada’s 10 provinces have recorded infections. Ontario, the most populous province, reported 17 new cases overnight. Authorities have ordered all schools to close from Saturday to 5 April. The virus has affected more than 127,000 people globally, taking a toll of more than 4,000, most of which in China, fllowed by Italy where 1,000 have dies and Iran.Source: https://www.domain-b.com/

Canada, USA build critical minerals cooperation : Uranium & Fuel

Canada and the USA last week reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening supply chains for critical minerals including uranium in their first working group meetings since finalising a bilateral collaboration agreement earlier this year. (Image: Tanya Rozhnovskaya/Adobe Stock)

Shawn Tupper, associate deputy minister for Natural Resources Canada, and Cynthia Kierscht, US deputy assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the supply chain for materials deemed essential to both countries' security and economic growth at the Second Bi-lateral Critical Minerals Working Group meeting, which was held by videoconference.

The two countries discussed the effects of the COVID-19 global pandemic on the mining sector and explored opportunities to collaborate on securing access to the critical minerals needed for key manufacturing sectors such as communication technology, aerospace, defence and clean technology, Canadian Minister of Natural Resources Seamus O'Regan said after the meeting.

"Both of our economies are better off when we work together. By advancing this Joint Action Plan, we are joining forces to secure access to the critical minerals - including uranium, rare earth elements and those needed for next generation batteries - that can play a key role in our economic recovery post COVID-19," O'Regan said. "These efforts will not only boost our competiveness in global markets and create jobs for Canadians; they will also help to develop cleaner technologies to reach our net-zero targets."

The bilateral efforts build on an agreement made in June 2019 by the countries' leaders to develop reliable, integrated North American supply chains for critical minerals. The first meeting of the working group was held in Washington DC in October, and the Canada-US Joint Action Plan on Critical Minerals Collaboration was finalised in January of this year. Source: https://www.world-nuclear-news.org:

Canada’s Bank of Nova Scotia Under-fire for Manipulating Gold Prices

Canada’s Bank of Nova Scotia Under-fire for Manipulating Gold Prices
$BKSHF, $DB, $HBSC, $UBS, $GLD, $SLV

By Paul Ebeling : Canada’s Bank of Nova Scotia(OTCMKT:BKSHF) 1 of the 5 big banks said to have manipulated the Gold market, which is worth trillions of dollars in trading value per year, will have to turn over internal e-Mails and other correspondence spanning several years.

Daniel Brockett, the New York lawyer who is spearheading the US lawsuit, said that the banks will also have to produce all relevant chat room instant messages and any other written communication they exchanged, whatever the media.

The move comes as a US judge said last week that gold investors could go ahead with their lawsuit accusing four major banks of conspiring for a decade to fix prices and exploit distortions at the expense of investors in global markets for the precious Yellow metal.

Involved banks will also have to produce all relevant chat room instant messages and any other written communication they exchanged, whatever the media.

US District Court for the Southern District of New York Valerie Caproni reduced the class period to 6 years ending in Y 2012, and dismissed a claim of unjust enrichment.

Investors allege the banks conspired from Ys 2004 to 2013 to fix prices for Gold. They did not estimate the size of the banks’ bullion portfolios, but said the Gold derivatives market alone was as large as $650-B during the class period.

Deutsche Bank AG (NYSE:DB) settled related claims in April, and the investors are said to seek preliminary approval of such settlement.

The Bank of Nova Scotia, known as Scotiabank, is also facing another lawsuit in the Manhattan court in which investors have accused it of conspiring with Deutsche Bank, HSBC (NYSE:HBSC) and UBS (NYSE:UBS) to rig Silver prices through a daily meeting known as the Silver Fix.

UBS did not set the benchmarks, but was accused of conspiring to exploit the Silver Fix. The bank has previously disclosed that it launched an internal probe of its precious metals business in addition to its Forex investigation.

In Y 2014 and after 117 years of being set between banks, the daily price setting process for global Silver prices moved to an electronic platform run by GME Group and Thomson Reuters in London.

This is What '90s Singer Brian Adams Would do to an Opel Adam

Opel tells us that Canadian-born singer/songwriter Brian Adams whose career certainly peaked way before he had to fly to Kathmandu, Nepal to get kudos, is also a respected photographer, it seems. Undoubtedly an interesting fact in and of itself, but what’s more eye-catching is that now he’s also entered a creative partnership with them that has thus far resulted in this customized Adam city car, shot artistically from multiple angles. The lovely set of photos can be found after the virtual jump, which you can cross by scrolling down. Once you do, you’ll see that the mini-MINI-DS3 (attempt) proudly wearing camouflage and its country’s colors to reinforce its image, and at one point even has the nice model in suitably skintight clothing stand in front of it and cover most of it up. Granted, even then, the lively livery shows through... Mr. Adams went to all the trouble to make the Adam look cool for a calendar that will be on display at an event planned for early next year at the Haus der Kunst museum, located in Munich. There, it will have a light shone on it for three days between January 23 and 26, by which time, they will have realized that a car won’t sell well in a sustained manner unless it has substance and identity; a big turbo might fix that, though. No amount of silly marketing glitter will make it fly out of showrooms faster (aside from the aforementioned means of forced induction, of course). By Andrei Nedelea, Source: Article

Canadian Government Plans to Offload 10 Percent Stake in GM "As Quickly As Feasible"

A recently posted Bloomberg report says that the Canadian government has made its intentions clear regarding its continued involvement withGeneral Motors. It is now looking for interested parties who would want buy its stake in the American automotive giant. They currently hold 140 million common shares, which equate to a 10 percent stake valued at $5.1 (€3.84) billion. This makes them the third-largest shareholder, yet apparently, they have already contacted investment banks and taken steps to cease the deal as quickly as possible. A spokeswoman for the country’s Finance Minister Jim Flaherty, Kathleen Perchaluk, recently stated via an email that "the government of Canada remains committed to exiting from ownership of GM as quickly as feasible, while maximizing the value of the government’s interests for Canadian taxpayers." At the other end of the line, GM did not seem particularly distressed by the news, commenting through one of its spokesmen, Tom Henderson, that “Like any shareholder, it is their decision on when to sell their shares in our company.” It seems that most of those involved want to shed their GM stake as quickly as possible, including the US Treasury and the UAW union’s GM retiree health-care trust, and the company seems more than happy to buy all of it backSource: Carscppp

New Pope – Italian, African or Canadian?

On February 28, Benedict XVI, who was the 265th Pope of Rome, resigned. This is the first case within several centuries that a Pope leaves his post while he is alive. Now, the world is trying to guess who will be the next Pope.
Theoretically, any Roman Catholic, if he is a man and is not married, may become the Pope of Rome. However, within the last several centuries, only cardinals were elected popes. Who will be the next pope? Candidates review (PHOTO), Voice of Russia presents a biography review of the candidates:
Peter Kodwo Appiah Turkson (born 11 October 1948) is a Ghanaian cardinal of the Catholic Church. He is the president of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace since his appointment by Pope Benedict XVI on 24 October 2009. He had served as Archbishop of Cape Coast. He was elevated to the cardinalate by Pope John Paul II in 2003, and is widely regarded as papabile. Immediately following the announcement on 11 February 2013 of the impending resignation of Pope Benedict XVI, at least two bookmakers, Paddy Power and Ladbrokes, made Turkson the favourite to be elected as the new pope, with Paddy Power giving 2/1 odds. Turkson has also been mentioned in regards to St. Malachy's apocalyptic list Prophecy of the Popes, given that its final Pope is named Peter. Odds of 4/1 are given.
Marc Ouellet, PSS (born June 8, 1944) is a Canadian Cardinal of the Catholic Church. He is the present prefect of the Congregation for Bishops and concurrently president of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America since his appointment by Pope Benedict XVI on 30 June 2010. Previously, he was archbishop of Quebec and primate of Canada. He was elevated to the cardinalate by Pope John Paul II, on 21 October 2003. He is the present prefect of the Congregation for Bishops and president of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America since his appointment by Pope Benedict XVI on 30 June 2010. He succeeded Giovanni Battista Re, who had reached the age limit.
Francis Arinze (born 1 November 1932) is an Igbo Nigerian Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church. He is Prefect Emeritus of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, having served as prefect from 2002 to 2008. He is the current Cardinal Bishop of Velletri-Segni (succeeding Joseph Ratzinger, who became Pope Benedict XVI) since 2005. Arinze was one of the principal advisors to Pope John Paul II, and was considered papabile before the2005 papal conclave, which elected Benedict XVI.
Tarcisio Pietro Evasio Bertone, S.D.B. (born 2 December 1934) is an Italian prelate and a Vatican diplomat. A cardinal of the Catholic Church, he currently serves as Cardinal Secretary of State and Camerlengo, having previously served as Archbishop of Vercelli from 1991 to 1995, as Secretary of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, when Cardinal Ratzinger, the future Pope Benedict XVI, was Prefect, and Archbishop of Genoa from 2002 to 2006. Bertone was elevated to the cardinalate in 2003. On 10 May 2008, he was named Cardinal-Bishop of Frascati. Besides his native Italian, Bertone speaks fluent French, Spanish, German and Portuguese. He has some knowledge of English, although he is not fluent, and he can read Polish, Latin, Greek and Hebrew.
Angelo Scola (born 7 November 1941) is an Italian Cardinal of the Catholic Church, philosopher and theologian. He was appointed Archbishop of Milan by Pope Benedict XVI on 28 June 2011. He had served as Patriarch of Venice since 2002. He was elevated to the cardinalate in 2003. He is considered a contender to succeed Pope Benedict XVI, who has announced his resignation effective 28 February 2013
João Braz de Aviz (born 24 April 1947) is the current prefect of the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life since his appointment by Pope Benedict XVI on 4 January 2011. On 11 February 2013, Pope Benedict XVI announced that he will resign on 28 February 2013. Braz de Aviz is cited as one of the Papabili or potential popes. Voice of Russia, Wikipedia: At present, there are more than 200 cardinals in the entire Roman Catholic Church, and it is very hard to guess who of them will be elected the next pontiff. However, quite a few people find it very likely that the next Pope will be an Italian. Before the two last Popes, Pole John Paul II and German Benedict XVI, the papal throne had been occupied by Italians within many years, and now, Italian clergymen will probably try to revive this tradition, some people suppose. In an interview with the Voice of Russia, Executive Director of the Franciscan publishing house in Moscow Igor Baranov said: “It is very likely that the next Pope will be an Italian. The new Pope will be elected from a conclave of 117 cardinals. Out of them, 60 are Europeans, and out of these 60, the majority are Italians.” “One of the candidates who has good chances to win the elections is Angelo Scola, the 71-year-old archbishop of Milan,” Igor Baranov continues. “His Eminence Angelo has large experience in establishing public relations between the Church, on the one side, and politicians and journalists, on the other. Besides, Angelo Scola has initiated, and now heads, an organization that is trying to establish closer relations between Christians and Muslims. I believe that the decision to create such an organization was very timely.” The Voice of Russia has also interviewed Krzysztof Tomasik from the Polish Catholic Information Agency, and he said: “It is hard to predict with a 100% certainty who will be the next Pope. However, many of my colleague journalists say that if they had the right to vote, they would have voted for Milan’s Cardinal Angelo Scola. But there is also a big chance that the new Pope will be a non-European.” The next Pope may even be an African. There are two cardinals from Africa among the candidates, who, as experts say, have good chances to be elected - Francis Arinze from Nigeria and Peter Kodwo Appiah Turkson from Ghana. “Both Cardinal Arinze and Cardinal Turkson are very worthy people,” Igor Baranov says. “At present, the number of Roman Catholics in Africa is rapidly growing. Meanwhile, in Europe, the number of Catholics is decreasing, and in the US and Latin America, it is staying at the same level.” Another non-European who is often mentioned among the candidates with good chances to win is the 68-year-old Canadian Cardinal Marc Ouellet, who is the prefect of the Congregation for Bishops. His Eminence Marc has a reputation of a traditionalist. For example, he is radically against abortions. At the same time, Cardinal Ouellet believes that the old ban for Roman Catholic clergymen to be married should be abolished. Russian Orthodox priests, of course, have no right to vote for or against a new Pope of Rome or give any orders to Roman Catholics. However, they have the right to say whom they would prefer to see as the new head of the Roman Catholic Church. Archpriest Dmitry Sizonenko from the Russian Patriarch’s Office says: “There are many friends of Russia among the current candidates for the papal throne – for example, Italian Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi, who knows Russian culture and Russian Christian traditions very well and loves them. His Eminence Gianfranco has met several times with Metropolitan Illarion, who is responsible in the Russian Church for ties with other Christian denominations. If Gianfranco Ravasi becomes the Pope of Rome, this would be very beneficial for the relations between the Russian Church and the Roman Catholic Church.”Source: Voice of Russia

Coca-Cola issues new ads laying out its efforts in tackling the nation’s disease

Starting from Monday on the highest-rated shows on CNN, Fox News and MSNBC will be interrupted by Coca-Cola two-minute ads laying out the company’s record of providing drinks with fewer calories and noting that weight gain is the result of consuming too many calories – not just soda. In such a manner Coca-Cola, one of the world’s most powerful brands, has set to dismiss accusations that soft drinks are the primary culprits of obesity and promote the company’s efforts to fight the nation’s disease.
Amid general concerns over the nation, the youngest part of it in particular, gaining weight too fast – childhood obesity has more than tripled in the past 30 years – New York City has decided to enact a cap on the size of soft drinks sold at restaurants, movie theaters and sports arenas. The city’s pioneer move has inspired the mayor of Cambridge, Mass., to introduce a similar measure. For a long time Coca-Cola has been associated with the idea of happiness. But the Coca-Cola happiness, as it has turned out, is measured in kilograms. A decades-long study involving more than 33,000 Americans, for example, suggested that drinking sugary beverages interacts with genes that affect weight. Some new research has also suggested that sugary drinks cause people to gain kilograms independent of other behavior. With the new campaign to kick off next week Coca-Cola is set to weigh in the debate and points to the efforts the company performed over the past years to tackle the problem. "There's an important conversation going on about obesity out there, and we want to be a part of the conversation," Stuart Kronauge, general manager of sparkling beverages for Coca-Cola North America, said. One of the videos to be aired on US television will remind viewers that weight management is about calorie counting, including those that come from Coca-Cola beverages. The advert also recalls Coca-Cola’s commitment to deliver more beverage choices, including low- and no-calorie options, to the public. Besides, as the company noted, it already puts calorie counts on the front of its cans and bottles. It is noteworthy that Coca-Cola has been shaping its business for the past years based on the public concern over the high calorie content of its soft drinks. Nearly one-third of its sales in the US and Canada is diet soft drinks. Then come sports drinks and bottled water. It is the first time the company has gone on the offensive to tackle widespread criticism that sugary beverages are one of the biggest contributors to the obesity epidemic. The ads have been attacked before they were shown. “This is about confusing the public,” said Michele R. Simon, a public health lawyer who writes frequently about the food and beverage business and its role in public health issues. “They are downplaying the serious health effects of drinking too much soda and making it sound like balancing soda consumption with exercise is the only issue, when there are plenty of other reasons not to consume too much of these kinds of products.” Source: Voice of Russia

Q3 roundup of global retail leaders

In the third of this year's regular series of updates, IGD retail have rounded up the main developments at the leading global grocery retailers - Carrefour, Tesco, Metro and Walmart - since August. Divestment has been key feature for Carrefour: (1) In the fourth quarter Carrefour announced the sale of its business in Colombia to Cencosud, and of its Malaysian operations to Japanese retailer Aeon. Carrefour is clearly prioritising resource allocation to more mature markets where it holds a strong position, and emerging markets where it can harness growth potential (2) At the first half results presentation, when a 0.9% increase in net sales was reported, CEO Georges Plassat also outlined three areas of future focus: assets, merchandise and people (3) A survey by French trade magazine Linéaires revealed that Carrefour significantly lowered prices over the first half, closing the gap with price leader Leclerc and showing that in France, the group is well on the way to delivering EDLP. The price initiatives are beginning to kick in, and Q3 results indicated signs of improvement in French hypermarkets, especially in food sales (4) Carrefour has identified e-commerce as an area where it can accelerate in 2012. In line with this, it launched trials of virtual shopping walls at train stations in Lyon and Paris, during September and October, Tesco: improving UK performanceTesco: In China, Tesco closed four stores to concentrate on fewer regions and on key strategic areas. In South Korea, a sale and leaseback deal generated GBP300m which is likely to be invested back into the development of Tesco's business in the country. First half results revealed modest group sales growth and improving UK performance, alongside a fall in group trading profit, as the retailer invests in its plan to build a better Tesco. Performance from international operations was mixed, impacted by local economic conditions. Online has been a focus, both at home and internationally. Tesco is growing its network of dark stores in the UK, and plans to open two more over the next 18 months. In China, Tesco became the first supermarket retailer to launch a website offering recipe ideas, nutritional information and food education. Slovakia became the latest country to welcome online grocery shopping this year, following the launch of the service in the Czech Republic and Poland. Metro confident on positioning: Third quarter sales, reported last week, were up 2%, but EBIT was down 39%. European performance was mixed, with a sales fall of 2% in Germany, and divestments (Makro UK and Saturn France) impairing growth in western Europe. In Asia/Africa, sales were up 32.2% (+19% in local currency). Despite the difficulties and the uncertain economic outlook, Metro CEO Olaf Koch is confident that the group is on the right track with the strategic measures taken so far. The group continues to expect a rise in sales for the full year. In central and eastern Europe, Metro is to continue expanding the Real hypermarket business in Ukraine, while there have been rumours that it is considering the sale of operations in Russia. Metro revealed a new management structure at Real, as it attempts to realign the business and improve its profitability. Further east, more cash & carry outlets are expected to open in India by the end of the year, taking the total to 15. Metro sees potential for more than 100 Indian stores in the long term. Walmart's multichannel developments continue: At the annual analysts' meeting in October, Walmart outlined its plans for growth. These include accelerating small format store growth in the US, investing in price and e-commerce. Multichannel developments have continued apace. The launch of an advanced search engine for Walmart.com, tests of a self-scanning app and same-day delivery for online, and this week's collaboration between Mattel and Walmart Canada all reinforce the importance of e-commerce, in which CEO Mike Duke has said "we will play to win." Second quarter results, at the end of August, indicated ongoing momentum at home, with four successive quarters of positive comparable sales growth delivered in the core US stores. Although international growth slowed, these operations continue to be Walmart's main growth engine. Source: Fresh-Plaza

Harley Davidson unveils tsunami motorcycle

Today the Harley-Davidson Museum unveils a special display featuring Ikuo Yokoyama’s Harley-Davidson motorcycle that drifted for more than a year across the Pacific Ocean following the tragic tsunami that devastated parts of northern Japan last year. The 2004 Harley-Davidson FXSTB Softail Night Train, recovered off the coast of British Columbia by Peter Mark, is being displayed at Yokoyama’s request. He asked to have the motorcycle preserved in its current condition and displayed at the Harley-Davidson Museum as a memorial to those whose lives were lost or forever changed by the 2011 tsunami in Japan. “We’re truly humbled to display Mr. Yokoyama’s motorcycle,” said Bill Davidson, Vice President of the Harley-Davidson Museum. “This motorcycle has an amazing story to tell, and we are honored to be able to share it.” The remarkable story of the motorcycle’s survival and recovery made international headlines after Mark found it washed ashore on a remote beach on British Columbia’s Graham Island at low tide. He discovered the motorcycle, still bearing its Japanese license plate, in a container where the bike was being stored by Yokoyama. Working with news agencies and representatives from Deeley Harley-Davidson Canada and Harley-Davidson Japan, contact was made with Yokoyama, who lost his home and currently lives in temporary housing in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. Still struggling to rebuild his life in the aftermath of the disaster, Yokoyama declined Harley-Davidson’s offer to return the bike to him, although he was grateful for the offer and touched by the outpouring of support from Harley riders around the world. The Harley-Davidson Museum is open daily from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m., with the exception of Thursday, when it is open until 8 p.m. The Harley-Davidson Museum The Harley-Davidson Museum is located at 400 West Canal Street in Milwaukee in the USA and provides a glimpse of history and culture as you’ve never seen it before – through the lens of Harley-Davidson Motor Company. BRIC countries to drive DTT receivers market

A map highlighting the BRICS countries
BRICS is an international political organisation of leading emerging economies, arising out of the inclusion of South Africa into the BRIC: Image Link Wikimedia
The global active base for Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) Receivers is projected to reach 2.4 billion units by 2018, driven by TV digitisation in BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India, and China) countries, according to GIA research. Future growth in the demand for DTT Receivers will also be driven by the widespread adoption of digital TV standards across various consumer electronic devices. Many Western European countries such as Denmark, France, Germany, Norway, Sweden, and Spain have already become fully digitalised by successfully completing DSO. Other major markets such as Italy, UK, Japan, Canada, Portugal, and South Korea are poised to complete ASO in 2012. By the year 2015 some of the most populated countries in the world such as China, India, Mexico, Romania, Russia, and the US aim to completely switch over to digital format in all forms of broadcasting. GIA suggests the fortune of the global market for DTT receivers is poised to chart a growing pattern on the demand graph in future, primarily driven by the widespread popularity of free terrestrial television. In fact, free terrestrial TV continues to find favor among a large number of consumers, especially in developed nations, in spite of the growth in the adoption of pay TV in recent times. The affordability of free terrestrial TV is the major factor responsible for this trend, as consumers are only required to pay a single upfront amount for the receiver with no additional subscription costs. Additionally, with terrestrial digitalisation garnering widespread popularity on a global scale, emerging countries such as China, South Africa and Brazil are projected to witness a surge in demand for DTT receivers in future. China alone is projected to account for a substantial amount of users in the coming years. GIA points out that the DTT Receivers market is being driven by the digitisation of television across the globe. Television continues to strengthen its position in the global media market by cornering a greater share of viewer attention and revenues, despite the growing competition from alternate media channels. The potential for growth is immense given the fact that about 50 per cent of the world’s population is yet to be touched by the television boom. Emerging markets, particularly India and China, offer enormous growth prospects. Over the years, Multiple Systems Operators (MSOs) have been making enormous investments for delivering and supporting enhanced video, voice and data services such as VoD and HD digital video. MSOs have been offering bundled broadband service packages in order to gain an edge over providers of digital broadcast satellite services and telecom companies. The need to compete effectively is essential given the fact that content providers are offering increasingly personalised content through the Internet and to multiple user devices. This led MSOs to upgrade their networks by using Networked (PVRs) which allow them to shift video storage to the networks from the set top boxes thereby adding more capacity. MSOs are also placing increased emphasis on offering time-shifted television to consumers. These efforts have led to numerous technological advancements, which have proven beneficial for the global television industry. A case in point is online TV content and Digital Video Recorders (DVRs) that have played a critical role in boosting overall viewership. The US and Europe account for nearly two-thirds of the global active base for DTT Receivers. However, with these markets nearing saturation, emerging markets such as China, India, Russia, and Brazil are expected to drive the market for DTT Receivers in future as these countries embark on digitisation of TV. Source: Advanced Television

Woodland: Sprucing up production processes

Registering a consistent growth rate of 25-30 per cent, Woodland from the Aero Group thrives to chart further growth by bringing in innovations in its product range. “Technology remains the core area at Woodland and we have tied up with a German company Desma to ensure high quality products. Footwear manufacturing has always been labor-intensive, involving cutting of leather, stitching, sewing and so on; more manpower means more mistakes. To avoid these mistakes, Woodland, in collaboration with Desma would now introduce robots in the manufacturing process. The new technology will reduce manpower by one-third,” explains Harkirat Singh, Managing Director, Aero Club. That’s not all, the brand is also planning to change over its entire range of shoes and apparel to quality eco-friendly products in the future. Woodland currently has over 350 company owned exclusive stores across various Indian cities and the brand also has a presence in 4,000 plus multi-brand outlets in a number of countries. “We plan to add another 60 stores in this fiscal,” Singh adds. Elaborating on the product offering, Singh says, “As Woodland is a global adventure brand we focus on the youth. Our brand’s philosophy perfectly matches our target audience and we constantly work towards delivering them the best of products. Apart from being a youth focused brand Woodland offers formal footwear through its sub-brand Woods. This collection pays attention to detail and fine craftsmanship. Woods is available at all Woodland exclusive stores though it also has its stand-alone stores.” Owned by ‘Aero Group’, the brand, ‘Woodland’ originated in Quebec, Canada. Initially it started off by making winter boots and later ventured into India in 1992. “When we entered India, the footwear market was largely unorganized. Woodland created a new category of specialized ‘outdoor adventure sports’ shoes. Our positioning was different and we were known as a rugged, outdoor leather shoe brand, the kind usually preferred by adventurists. The youth took a fancy to our shoes. That was in the beginning and we gradually developed a product line especially for India,” Singh explains. Woodland is already present in the international markets and currently has operations across the globe including countries like Mauritius, Nepal, Bangladesh, Singapore, Middle East and Far East. It recently launched an E-store and online sales have surged by over 20 per cent on a month-on-month basis in the last four months. For the online portal, Woodland plans to stock up limited edition products exclusively for online buyers, the ones that are commercially not viable for mass production, on sale. Talking about the eco-friendly approach adopted by the company, Singh says, “We have always been an outdoor brand and very much in tune with nature. Whatever we do, it will never be against the environment but rather in consonance with it. It’s this connect that has been the soul of the brand. We not only build this association through our promotions, but also through our processes and practices. Woodland plans to leverage this association more strongly to further strengthen the brand by changing over its entire range of shoes and apparel to quality eco-friendly products — made with materials and chemicals that don’t harm the nature.”Source: Fashion United

Do U Speak Green: Eco-friendly apparel line spreads wings

It aims to capture both the domestic and overseas markets with its eco-friendly products perfectly called as Do U Speak Green. And with its strategies in place, the brand witnessed 100 per cent growth last year. Talking about it, Shishir Goenka, Director, Fusion Clothing Company (Do U Speak Green) says, “We launched ‘Do U Speak Green’, seeing the absence of smart looking clothing for the nature lovers and also the absence of organic clothing in India.” But most importantly, Goenka has a passion for wildlife and environment preservation, hence, the decision to contribute 10 per cent of sales for the environment. “We have been selected by ET Now for their ‘Pioneering Spirit’ TV program, also we are India’s 1st organic brand to sell under our own brand-name in Europe. Our brand is registered as a trademark in the US, Canada, EU and India.” Perhaps what does the trick is the name which asks people on their commitment for the environment and their willingness to get involve. As Goenka says “When someone buys our product, not only do they sport clothes, which do not contain harmful chemicals, but are also contributing to the environment in three ways. They are encouraging the growth of organic cotton, which helps keep the land free of harmful chemicals and fertilizers; the amount is directly contributed by our company to WWF-India which can help them undertake more conservation activities; and last but not the least, they are indirectly helping farmers in higher realizations of money and keeping them healthy and debt free.” In fact, the company has put up a video on their web-store – douspeakgreen.in, showing how the cultivation of conventional cotton is killing farmers. They do not have protection from pesticides and the soil and environment is damaged. The brand offers styles for men, women, kids and newborns. It uses organic cotton and bamboo cotton fabrics with eco friendly dyes and water based prints. The brand has also roped in designer Satya Paul to create a special collection for WWF-India. And their association with ACK Media is to create T-shirts with characters from their Amar Chitra Katha and Tinkle comics. It has also formed an association with Shop for Change to extend its product offerings. Commenting on the retail front, Goenka says, “We are selling through 26 MBOs and resorts and already have a distributor in Sweden and an agent in the UK. We also sell through our web-store douspeakgreen.in as well as other e-commerce sites like Homeshop 18 and Craftsvilla.Do U Speak Green: Eco-friendly apparel line spreads wings - Fashion - news - Fashion News India, jobs, network, apparel, business
