Ireland Shuts Last Coal Plant, Becomes 15th Coal-Free Country in Europe

Ireland will become the fifteenth European nation without coal in its energy mix following a recent announcement.

The ESB Moneypoint power station was built in the 1980s to help alleviate the effects of the oil shock, and remains today in County Claire as the last coal-capable asset in the country.

It will be converted to burn emergency oil reserves following a surge in renewable energy production.

Even that is planned to cease in 2029, but starting from June this year, Moneypoint will no longer be present in the wholesale electricity market.

11 terawatt-hours of electricity was generated by wind turbines last year, and made up 37% of Ireland’s total energy generation, reports Ember, a renewables-focused think tank.

“Ireland has quietly rewritten its energy story, replacing toxic coal with homegrown renewable power,” said Alexandru Mustață, campaigner on coal and gas at Europe’s Beyond Fossil Fuels.

“But this isn’t ‘job done’. The government’s priority now must be building a power system for a renewable future; one with the storage, flexibility, and grid infrastructure needed to run fully on clean, domestic renewable electricity,” Mustață warned.

According to Beyond Fossil Fuels, Ireland joins Belgium, Sweden, Austria, Portugal, and the UK, who have already stopped using coal, accompanied by Spain and Slovakia who are also completing their coal phase-outs this year.

Cyprus, Lithuania, Latvia, Switzerland, Estonia, Norway, Malta, Albania, and Luxembourg never burned coal at the grid level. This leaves Serbia, Montenegro, Poland, Germany, France, Italy, Slovenia, Bosnia Herzegovina, North Macedonia, Finland, Hungary, Bulgaria, Czechia, Romania, Croatia, Greece, Denmark and the Netherlands who rely on coal to some degree. Some of these have existing commitments to abandon coal like Germany and Romania, and others, like Poland and Serbia, who don’t. Italy, France, Greece, Finland, Denmark, Hungary and the Netherlands will reach their commitments in the next 5 years. Ireland Shuts Last Coal Plant, Becomes 15th Coal-Free Country in Europe

Kylian Mbappe wins European Golden Boot

Kylian Mbappe has won the 2024/25 European Golden Boot thanks to his 31-goal haul in La Liga, leading the way with 62 points, Football Today reports.

Mbappe scored eight fewer league goals than Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyokeres, who was, however, handicapped by having his goals multiplied by a coefficient of 1.5 as opposed to Mbappe’s 2.

The 26-year-old netted a double in Real Madrid’s final game of the season on Saturday against Real Sociedad to take the lead in the Golden Boot race.

Nonetheless, he would have been looking anxiously over his shoulders earlier today with Mohamed Salah in action against Crystal Palace.

Salah needed three goals to share the award with Mbappe and four to win it outrightly, but could only find the back of the net once in Liverpool’s 1-1 draw.

A whopping six goals behind at kick-off, Robert Lewandowski was the last of Mbappe’s competitors to take to the field on Sunday and scored twice inside the opening 17 minutes to give himself a glimmer of hope.

However, the Poland international missed several opportunities to add to his tally and had been substituted off by the time Barcelona got a late penalty, which Dani Olmo converted.

Lewandowski ended the season on 27 league goals, four behind Mbappe, confirming the Frenchman’s status as winner of the European Golden Boot award.

Mbappe is the first player in football history to win the Champions League, World Cup and European Golden Boot awards, further cementing his status as one of the world’s best players.

While the season ended relatively well for Mbappe on a personal level, he would have liked more collective glory to go along with it, as Madrid could only manage to win the European Super Cup and the FIFA Intercontinental Cup.Under the tutelage of newly appointed manager Xabi Alonso, Los Blancos will be looking to go all the way in June’s Club World Cup tournament. Polish ministry approves plans for Rolls-Royce SMRs

How a Rolls-Royce SMR might look (Image: Rolls-Royce SMR)

Polish industrial group Industria's plan to construct a power plant based on Rolls-Royce's small modular reactor (SMR) has been approved by the Ministry of Climate and Environment.

Industria submitted its application for a decision-in-principle in December last year to Polish Climate and Environment Minister Paulina Hennig-Kloska. The application concerns the construction of a nuclear power plant using Rolls-Royce SMR technology - a 470 MWe design based on a small pressurised water reactor - and a used nuclear fuel storage facility as an integral part of the power plant.

On 10 May, Hennig-Kloska issued the ministry's decision-in-principle, saying that she believes the investment would be in the public interest and in line with Poland's energy and climate policies. The application was positively assessed by the Head of the Internal Security Agency and the Minister of State Assets.

The decision-in-principle represents official state approval for the planned investment in accordance with the assumptions and concept presented by the company. It is the first decision in the process of administrative permits for investments in nuclear power facilities in Poland that an investor may apply for. Obtaining it entitles Industria to apply for a number of further administrative arrangements, such as a siting decision or construction licence.

"Today's decision-in-principle by Poland's Environment Minister is extremely positive news and allows us to advance our commercial and technical discussions on the deployment of Rolls-Royce SMR power plants in Poland," said Rolls-Royce SMR's Director of Strategy and Business Development Alan Woods. "Poland is one of a number of key export opportunities for Rolls-Royce SMR as we look to build on our progress in the UK and exploit the important competitive advantage our SMR design has over its competitors."

Last year, state-owned Industria - part of Industrial Development Agency JSC (IDA) - selected Rolls-Royce SMR technology to fulfil the zero-emission energy goals of the Central Hydrogen Cluster in Poland and as part of their plans to produce 50,000 tonnes of low-carbon hydrogen every year.

In July 2023, Industria signed a letter of intent with the Kostrzyn-Słubicka Special Economic Zone SA (KSSSE) regarding cooperation on the location of a modular power plant based on Rolls-Royce SMR technology in the areas covered by the KSSSE.

Poland's Ministry of Climate and Environment issued a decision-in-principle in July last year on copper and silver producer KGHM Polska Miedź SA's plan to construct a NuScale VOYGR modular nuclear power plant with a capacity of 462 MWe consisting of six modules, each with a capacity of 77 MWe.

In December, the ministry issued decisions-in-principle to Orlen Synthos Green Energy for the construction of power plants based on GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy's BWRX-300 SMR at six locations. A total of 24 BWRX-300 reactors are planned at the sites.

The ministry has also issued decisions-in-principle for the construction of two large nuclear power plants: one for a 3750 MWe plant in Pomerania using Westinghouse's AP1000 technology, the other for a plant comprising two South Korean-supplied APR1400 reactors in the Patnów-Konin region.Researched and written by World Nuclear News. Polish ministry approves plans for Rolls-Royce SMRs : New Nuclear - World Nuclear News

Europe risks losses of $215 billion by stopping Russian gas imports

Europe will have to spend up to $215 billion through investments if it decides to stop buying Russian natural gas, US-based financial research company Sanford C. Bernstein & Co said Wednesday. "Europe needs natural gas demand to go down by 15 billion cubic meters to be able to stop purchasing Russian gas. It will also have to spend around $40 billion dollars on more expensive alternatives energy sources," the company said in a statement.
Stopping supplies of Russia gas will lead to a situation whereby "every European will have to take a cold shower once a month, CO2 emissions will increase by 300 million tons per year, tax incentives for Norwegian gas production will amount to $12 billion dollars, the power of nuclear energy in Europe will increase 5 percent, and most of the businesses that consume significant amounts of gas will be closed," the company said. "We considered various scenarios of Europe refusing Russian gas supplies but none of them seem attractive," the company said. "Our conclusion is that 'the cure is worse than the illness's and that Europeans discontent with its dependency on Russian gas will not last long," Bernstein experts think. It will take five years to implement measures to make up for such a gas shortfall, Bernstein estimated, and more than 10,000 jobs would be eliminated in the process. Source: Voice Of Russia

Switzerland: a suicide magnet

To describe Switzerland as a Mecca for suicide tourism is hyperbole, but suicide facilities would draw as many people as yodelling and cowbells. The Australian euthanasia activist, Dr Philip Nitschke, is even engaging a travel agent to buy one-way tickets to Zurich for members of his organisation, Exit International. The agency would also handle all the paperwork required by the assisted suicide clinic run by Dignitas. "They need medical records to explain how sick they are, proof of residence, passports and certified extracts of birth certificates," Dr Nitschke told News.com.au. "People who are that ill, if they are thinking of making this journey, it's a lot of work and almost impossible for them. They also need supportive letters from family members." The service will cost about A$1000. It also emerged this week that an unnamed 83-year-old man became the first Briton to end his life at Dignitas because he was in the early stage of dementia. A leading campaigner for assisted suicide in the UK, Michael Irwin, helped get a psychiatric evaluation earlier this year for him. He told The Independent that “He was a sensible, professional person in the early stages of dementia and knew what dementia will involve. The family are very pleased that it all happened the way he wanted it, with dignity.” Mr Irwin is a well-known figure in the UK who has helped a number of people to die. Although he has never been arrested, in 2005 he was struck off the medical register for serious professional misconduct after he helped a fellow euthanasia campaigner to commit suicide. According to the London Times he foresees that there will be many more visitors to Dignitas as the number of people with dementia rises. Source: Article

Europe Day: any reasons to celebrate?

день европы страсбург евросоюз флаг
This year’s Europe Day, the holiday of peace and unity across the EU, will be somewhat dimmed as Brussels-declared European unity is not that obvious anymore. Ideas behind the European Union were put forward in 1950 by the French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman whose Declaration of May 9, proposed to pool French and German coal and steel industries together, thus leading to the creation of the European Coal and Steel Community, the prototype of the EU. The 1985 Milan summit decided to celebrate May 9 as the EU's flag day and the European Parliament formally recognized 9 May as Europe Day in 2008. The new European dates and symbols, including the flag, were to be formalized in a new EU Constitution but not all EU countries had the same view on unity. In 2005, France and the Netherlands said no to the EU Constitution backed by a number of member-states that also doubted its necessity. Two years later, the EU adopted a kind of replacement - the Lisbon Treaty, but the EU symbols remained to be used de-facto not de-jure. Then, the Maastricht Treaty entered into force in 1993 and cemented the creation of the European Union. Back then, things seemed so romantic, promising and harmonious, says Vladimir Bruter, expert with the Institute for Humanitarian and Political Research. "It’s always nice to celebrate something when you feel like it but today Europeans don’t have that many reasons to party so Europe Day celebrations will be rather humble. If we regard European unity as an ideological and philosophical value then this day should be marked. If it is a mere formality then why celebrating? Unfortunately, I think European unity is more of a formality today." "Meanwhile, practically all EU member-states will mark the day, except for the major euro-skeptic - the UK. Festivities will be held even despite the crisis and recession, says Mikhail Nosov, Deputy Head of the Institute of European Studies RAS." Things are not that bad – at least people have a united Europe whose membership is still sought. You know, some holidays are marked with tears in ones eyes which doesn’t mean they are not holidays. However, the senior EU members are seeing growing separatism trends, especially among economically-developed national autonomies like Spain’s Catalonia, Scotland or Italy’s northern provinces. At the same time, EU freshmen keep wrangling over territories or rejecting Brussels’ economic diktat, like, for example, Hungary while the “old” EU doesn’t rush to change its patronizing attitude to newcoming members. Therefore, it’s a big question what people across the EU are celebrating on Europe Day this year. Nikita SorokinSource: The Voice Of Russia

Football is more than a game

According to the International Federation of Football Associations, FIFA, the beautiful game of football is played by more than 250 million people in the world and almost 2 million clubs are registered officially. Today, December 10 is World Football Day. According to the International Federation of Football Associations, FIFA, the beautiful game of football is played by more than 250 million people in the world and almost 2 million clubs are registered officially. The fact that a majority of UN members are members of FIFA is evidence that football is indeed a global phenomenon. Perhaps the ancient Chinese, the Egyptians and the ancient Romans, believed to be the originators of football, or indeed the Englishmen who set down the rules of football in the middle of the 19th century probably couldn’t have thought that the game will one day become a global event. Today, television coverage of football matches is watched by several millions of lovers, and international football tournaments earn huge sums of money for the organizers.. Leading footballers earn millions of dollars, prompting millions of children in the world to dream about emulating the frontline players. Much has been written about the game of football, and writers of articles have been trying to find out the secret of the spherical object , which attracts people like a magnet. Football has long transcended just a form of sport, says Nikita Simonyan, a former legendary footballer and author of the book “Football-only a game?”. Football is both politics and art, and possibly the interaction of the peoples of the world, who are seeking to make friends. Perhaps that is why there is such uncompromising competition over the right to host World football championships, said Simonyan. Football has become a national ideology. When the Russian national team played well at the European competition, millions of people took to the streets to celebrate; they were proud to be Russians. No other sport has the power to unite people like the game of football, Simonyan says. Russia is hosting the 2018 World football championships; 16 new stadiums are to be constructed in 13 cities where matches are to be played. The championships will give a boost to the development of football in Russia, said Simonyan. “I look with optimism at the future of football in Russia”, he says. After getting the right to stage the World competition in 2018, we must train a new generation of players , and a new national team should now be selected, advises Simonyan. The coaches of the youth team should take note. They should look for latent talent players, who are morally strong and ready to defend the dignity and honour of the country, says Simonyan. Chiefs of the Russian Football Union have put before the players an ambitious task of winning the gold medal in 2018 on home soil. Source; Voice of Russia

Time puts Pussy Riot on candidates' list for 2012 Person of the Year, public does not agree

Pussy Riot панк-группа
Members of the Pussy Riot punk band were announced candidates for Time Magazine’s 2012 Person of the Year. The women can find their names next to US President Barack Obama, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad, Egyptian President Mohamed Morsy, and Olympic champion Michael Phelps. “In a year when so many voices of liberty and dissent have suffered harsh retribution, the Russian feminist punk group Pussy Riot has paid a particularly steep price for provocative political expression,” the magazine wrote about the nominee. Two of the members were given two years in jail for a February 2012 performance in Moscow’s main cathedral denouncing the Russian Orthodox Church’s support of President Vladimir Putin, the magazine reminds. At the same time a poll shows that 70 percent of people do not share Time’s decision and think the notorious punk band members do not deserve the award. Among the 38 candidates one can find inanimate objects, the Higgs Boson, for instance. “It was in the 1960s that Scottish physicist Peter Higgs first posited the existence of a particle that causes energy to make the jump to matter. But it was not until last summer that a team of researchers at Europe's Large Hadron Collider — Rolf Heuer, Joseph Incandela and Fabiola Gianotti — at last sealed the deal and in so doing finally fully confirmed Einstein's general theory of relativity,” Time noted. Another candidate is the Mars Curiosity rover. At the moment Egyptian President Mohamed Morsy is leading as he has received support of 47 thousand online voters. “His and his party's electoral victory this summer heralded a new moment for the Arab world's most populous nation, so long kept underfoot by the Western-backed authoritarian regime of Hosni Mubarak,” Time wrote. In previous years Time selected Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, US President Barack Obama, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke as the award’s winners. In 2007 the magazine’s editors selected Russia’s President Vladimir Putin. In mid December editors of the magazine will name this year's winner. Meanwhile anyone can vote online for the person he/she considers as the person who influenced most the news this year for better or worse on the magazine’s website. Source: Voice of Russia

Lionel Messi wins record fourth Ballon d'Or

Zurich: Lionel Messi won the 2012 FIFA World Player of the Year award for a record fourth-successive time after a record-breaking haul of 91 goals over 12 months. Messi smashed Gerd Muller's 40-year-old record of 85 goals in a calendar year to beat his great rival Cristiano Ronaldo and Barcelona teammate Andres Iniesta to the accolade. "To tell the truth this is really unbelievable to get this award, to get a fourth award, and the fourth-consecutive award," the 25-year-old winger said Monday in his acceptance speech. "I would like to recognise my colleagues from Barcelona. Andres, it's a proud moment to be by your side this
year. I would like to thank my family, my friends, my wife and my son." The only players to have won the award three times in a row are the Argentinean star himself and UEFA president Michel Platini. Dutch legends Marco van Basten and Johan Cruyff have won the gong three times but not in succession. Ronaldo, the 2008 Ballon d'Or winner who was nominated for hitting 46 goals to propel Real Madrid to the Spanish title, finishes behind Messi for the second-straight year. Iniesta was shortlisted after his spectacular form helped Spain retain their European Championship title in the summer, and he was named player of the tournament. Iniesta was runner-up to Messi in 2010. Spain coach Vicente Del Bosque won the coach of the year award. Source: News-Bullet

Analyst: Global 3D market flourishes

The global 3D consumer market is thriving in a dynamic environment marked by clear and discernible growth across its major platforms, including cinema, home video and pay-TV video on demand, with international markets continuing to make major contributions to the industry, according to an IHS Screen DigestCross Platform Intelligence report from information and analytics provider IHS. Worldwide metrics are on the rise for 3D technology as a whole. The number of 3D screens is up fourfold over a period of three years, while 3D box office climbed in the double digits from 2010 to 2011. The 3D home-video market is also showing strong growth, bucking the overall trend of a declining physical video market, with US spending on Blu-ray 3D nearly doubling in 2012 from last year’s levels. More 3DTV channels worldwide are likewise now available, including one just launched in China, with plenty of potential for expansion in the years ahead for 3D Video-on-Demand service. “In an age where consumers have at their easy disposal a virtual treasure trove of entertainment options to draw from, the encouraging growth of the 3D medium is remarkable to behold,” said Tony Gunnarsson, analyst for video at IHS Screen Digest. “The continuing expansion of the industry is especially significant when one considers that 3D is but a small niche of overall digital viewing, and that consumers have to shell out considerably more money for 3D products, which are priced at a premium and not necessarily an easy sell in these economically uncertain times.” The number of 3D screens worldwide has grown dramatically in three years, rising by more than a factor of four from approximately 9,000 screens at the end of 2009 to 43,000 by the third quarter this year. The US continues to have the lion’s share of 3D screens, followed by China, France, the United Kingdom and Germany. Meanwhile, global 3D box-office revenue hit $7.0 billion in 2011—the last full year for which full figures are available—up 16 per cent from $6.0 billion in 2010. 3D accounted for 22 per cent of total world box-office receipts in 2011, up from 19 per cent the previous year. In particular, 3D is stabilising in mature cinema markets like the US, where its share of the overall box office is no longer growing as rapidly compared to the earlier years of the format or in other countries where 3D cinema is just taking off. Increasingly, 3D revenue prospects rely on the quality of the 3D film slate, and the wealth—or relative dearth—of titles during a particular period could spell a big difference in 3D revenue prospects in the mature cinema markets. 3D screen growth is also slowing dramatically in the developed regions, where exhibitors have already made a significant investment in 3D screen infrastructure. The opposite is true in China and other emerging international markets, where the continued expansion of new-cinema screen infrastructure as well as the subsequent up-conversion rate from 2-D to 3D is pushing further growth of 3D screens. Overall, international markets continue to account for a rising share of the worldwide 3D box office—73 per cent in 2011, up from 66 per cent in 2010 and 54 per cent in 2009, with the balance held by North America. In the 3D home-video segment, the U.S. continues to make up the largest market for Blu-ray 3D (BD 3D), equivalent to 51 per cent of global BD 3D spending. And while both value and volume for traditional physical video are decreasing, BD 3D is an exception to the trend, with forecasts showing strong growth even out to 2016. Spending by U.S. consumers on the medium is up 94 per cent this year from 2011 levels, to $220 million, with BD 3D unit sales set to climb 105 per cent, to 9.9 million units. “Despite the relatively small market for BD 3D, the format plays an important role for overall physical video,” Gunnarsson noted. “BD 3D is already being marketed as the ultimate home-video experience, and studios are pricing 3D home-video well above Blu-ray 2-D versions.” Growth is also forecast for the BD 3D home-video market in the three big European markets of the United Kingdom, Germany and France. A total of 37 unique dedicated 3D channels have been launched worldwide since 2010, plus another 38 dedicated 3D event broadcasts. Nonetheless, 3DTV launches slowed considerably in 2012, due to uncertainty about investing in, and maintaining, dedicated linear 3D channels. On the plus side were the positive developments on programming, such as the formation of 3Net, a joint venture among Sony, Imax and Discovery to focus on 3D output including documentaries and other niche genres. Some pay-TV operators have also sought to provide 3D movies on a Video-on-Demand basis. Movies and documentaries—not live or original content—are the basis for 3D VoD, but the overall limited slate as well as the higher price of 3D video-on-demand (VoD) movies—as much as 30 per cent over HD titles—may serve to discourage some consumers from adopting the service in the short term. Even so, the 3D VoD market will overcome such obstacles in the years ahead. U.S. consumers, for instance, will spend $76.1 million for 3D VoD by 2016, up from $11.1 million this year. European viewers, meanwhile, will fork out $32.4 million, compared to just $3.5 million during the same period. Penetration for 3D remains highest in 2012 across cinema-screen infrastructure, driven by higher per-ticket revenue and the continued practice of major studios releasing blockbuster titles in 3D. In homes, 3D penetration is dependent on households upgrading to 3DTVs as well as 3D BD players and the associated 3D glasses. 3D features are becoming a standard on high-end HDTV sets and BD players in the forecast period to 2016, resulting in a growing segment of households in developed markets being ripe for 3D movies viewing. By 2016, the penetration of 3D ready TV households will have surpassed that of 3D cinema screens in select markets worldwide. The largest international footprint overall for 3D cinema this year belongs to China, where more than 8,000 screens had been installed as of the third quarter—more than double from a year earlier—as the rapidly growing screen infrastructure makes a significant contribution. The country’s BD 3D space, however, is still in infancy, owing to the lack of a legitimate physical video market in the country in light of rampant piracy. The ability of Chinese manufacturers to integrate 3D as standard feature will also have a significant impact on 3DTV broadcasts moving forward, after Chinese public broadcaster CCTV launched the first 3DTV channel in the country on a trial basis earlier this year. Source: Advanced Television

Going Gaga over MJ’s items

Pop star Lady Gaga purchased 55 items belonging to late singer Michael Jackson in a weekend auction that raised more than $5 million, a portion of which will be donated to charity, Julien’s Auctions said. The auction, held in Beverly Hills, showcased 465 lots of items spanning Jackson's career through the years, including costumes and props used on tour and in music videos. Highlights from the sale included the late singer’s BAD tour jacket raising $240,000, a white glove selling for $192,000 and one of the singer’s Pepsi and Awards jacket garnering more than $68,000, the auction house said in a statement. Following Sunday’s auction, Gaga told her 31 million Twitter followers that “the 55 pieces I collected today will be archived & expertly cared for in the spirit & love of Michael Jackson, his bravery, & fans worldwide.” Jackson died aged 50 in June 2009 in Los Angeles from an overdose of the anesthetic propofol and sedatives. The collection of outfits, designed by Los Angeles-based collaborators Dennis Tompkins and Michael Bush and gifted back to them by the late singer, were taken on a world tour earlier this year, traveling across South America, Europe and Asia. In September, British hat designer Philip Treacy designed his first London fashion week show in a decade around Jackson’s auction costumes, which were worn by the models down the runway and accessorised with hats inspired by the late singer’s life. Gaga not only attended Treacy’s show but was on hand to introduce the milliner's collection. The auction exceeded pre-sale estimates of $1 million to $2 million, and a portion of the final amount raised will benefit the Guide Dogs of America and Nathan Adelson Hospice in Las Vegas. Source: Screen-India

Berlusconi introduces his new First Lady – Francesca, 27

IT SEEMS that Silvio Berlusconi is back in the game in more ways than one. As the perma-tanned 76-year-old embarks on an unlikely bid to become prime minister of Italy for a fourth time, he has a new squeeze in tow who, at 27 years old, is almost 50 years his junior. Rumours that Berlusconi had been dating former TV showgirl Francesca Pascale were confirmed first by one his own MPs, Daniela Santanche, and then, according to The Times, in a "small item on page five of the Berlusconi family's newspaper, Il Giornale". Robert Fox: Don't write off the Demon king, Pascale, who was a pro-Berlusconi councillor in Naples and even founded a group called "Silvio We Will Miss You" when he was ousted from office in 2006, has been linked to Berlusconi since 2010, although they first met in 2004, when she was still a teenager. In 2011 her Smart car was spotted outside Berlusconi's Rome palazzo after his government collapsed. She has also been pictured alongside the former prime minister at AC Milan football matches. He owns the team. The Times also reports that Pascale and Berlusconi were spotted having dinner with his daughter, Marina, on Sunday night. At 46, Marina is old enough to be Pascale's mother. According to The Daily Telegraph, Pascale claims her life revolves around three things - her family, politics, and Signor Berlusconi."[She] is said to be jealous of the other women in his inner circle, including Mara Carfagna, a glamour model whom he appointed equal opportunities minister in his last government.” In the Italian media, Pascale has already been dubbed the country's new 'First Lady', even if her boyfriend is out of power currently. La Repubblica described Pascale as "enterprising" and "careerist" but others have queried her motives. "She, like all the others, was in search of success on TV and is now mysteriously in love with politics," sniffed blogger Elide Messineo. Meanwhile another former Berlusconi squeeze, teenage belly-dancer Karima El Mahroug, better known as Ruby the Heart Stealer, is back in the news after she missed a court date in Milan. Berlusconi is on trial for allegedly paying Roby for sex when she was underage. Her lawyer said she was in Mexico. Source: The Week UK

Smart TVs ‘change viewer perception of ads’

The number of US households with a smart TV will reach 87 million by 2016, according to research from Parks Associates, which has released a new white-paper, commissioned by Rovi, examining new opportunities in advertising based on the growing adoption and usage of connected TV platforms in the US and Western Europe. “Connected TV systems have the ability to change viewer perceptions of advertising,” said Heather Way, senior research analyst, Parks Associates. “These systems enable advertising to be integrated into device navigation and content search, engaging consumers at a point of high receptivity and enabling them to immerse themselves in a rich brand experience. As a result, over 50 per cent of US connected-TV households surveyed by Rovi consider these ads as content, containing useful and valuable information, and they are much more likely to remember and click on these ads.” Other key data from the survey: - 55 per cent of connected-TV households earn at least $75,000 annually and own 11 Internet-enabled devices on average - 72 per cent of connected-TV owners say the connected platform makes watching TV more convenient, and 65 per cent said the technology makes the TV experience more enjoyable - 49 per cent of connected-TV viewers depend on the platform when they are unsure what to watch - 58 per cent of Rovi-served connected households indicate that advertising in the connected platform is an effective medium to communicate with viewers in the household “Consumers are more receptive to advertising that takes this brand-infused approach,” said Jeff Siegel, senior vice president, Worldwide Advertising, Rovi Corporation. “Advertising on connected TVs that provides more immersive brand experiences has a positive impact on consumers. Over 80 per cent of our connected-TV households state they consider these advanced campaigns to be valuable sources of brand information.” Parks Associates further forecasts that over 70 million Blu-ray players, the vast majority Internet-connectable, will be sold worldwide in 2016. Source: Advanced Television

Singapore economy contracts 1.5% but avoids recession

Singapore's economy contracted in the July to September period, but has narrowly avoided a technical recession. Gross domestic product shrank 1.5% compared with the previous three months, the Ministry of Trade and Industry said. However, growth in the April to May quarter was revised from a contraction of 0.7% to slight growth of 0.2%. Asian countries have seen growth slow as a result of dwindling exports to Europe, the US and China. Manufacturing slowdown. Manufacturing has slowed in recent months, as weak demand from those key markets has hit export-dependent Singapore. Many analysts were expecting the government to step in and loosen monetary policy to weaken the Singapore dollar. A strong dollar makes exports more expensive overseas, cutting into the profits earned by exporters. However, the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) said it would maintain its policy of allowing a modest and gradual appreciation of the currency. "I am a bit surprised that MAS chose to maintain, given signs that global growth momentum has lost steam and many other central banks have chosen to ease," said Song Sen Wun, economist at CIMB in Singapore. "The fact that we averted a technical recession and the worry about the impact of the tight labour market probably kept them from easing." A technical recession is defined as two consecutive quarters of economic contraction. The Ministry of Trade and Industry said Singapore was still on track to achieve the target growth of between 1.5% and 2.5% for the year.  Source: Sam Daily Times

Who pocketed Gaddafi’s billions?

By Andrei Ontikov: NATO’s military campaign in Libya is remarkable, among other things, for the following two reasons. First – the damage that the air raids by the Western anti-Gaddafi alliance caused to Libya is estimated to be 7 times bigger than the damage which bombing by the Nazis caused in Europe during WWII. Second – Muammar Gaddafi and his associates had, in total, $ 150 bln on bank accounts in various parts of the world. After the beginning of the Libyan revolution, the West froze these accounts. Now, this money has disappeared somewhere. Russian expert in Eastern affairs Anatoly Egorin tries to analyze these two cases in his recently published book, titled “The Ousting of Muammar Gaddafi. A Libyan Diary. 2011-2012.” Speaking about the damage which Western bombing attacks caused to Libya, one may probably say that every war causes damage. This is true, but the amount of damage can be greater or smaller. It may be doubted that the ousting of Gaddafi, however tyrannical he might have been, was really worth the damage which NATO bombs caused to Libya – to say nothing of the fact that introducing a no-fly zone over a country and then bombing it is, to put it mildly, not very consistent. However, the sum which Gaddafi and his associates had in bank accounts, and which the West, in fact, has stolen – $ 150 bln – might have been enough to reconstruct the Libyan infrastructure after the damage caused by the bombs – if not fully, then, at least, partially. But now, that money has disappeared. Why and where? Here is what Anatoly Egorin says: “The West most likely decided right after the very start of the anti-Gaddafi rebellion in Libya to do whatever possible to prevent Gaddafi from staying in power. His and his associates’ bank accounts were immediately frozen. Or, it would be probably better to say that it was only officially announced that they were frozen, but in reality they were stolen. Nobody can say for sure precisely who stole this money and where it is now. There is only some vague information that it was allegedly pocketed by the bankers themselves and that these bankers allegedly tried to launder this money in offshore zones. Attempts to find this money are now under way, but I doubt that it will ever be found.” “However,” Mr. Egorin continues, “it would be wrong to say that only the West has stolen the money of the former Libyan regime. It is known that those people who fought against Gaddafi and who are now in power in Libya have conveyed many trucks literally stuffed with money abroad.” The Head of the International Association for Democracy in Libya Fatima abu an-Niran confirms what Mr. Egorin says: “The chaotic situation in Libya enabled everyone to steal anything that lay in his or her temptation’s way. The West was quite aware of that, but didn’t try to stop it. I can back my words with facts, and the former head of Libya’s Central Bank can also confirm this.” “The $ 150 bln on Gaddafi’s and other former Libyan leaders’ bank accounts is not the only money that was stolen during the period of anarchy in Libya,” Ms. an-Niran continues. “Lots of money was trafficked and is still being trafficked abroad by the Libyan “revolutionaries” themselves. To a large extent, the situation in Libya still remains chaotic. The new authorities seem to be incapable of controlling the situation in many of the country’s provinces. These provinces are in fact controlled by groups of bandits who do whatever they want with those who try to resist them.” “When the West threw bombs on Libya, Western politicians said that this allegedly was done to help Libyans oust the tyrant and establish democracy in their country,” Ms. an-Niran says. “Now, it has turned out that these words were mere demagogy. The real aim of the West was to try to steal Libya’s riches.” True, it looks like now that Gaddafi has been ousted, the West doesn’t care anymore about what is happening in Libya. It also looks like the current Libyan leaders care more about staying in their posts – or occupying higher posts if possible – than about trying to return the $ 150 bln which mysteriously disappeared back into their country, which now badly needs restoration after the war. Source: Voice of Russia

"Foreign" hamburger?

Russia’s Chief Sanitary Inspector Gennadiy Onishchenko has urged Russians to refrain from eating hamburgers which he described as ‘foreign food’. The United States claims that Onishchenko’s statement has a political coloring. The Voice of Russia’s Yelena Kovachich has met with a number of food experts in an attempt to establish whether Russia’s chief medical officer is playing political games or is concerned about the health of the nation.
By: Yelena Kovachich, The attempts to interpret Onischenko’s critical remarks concerning hamburgers as a protest against the “pernicious” influence of the West are far-fetched. Since Russia has hundreds of McDonald’s outlets which yield good profit, it’s economic, not political motivation that is behind the dispute, says Pavel Salin of the Political Research Center. "Big politics are seldom behind such statements. As a rule, big money is behind. Even though sometimes these kinds of statements are politically motivated, as we witnessed in the case of Georgian-produced wines and mineral water, and Moldavian wines, these instances are fairly rare". Russia’s chief sanitary officer would hardly pursue any commercial gains unless they meant a healthier nation. Onishehchenko is concerned about the health of the nation. Everybody knows that hamburgers are junk food. In his book Fast Food Nation, American writer Eric Schlosser says that obesity is the second killer in the US after tobacco, as one fourth of the country’s adult population eat hamburgers as regular snacks. The number of obese people has doubled in Britain. The number of overweight people, particularly among the young, has been increasing rapidly in seafood and vegetable-loving Japan. No doctor would ever recommend a fast food diet. Onishchenko took a firm stand against hamburgers after a female customer recounted that she had discovered worms inside her McChicken box. A publication to this effect which appeared in The Washington Post described even the thought of it as revolting. It’s no wonder then that the Russian sanitary inspector reacted in such a way. According to Schlosser, hundreds of Americans have been killed by E.coli which was discovered in hamburgers and millions are poisoned by poor quality ingredients in McDonald’s food annually. As it happens, there is nothing insulting about the phrase “foreign food” for Americans. Onishchenko meant that Russians should eat food they are used to genetically. Eskimos eat raw frozen meat, Yakuts eat frozen fish, and Chinese adults don’t drink milk. National food traditions differ. As for the Russian food, it’s international, using a combination of different gastronomic preferences. Russians traditionally eat food from Asia, the Caucasus, Siberia. The European and French traditions are strong as well. From the French Russians have borrowed cutlets, omellettes, mousses and compotes. Russians are thus tolerant to foreign food. By and large, the hamburger should be “foreign” to the whole of humanity if people want to be healthy and in good shape." Source: Voice of Russia
