Michael Bloomberg may throw his hat in US presidential ring

Former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg
Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire former mayor of New York City, said he is considering running for US president in this year, the Financial Times reported on Monday. The 73-year-old founder of the eponymous financial information group was critical of the quality of debate in the presidential contest and said he was "looking at all the options" when asked whether he was considering a run, the newspaper said. "I find the level of discourse and discussion distressingly banal and an outrage and an insult to the voters," Bloomberg told the Financial Times in an interview, adding that the US public deserved "a lot better". Bloomberg has told aides to draw up plans for an independent campaign for the US presidency, a source familiar with the situation told Reuters on 23 January, confirming a report in the New York Times. He would be willing to spend at least $1 billion of his own money on a campaign for the November 2016 election, according to the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the former mayor's thinking. Bloomberg has given himself an early March deadline for entering the race, the source said, after commissioning a poll in December to see how he would fare against Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, the Republican and Democratic front-runners. No third-party candidate has ever won a US presidential election. But Bloomberg, who has close Wall Street ties and liberal social views, sees an opening for his candidacy if Republicans nominate Trump or Texas Senator Ted Cruz and the Democrats nominate Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, the source said. A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll showed a third-party presidential run by Bloomberg would be a long shot but could help real estate mogul Donald Trump if he lands the Republican nomination. In a matchup between Trump and Clinton, adding Bloomberg's name to the ballot would trim Clinton's lead over Trump to six percentage points from 10, according to the poll conducted from 23-27 January. In a matchup pitting Trump versus Sanders, adding Bloomberg would erode Sanders' lead over Trump to seven points from 12, the poll results showed. In all matchups, Bloomberg himself would land just 10 per cent or less of the vote in November. The 73-year-old financial information industry billionaire, who earned a reputation as a social liberal with strong Wall Street ties during his time as New York City mayor, has considered a White House run for years. ‘A director never finishes a film, he abandons it’

He likes to drive his characters mad and make his audience uncomfortable. But in persona, film-maker Darren Aronofsky, the mind behind intense and tough films like Black Swan is funny and easy. At a roundtable chat organised at the just concluded 12th International Marrakech Film Festival, he was full of quips and quotes. He also spoke at length about his forthcoming Russell Crowe film Noah. Excerpts: On hurricane Sandy’s impact on the filming of Noah: We actually were quite okay. We built a sea worthy vessel —the actual Ark was built in Long Island — which got wrecked since the impact of the Hurricane on Long Island was a lot. We couldn’t reach the sets for weeks. There was no electricity in that area for four days. But the emotional and human toll was much more than physical toll. On tweeting details about Noah: I’m a pretty private person. Agreed that Twitter is a pretty strange thing for me to get involved with, but I feel that we are in the New World so if one hasn’t got on to social media then one can feel left out. I’ve observed the great comedian Louis C.K. over the years. That guy has made millions by talking to his fanbase! I still don’t know how filmmakers will benefit from Twitter, but personally I like talking to young filmmakers, enjoy participating in Q & A and teasing people a bit so I kind of like Twitter. The studio was a bit unsure but being on Twitter allowed me the chance to let out the first image of the film. Doing this on our own is way better, it restricts a big crane sitting on the set. So I guess, it works well. On the story of Noah and his Ark: I’ve been working on Noah forever. In fact this was the first film after Pi that I pitched. I’ve had all these ideas way before I became a filmmaker. Even Black Swan and The Wrestler were ideas I had way back when I was in college. In fact this is my fear—I feel I'm running out of ideas! Now that we are making Noah, they are saying making a Bible picture is the new trend but when we set out we got a lot of No’s and passes before finally we got our studios Paramount Pictures and New Regency interested in it. On his experiments with Indian films: I know Bollywood is kind of a bad word here. Is there a better word? (PS: On my prodding that we call it the Hindi Film Industry, so he can call it Hi Fi, he immediately caught on to the word). Yeah, Hi Fi is better! So I got into Hi Fi a long time ago — it was the same time when my interest in Chinese and Hong Kong films was beginning. I checked out quite a few Hindi movies. I love that one about the Great Bandit — Sholay. I also saw Bandit Queen which was kind of an art film. I like how Baz Luhrmann has taken up the ingredients of Hi Fi films and the way he utilises them. In my neighbourhood in Manhattan, there is a cinema place dedicated to Hi Fi so I keep checking out the stuff that’s playing there. On whether Noah is similar to Life of Pi: I saw Life of Pi and I liked it. There are some visual similarities in terms of the animals and water, but let's see how we do our VFX. On his jinx with superhero films like Batman, Wolverine: I'd like to think Noah was a superhero. He might not have a super power, but what he does is much like a super hero. It's been my dream to do this — to bring my original take on an old story. On the storylines of his films and their uncomfortable quotient: When people say my films make them uncomfortable, I say ‘Very Good!’ I think The Fountain had a kind of a happy ending. Even in Black Swan, she was kinda happy. The Wrestler too. I don’t know. The idea is to start of a character and lead on their conflict. I do agree that sometimes I tend to drive my characters mad, but then that’s okay, I guess. I like the tightrope walk between sanity and insanity that my characters take. It’s just a good story device — when people go slightly over the edge, you can look back and see what was before it. On whether he has it in him to ever make a comedy: As a student I made four shorts and a comedy. Comedian Chris Rock says there is a thin line between laughing and crying — in the former you laugh out the breath and in the latter, you take the breath in. Comedy is a scary genre because if you miss, then you miss. On whether he believes in the classical Hollywood happy ending: It never made sense to me even as a kid. I’m of the opinion that a happy ending is never always a good thing. I grew up in New York, where it wasn’t like that. Life comes with a lot of complications. You never know, who is happy or sad. Guess it is something to do with my big science background. Being trained as a biologist for a few years, I have an environmental take to life which alters my perspective. On if he’d like to change anything in any of his films: I never look back at films. If you look back in a film, you kind of get lost in it. When they were coming up with the DVD of Requiem for a Dream, I stayed out of it, but on the insistence of my sound guy, I watched it and I couldn’t recognise the person, who had made it. It was surely a different person, I could remember myself but I don’t think you can ever recreate the same kind of passion that you had for a film when you are really making it. After a while, you gotta let go. I believe a director never finishes a film, he abandons it. On the status of his HBO series Hobgoblin: It’s been a while I got on the project, but then when I’m making a movie, it’s like I’m in a submarine. I’ll get to it now. Hobgoblin is about a group of magicians and con artists, who use their powers of deception to defeat Hitler during WWII. On whether he believes in magic: Magic? It’s a loaded question? Do I believe in magic that makes a Tiger disappear from a box? Or the simple things? I get touched by magic. I love magicians. David Blaine is a dear friend. I can watch the little tricks these magicians come up with all day. Magical realism is my favourite genre by the way.director never finishes a film, he abandons it’ , Image: flickr.com

New York City to provide ID cards for all, including illegal immigrants

New York City will offer a municipal identity card for all residents, including illegal immigrants, amid a federal-level deadlock over immigration reforms that seeks to provide citizenship to some 11 million undocumented people, including Indians. The ID card will be issued to all residents of the five NYC boroughs, regardless of their immigration status. The city administration would immediately initiate implementation of the programme, with the goal of launching the new identification card in January 2015. The card would be issued at no cost for applicants during the programme’s first year. “We cannot accept a city where some of our residents are forced to live fearfully in the shadows, unable to visit their child’s school or sign a lease. This legislation will begin to provide New Yorkers with the dignity and peace of mind they deserve,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said here on Thursday. “This bill has become reality because community activists and organisers worked tirelessly to make this day happen.” The card would ensure access to city services and grant admission to all municipal buildings to all city’s residents, including the undocumented residents. The city is also aiming to have the card recognised by banks, as well as connecting the ID with stores, restaurants, cultural institutions and other incentive programmes. The applicants will have to furnish proof of their identity and their residency in New York, which currently has 8.4 million residents. The city would protect the confidentiality of all municipal ID card applications, and would not ask applicants about their immigration status. Administration officials described the legislation as a “landmark” step that would create a “more fair and just city that is inclusive of all New Yorkers”. Council Member Carlos Menchaca, Chair of the Committee on Immigration, said the bill signing is a transformative moment as it would provide New Yorkers with have access to the largest municipal identification programme in the country. “This identification programme is real celebration of the diversity of this city, and a commitment to the protection—and inclusion—of all,” Menchaca said. The legislation comes even as immigration reform remains stalled in Washington. US President Barack Obama has appealed to the Republican leadership of the Congress to pass the comprehensive immigration reform to address successfully in future problems like the current humanitarian crisis on the country’s Southern border with Mexico. Obama said the legislation, when signed into law would pave the way for citizenship to some 11 million undocumented people, including Indians. Source: The Indian Express

How London lost its financial crown to New York

NEW YORK has overtaken London as the world's leading financial centre for the first time since 2007, according to the influential Global Financial Centres Index.
The Big Apple's lead is small, reports the FT. However, it reflects the fact that the City's reputation has been undermined by several problems, said Mark Yeandle of Z/Yen Group, which compiled the index. And he warned that these issues have now reached "tipping point". Political uncertainty: Many of the survey's 3,246 respondents were exercised by the question of Britain's place in Europe, ahead of a possible referendum, as well as the uncertainty posed by the Scottish independence vote. Both have heightened concerns about the long-term stability and structure of the UK. Scandals: London has been hit harder than
Political uncertainty in the UK, City scandals and restricted bonuses have all damaged the capital
other centres by the Libor and Forex rigging scandals because of its larger market share. Domestic imbroglios, like the combined £20bn compensation payouts made by UK banks for PPI mis-selling, have contributed to a damaging "drip-feed" effect. There are concerns that the resulting "regulatory creep" could stifle the City's entrepreneurialism. Bonuses: The continuing crackdown on bankers' bonuses is making financial centres like New York, Singapore and Hong Kong, where pay is less constrained, more attractive as places to work. PlayStation 4 Will Stream Games

Not surprisingly, the PlayStation 4 rumors have been flowing as of late. With the expected reveal of the console coming this Wednesday, February 20 in New York City, it only makes sense that little bits of information would begin to emerge about what we’ll be seeing. The newest rumor is in regard to the next PlayStation’s ability to stream games. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that “Sony Corp. is planning to offer technology to stream games to its next videogame console,” according to its own sources. The new technology, to be unveiled Wednesday along with the new console, will allow users to play games
delivered over the Internet, these people said. The streaming service, they added, is designed to use current PlayStation 3 titles on the new console; the new device is also expected to play new games stored on optical discs. As WSJ points out, such a move on Sony’s part would be unsurprising. Even when it was drowning in red ink, it still took a massive risk when it bought streaming service Gaikai for $380 million. There is absolutely no doubt that, with an investment that significant at such a difficult timefor Sony, Gaikai's technology will be poised to play an important role in Sony’s future. Streaming games to PlayStation 4 (and perhaps other Sony devices) would be significant, giving gamers access to a wide array of titles that they never had to purchase outright. This could suggest that Sony may have a game rental-like service on its next PlayStation, or perhaps even a new subscription service that would give gamers access to a library of offerings. At this point, everything remains speculative. We've reached out to Sony for official comment and will update when we hear back. In the meantime, catch up on all of the pertinent PlayStation 4 news and rumors, including (but not limited to) information on PS4's controller, word of a new LittleBigPlanet and the possibility of  Source: IGN

Coca-Cola issues new ads laying out its efforts in tackling the nation’s disease

Starting from Monday on the highest-rated shows on CNN, Fox News and MSNBC will be interrupted by Coca-Cola two-minute ads laying out the company’s record of providing drinks with fewer calories and noting that weight gain is the result of consuming too many calories – not just soda. In such a manner Coca-Cola, one of the world’s most powerful brands, has set to dismiss accusations that soft drinks are the primary culprits of obesity and promote the company’s efforts to fight the nation’s disease.
Amid general concerns over the nation, the youngest part of it in particular, gaining weight too fast – childhood obesity has more than tripled in the past 30 years – New York City has decided to enact a cap on the size of soft drinks sold at restaurants, movie theaters and sports arenas. The city’s pioneer move has inspired the mayor of Cambridge, Mass., to introduce a similar measure. For a long time Coca-Cola has been associated with the idea of happiness. But the Coca-Cola happiness, as it has turned out, is measured in kilograms. A decades-long study involving more than 33,000 Americans, for example, suggested that drinking sugary beverages interacts with genes that affect weight. Some new research has also suggested that sugary drinks cause people to gain kilograms independent of other behavior. With the new campaign to kick off next week Coca-Cola is set to weigh in the debate and points to the efforts the company performed over the past years to tackle the problem. "There's an important conversation going on about obesity out there, and we want to be a part of the conversation," Stuart Kronauge, general manager of sparkling beverages for Coca-Cola North America, said. One of the videos to be aired on US television will remind viewers that weight management is about calorie counting, including those that come from Coca-Cola beverages. The advert also recalls Coca-Cola’s commitment to deliver more beverage choices, including low- and no-calorie options, to the public. Besides, as the company noted, it already puts calorie counts on the front of its cans and bottles. It is noteworthy that Coca-Cola has been shaping its business for the past years based on the public concern over the high calorie content of its soft drinks. Nearly one-third of its sales in the US and Canada is diet soft drinks. Then come sports drinks and bottled water. It is the first time the company has gone on the offensive to tackle widespread criticism that sugary beverages are one of the biggest contributors to the obesity epidemic. The ads have been attacked before they were shown. “This is about confusing the public,” said Michele R. Simon, a public health lawyer who writes frequently about the food and beverage business and its role in public health issues. “They are downplaying the serious health effects of drinking too much soda and making it sound like balancing soda consumption with exercise is the only issue, when there are plenty of other reasons not to consume too much of these kinds of products.” Source: Voice of Russia

Thane tribal girl's film wins award in New York

Thane tribal girl's
A documentary film made by fifteen year-old Jayshree Janu Kharpade, a tribal girl from Wada taluka of Thane district, has won an award in the Asian American Film Festival held in New York recently. Jayashree, who studies in Eklavya Parivartan Vidyalaya here, made the 27-minute-long documentary- 'Fire in our Hearts' on the lives of the children in the brick kiln owners. In 2003, when she was eight, Jayshree had to quit school. After her mother's death, she had to tend to her three younger brothers while her father worked at a brick kiln. In the film, which won the 'One to Watch' award at the festival, Jayshree documented her family and village as well as the tenacious efforts of the tribal union for the equal rights to education. "It shows that if tribal girls are given an opportunity, they can excel. However, the sorry state is that they have been ignored by the society and it is high time we bring them into the main stream," Vivek Pandit, chief of the Shramajivi Sanghatana said. It was the story of the girl's struggle that made documentary filmmaker Joyce Chopra of New York-based NGO, By Kids, approach Jayshree. A two-member team flew down from New York in February this year and stayed for a month in the boarding school to teach Jayshree to handle the camera. After a week of lessons on how to handle the camera, the girl marched to her village in Wada to document the story of her life. The Asian American International Film Festival (AAIFF) is produced by Asian CineVision (ACV), a nonprofit media arts organization devoted to the development, promotion and preservation of Asian and Asian American film and video. Source: Screen India

Foreign governments are effectively influencing CNN’s coverage

Journalist Amber Lyon says she is the victim of CNN censorship in an exclusive interview to the Voice of Russia. Lyon shot her documentary “iRevolution: Online Warriors of the Arab Spring” produced by CNN about Bahrain and the Arab Spring which was censored. She claims that foreign governments are effectively influencing CNN’s coverage, and this happens not only with reports on Bahrain, but also with Georgian coverage.

By Rob Sachs: Journalists covering the Arab Spring often times they found themselves in danger situations. The subject itself risks their reputations, livelihoods and sometimes ever they lives by speaking out. Such was the situation in Bahrain when journalist Amber Lyon shot her documentary “iRevolution: Online Warriors of the Arab Spring” produced by CNN. Now Lyon says she is the victim of censorship.  CNN reports on Georgia were government sponsoredTell us about your experiences in Bahrain?
How did it all come about that you were selected to go there and report? I was working at documentary investigative unit at CNN. That unit has been dissolved, that’s why I’m no longer with the network. And we had gone over there to do a documentary on social media and how it had galvanized the Arab Spring. And while we were there, one of the countries we focused on was Bahrain. So we were in Bahrain reporting and happened to notice the Saudi troops entering the country and really created a massive police state and activists were going missing, our sources were going missing. They had militarized the hospitals, we have seen ambulance drivers who were beaten, doctors, journalists and protestors as well. So we shifted our focus on human rights’ abuses in this country and while we were there filming these abuses, crew was violently detained by Bahraini security forces at machine gunpoint. But we were able to actually get out with some of this video and bring it back and start airing that on CNN. Where did your dispute with CNN begin? It happened first – and I know CNN will say that it already did lots of Bahrain stories, and that’s true – when we first returned I went on air quite often to really urgently inform the public of what was going on, because some of the people were at that time being tortured. And I got on air very frequently and easily at the beginning. But then phone calls started coming in from Bahrain and also from the numerous PR companies representing Bahrain. And eventually I started noticing that these PR statements were being added into my reporting by editors in order to give Bahrain’s side of the story. But in many situations that was just propaganda. So it started concerning me. It also became more and more difficult, because these were stories on air and I had to cut out some much of red tape. It almost became ridiculous and so time-consuming that it was difficult to get Bahrain covered on air. Three months later we finished our documentary in June and it aired on CNN U.S., but didn’t air on CNN International. And that’s where this dispute on censorship raised. When it comes to black and white of the situation here is that after it didn’t air on CNN international, I began an investigation and found out that CNN is taking money from regime in order to create sponsored content. Let’s go back. You said that your documentary did, in fact, air on CNN, but not on CNN International. Was there an agreement that it’d be aired on CNN International? Because in their defense they said that they never intended to air it on CNN International. What was your understanding? My understanding was, of course, a lot of documentaries didn’t air on CNN International. And that’s a great and easy excuse. That being said, the entire documentary was filmed overseas with this audience in mind. And if you count employee’s salaries and everything else, documentary was well over 300,000 to produce and if it was free content, we would just have given CNN International. What really prompted me was this long-time CNN executive contacting me, writing me, meeting with me, calling me, telling me he needs to look into this, telling me that something suspicious is going on. And when I started looking into it, I found out that Bahrain is actually a paying customer at CNN. Bahrain is giving CNN undisclosed amount of money to create positive content. CNN may say that it’s independent. But you watch some of this content and tell me what you think! They’re going live on Bahrain’s pearl divers at a time when the country is going through horrific human rights’ abuses and majority of the people are revolting! And they’re taking money not only from Bahraini regime – Kazakhstan, Georgia, numerous amounts of countries in exchange for creating these hour-long-plus programs that viewers don’t know are being sponsored by actual regimes. Regardless of whether they say they censor that Bahrain documentary or not – this network calls itself “the most trusted name in news” – and they’re taking money from regimes in exchange for content! That crashes all journalistic ethics. CNN’s response was that alongside many other news’ organizations, they have a very small amount of advertising from the Bahrain Economic Development Board. What you’re saying here is much heavier charges. Do you think that foreign governments are effectively influencing CNN’s coverage and American news outlets have effectively been convinced to air positive stories about countries because of monetary issues? Of course! It’s blank and white. You watch this content! In some cases they have government officials disguised as experts in these reports. Watch the report on Georgia! Watch the report on Bahrain! It’s not editorially independent or it’s a lot rosier than news typically is. We, as journalists, re supposed to be watchdogs on government. And how can you be a watchdog on a paying customer? You watch the CNN i-List program that was paid for by Bahrain. It’s CNN i-List. You can go on YouTube and see the commercial. Not once our viewers notified that this is actually a paid-for commercial content. And as an unassuming viewer, you don’t know that you’re being fed propaganda on the “most trusted name of news”. And I feel that it’s not only defrauding viewers, it’s also defrauding journalists. I was never told that they were taking money from the very regime that I was investigating! Speaking of CNN’s own journalists, one of the things they said in their answer to your charges they said, “Look, we have had lots of coverage on what’s going on in Bahrain! We’ve sent numerous reporters there, lots of whom are fluent Arabic speakers.” Did you ever feel suppressed with some people pointing you out not to say some things about Bahrain in terms of when you spoke out? Like I said, the propaganda statements were added to my reporting and I had to be softer with my language in regard to referring to Bahrain regime. I had to call it “a government” which makes it sound to the U.S. that it’s democratic. And there were various situations when it was more difficult to cover the Bahrain stories than other stories I was reporting on. When we were in Bahrain it was the time of intense crackdown on protestors when Saudi troops entered and really started grounding these protestors one by one. Bodies were being just dumped out. Security forces were going from neighborhood to neighborhood blocking out the opposition. That was a critical time to get the coverage on Bahrain and we were one of the only crews in the world in the country. So, our coverage was vital. After we left in March, CNN didn’t send another crew back until June. You mentioned the difficulty in covering, in having to change the language from “regime” to “government” and what that does. In response to that, CNN was saying that they were trying to get the other side, that journalism always gets both sides of the story. How do you get both sides of the story if your reporting is showing what you’ve seen and obviously it’s very compelling and you have a lot of dramatic stories to tell – is there fair other side? And who do you present the other side in a fair way? That’s difficult and tough. Journalistically though it’s not journalism, what they were doing – they would write a page-long criticism of my journalism pretty much slamming it calling it unethical. They put this statement on their website and linked it to my videos. Stuff like that is propaganda. It’s not journalism! And I noticed that regime systematically called these protestors “Iran-backed” and “terrorists” and “extremists”. And they used these three words over and over. They even didn’t care what the story is about. They just wanted these words in the stories so that the American public is fed that word over and over and ultimately begin to believe that these protestors are terrorists or extremists. And I saw this systematic use of propaganda similar to the way the American public was fed “weapons of mass destruction” leading to Iraq war. This is a systematic was to try to influence public opinion. And I saw them doing that. And I didn’t want it to be included in my reporting, but was forced to. And that’s dangerous – no matter how eccentric the statements are, if they’re repeated over and over, people begin to take them in their minds as truth. You talk to anyone who studies psychology. And that was dangerous for me, because I felt that they were trying to delegitimize these protestors very systematically. And I don’t think that in journalism we should allow this. We should prove our statements. And I had no proof that these protestors were terrorists! Everything I had seen was the protestors terrorized by the government and by the regime. Until I can’t prove my statements, I won’t put them in my reporting, because that’s just propaganda. You talked about these editors and other senior people at CNN who urged you to look closer into what was going on. What did they do? Did they leave? How did they respond to what happened to you and to your reporting? I only had positive response. But that being said, I don’t know if anyone left. I know that it bothers them. I know there’s a lot of talk among my old colleagues. Whether any journalist will come out in the future – I don’t know, but now I’m the only one. What are you going to do to go forward? How are you going to approach your contracts with media outlets to ensure you can uphold journalism standards and ethics that you want? I’m not going to have any more contracts with media outlets. I’ve worked in the mainstream media in the U.S. for 10 years. And I was systematically censored at almost every outlet I worked at. And right now the state of the mainstream media in the U.S. is journalistically scary. And I think that the problem is that we have too many executives who are businessmen making decisions, we don’t have journalists making decisions with journalistic values on the bottom line. And a lot of these corporations don’t want to lose a dollar and they just want to please everyone. They don’t take stances they should be taking journalistically. So I will not be working with any media outlet. I’m working now with other journalists, New York Time reporters, other journalists who feel the same way, with whom we are trying to come up with a solution Ultimately, someone has to pay you a salary, money has to come from somewhere. There’re other places to work at. Perhaps, it’s not answering to a dollar. Do you think there’s a way to go? You can be an effective journalist, get paid, have a livelihood? What do you think would work? I can’t trust anyone anymore. I’m an idealist. I have old-fashioned journalistic ethics and I’ve seen it crashed too many times working with other outlets. I’m just working now with other journalists and starting my own thing. And I also do a lot of photography. So I’m making money from that. I’m working on a book A Photographic Essay of Protests in the U.S. You know, I’ll be fine! But I refuse to work for another outlet, because in the end everyone has some kind of agenda. And unfortunately, it’s usually not considering the public good and the American people and what they need to hear. Unfortunately, people stand to criticize Americans. If you travel overseas, you’ll mention that. These poor people are constantly seeing lies by the media and how do they know what to believe? Most of them can’t afford to travel to see the truth like we can as journalists and it’s a shame. As journalists, we’re beginning to step up in this country and take back the media. For me the only way is to do my own thing. Source: Voice of Russia

Republicans and Democrats – quotes from politicians

Republicans and Democrats – quotes from politicians
“He [Mitt Romney] demonstrated a lack of sophistication about what’s going on in the world, his rapid change in his positions. Look, being president requires a clear vision and a steady hand. That’s exactly what President Obama demonstrated tonight and it’s exactly what governor Romney demonstrated was lacking.”
Vice President Joe Biden, October 23.2012, Time,2:34–2:53, Making comments after the final Presidential Debate “We had a severe outbreak last night. It was, it was at least, at least ‘stage 3 Romnesia’ .If you
can’t seem to remember the policies on your website or the promises that you’ve been making over the 6 years that you’ve been running for president, if you can’t even remember what you said last week –don’t worry, Obamacare covers pre-existing conditions. We can fix you up. We can cure this disease.” President Barack Obama, October 23.2012, Time—0:08—0:48On the campaign trail at a post-debate rally
“America's going to come back. And for that to happen, we're going to have to have a president who can work across the aisle. I was in a state where my legislature was 87 percent Democrat. I learned how to get along on the other side of the aisle. We've got to do that in Washington. Washington is broken. I know what it takes to get this country back. And we'll work with good Democrats and good Republicans to do that.” Mitt Romney, October 22.2012, Time—1:34:26—1:34:51, At the third presidential debate at Lynn University in Boca Raton, Florida
“Governor Romney, I'm glad that you recognize that al-Qaida's a threat because a few months ago when you were asked, what's the biggest geopolitical threat facing America, you said Russia — not al-Qaida, you said Russia. And the 1980s are now calling to ask for their foreign policy back because, you know, the Cold War's been over for 20 years.” President Barack Obama, October 22.2012, Time—0:00—0:18, At the third presidential debate at Lynn University in Boca Raton, Florida
“Here’s our commitment to you, we’re offering you this choice, so you can decide what kind of country you want to have and we are not going to duck these tough issues. We’re not going to kick the can down the road, we’re going to lead. And we’re not going to spend the next 4 years blaming others, we’re going to take responsibility and fix this mess in Washington.” Paul Ryan, October 21.2012, Time—0:58—1:18, On the campaign trail in Colorado Springs, Colorado
“And — and so we — we took a concerted effort to go out and find women who had backgrounds that could be qualified to become members of our cabinet. I went to a number of women's groups and said, can you help us find folks? And I brought us whole binders full of — of women. I was proud of the fact that after I staffed my cabinet and my senior staff that the University of New York in Albany did a survey of all 50 states and concluded that mine had more women in senior leadership positions than any other state in America.” Mitt Romney, October 16.2012, Time— 0:38:01—0:38:30The Second Presidential Debate at Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York
Song parodies on Obama and Romney:
“This is one of the things I love about Barack. He’s so used to having strong women in his life um you know he, it’s odd I tell him that this is somehow you know god keeping his testosterone in check because really he is surrounded by women. You know he grew up with a single mom, his grandmother was the you know true head of household, he married me, he’s got Malia and Sasha who do not mince their words and he's sustained himself through a life of strong women.” Michelle Obama, October 8.2012, Time—2:16—2:48 Interview with Cynthia McFadden on Nightline from ABC News
“I had a different reaction to that first debate than a lot of people did. I mean I thought, I thought – wow here’s old moderate Mitt, where’ve you been boy, I’ve missed you all these last few years. But I was paying attention these past 2 years and it was like one of these Bain Capital deals, you know where he is the closer. So, he shows up, doesn’t really know much about the deal and says, tell me what I’m supposed to say to close.” Bill Clinton, October 9.2012, Time—0:00—0:37Opinion about the first presidential debate between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney
“We want everybody to succeed. We want to get people out of poverty, in the middle class, on to lives of self-sufficiency. We believe in opportunity and upward mobility. That's what we're going to push for in a Romney administration.” Paul Ryan, October 11.2012, Time—26:35—26:45Vice Presidential Debate: “My friend [Paul Ryan] says that 30 percent of the American people are takers. They — Romney points out, 47 percent of the people won't take responsibility. He's talking about my mother and father. And he's talking about the places I grew up in, my neighbors in Scranton and Claymont.” Joe Biden, October 11.2012, Time—1:27:55—1:28:10Vice Presidential Debate.
Barack Obama talking to ABC news, post debate: “Governor Romney went to a lot of trouble to try to hide what his positions are because he knows that those ideas have been rejected, they won’t work. And if he’s made an honest presentation about what he’s proposed, he will lose because the American people are not going to go back there.” Barack Obama, October 10.2012, Time—0:48—1:03, Commercial about why Mitt Romney is the right choice for Americans "My plan will create 12 million new jobs over the next 4 years, helping lift families out of poverty and strengthening the middle class.” Mitt Romney, September 27. 2012, Time—0:40—0:49
Speech at a celebrity-led fundraiser in Los Angeles: “We’ve got some work to do, we’ve got an election to win, everything we fought for in 2008 is on the line here in 2012. And I need your help to finish what we started.”, Barack Obama, October 7.2012, Time—0:58—1:12
On the campaign trail in Denver Colorado, talking about his first presidential debate with Mitt Romney: “When I got onto the stage, I met this very spirited fellow who claimed to be Mitt Romney. But it couldn’t have been Mitt Romney because the real Mitt Romney has been running around the country for the last year promising 5 trillion dollars in tax cuts to favor the wealthy. The fellow on stage last night said he didn’t know anything about that.” Barack Obama, October 4.2012, Time—0:16—0:48
When you have a fire in an aircraft, there’s no place to go exactly. And you can’t find any oxygen from outside the aircraft to get in the aircraft cause the windows don’t open. I don’t know why they don’t do that, but it’s a real problem. Michelle Obama, September 4. 2012, Time – 9:32-9:52The Democratic National
Convention “What I find so offensive about his tax plan, is by raising taxes on small business as he does, he will kill jobs. And right now, what America needs, as much as anything else, is more jobs. More jobs—more take home pay, that’s the whole focus of my campaign.” Mitt Romney, October 4.2012, Post Debate Interview, Time—14:50—15:07, “Last night, the American people got to see the guy I know, a decisive, optimistic, confident leader, a person with a plan to create jobs and grow the economy. That’s what the country saw. So, they now know they have a very clear choice. Growth-opportunity or stagnation-dependency.” , Paul Ryan, October 4.2012, Post Debate Interview, Time—5:14-5:31
“We may not be able to match our opponents dollar for dollar, but I know we can outmatch them door to door because of folks like you.” Joe Biden, October 3.2012, Post Debate Remarks, Time –3:23-3:31, “Governor Romney laid out a fundamentally different philosophy. He called for a tax plan that would mean massive cuts for the wealthy, but he refused to explain how he could possibly pay for them without raising taxes on middle class families. Instead he just denied how big these tax cuts were.” Joe Biden, October 3.2012, Post Debate Remarks, Time –1:18-1:35

I've got a different view. I think we've got to invest in education and training.” Barack Obama, October 3.2012, Time—3:53- 4:07Presidential Debate from the University of Denver: “Under the president's policies, middle-income Americans have been buried. They're — they're just being crushed. Middle-income Americans have seen their income come down by $4,300. This is a — this is a tax in and of itself.” Mitt Romney, October 3.2012, Time—10:02- 10:15Presidential Debate from the University of Denver:

And on every issue, the choice you face won't just be between two candidates or two parties. It will be a choice between two different paths for America, a choice between two fundamentally different visions for the future. Obama, September 6. 2012, Time -- 4:21- 4:35, “When Barack and I — when Barack and I were growing up, there was an implicit understanding in America that if you took responsibility, you'd get a fair shot at a better life.” Biden, September 6.2012, Time—9:21- 9:36, Joe Biden at the Democratic National

China blocks access to Bloomberg and Businessweek sites

Web users in mainland China are unable to access Bloomberg's websites, after they were blocked by local authorities. The news agency thinks the move is a response to an article published about the fortunes of Vice President Xi Jinping's extended family. China has repeatedly blocked sensitive stories. Two days ago, the New York Times' social media accounts were suspended for several hours. Xi Jinping is set to become the country's next president. "Our Bloomberg.com and Businessweek.com websites are currently inaccessible in China in reaction, we believe, to a Bloomberg News story that was published on Friday morning," Bloomberg told the BBC. "Everything else is up and running - consumer and free public [sites] facing are blocked. Terminals are not disrupted." The article talks about the multi-million dollar wealth of some of the Vice President's relatives. The fortune amounts to investments in firms with total assets of $376m (£240m), an 18% indirect stake in a rare-earths company with $1.73bn (£1.12bn) in assets and a $20.2m (£12.8m)
Some Chinese web users try to find a way round the restrictions
holding in a technology company. "As Xi climbed the Communist Party ranks, his extended family expanded their business interests to include minerals, real estate and mobile-phone equipment, according to public documents compiled by Bloomberg," said the story. The article said that the vice president's extended family also owns an empty villa at the South China Sea in Hong Kong, with an estimated value of $31.5m (£20.1m), and at least six other Hong Kong properties that have a combined estimated value of $24.1m (£15m).Great Firewall It is not the first time China's authorities blocked access to a foreign website. The country closely monitors all internet content that crosses its borders, and several other western firms failed to penetrate what is known as the Great Firewall of China. Websites of YouTube, Google+, Twitter, Dropbox, Facebook and Foursquare are all banned in the communist nation. The move to block access to Bloomberg and Businessweek demonstrates that the wealth of the family of the country's possible next leader is also a sensitive subject for Beijing. "The government has always been very careful in, on the one hand, emphasising how they want to contain corruption but yet also worrying about how reports of this nature might galvanise public opinion against the Communist Party," said Dali Yang, a political scientist at the University of Chicago Center in Beijing. The New York Times launched a Chinese language version of its website two days ago, aiming to tap into the world's biggest internet market. But at least three of the newspaper's accounts with China's Twitter-like services got suspended within hours of the launch of its Chinese language portal.Source: SAM Daily Times

After strong debate, Romney leads polls as presidential race gets close

With his impressive performance during the last week's debates, the Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has taken a lead of less than a per cent over US President Barack Obama, major national surveys have said. Real Clear Politics, the website which maintains a track of all the major national polling, yesterday reported for the first time that Romney leads by a margin of 0.7 percentage points over Obama if the average of all the recent polls are taken. While Rasmussen Tracking puts both the leaders at a virtual tie (with 48 per cent), Romney has a lead of two per cent over Obama in two polls Gallup polls and IBD/TIPP Tracking gives. The lead increases to four per cent in the Pew Research poll. However, the margins of all these polls come within the range of statistical error. As such experts are now saying this as a very close race. Whereas, the Obama Camp brushed off the poll results in the aftermath of the last week's debate. "The one thing I will say is that we've always felt this race would be close. That's not a new approach from our end," the Obama Campaign spokeswoman, Jen Psaki, told reporters travelling with Obama on Air Force One. "We feel that the race and the states in play have been entirely consistent. They were a couple of weeks ago; they still are today. This is a race that is being competed every day – about seven to nine states. That's where we're up on the air. That's where our focus is. And so I don't have any changes or updates on the strategy beyond that," Psaki said. Meanwhile, some regional polls suggested that Romney has started narrowing the lead in some of the key battle ground States. One of them being the key battle ground State, according to a latest CNN poll. Obama now has an advantage over Romney by four percentage point, which comes within the sampling error. Before the debate Obama had a lead of 7-10 point advantage over the former governor of Massachusetts. American Research Group poll for Ohio released yesterday gave Romney (48 per cent) a one per cent lead over Obama (47 per cent) among likely voters. "Independent voters, suburban voters, and older voters are all evenly divided, indicating a close race right now," says CNN Polling director Keating Holland. "But that's not a prediction of what will happen in November. With one in eight likely voters saying that they could change their minds between now and November, and several crucial debates still to come, there is every reason to expect the race to change in Ohio," Holland said. The next presidential debate in New York would be in a Town Hall format in which members of the audience would be allowed to ask questions. "And in the last debate, the President answered the questions that were asked of him. We still continue to believe that Mitt Romney's experience and time at Bain, the deals he was or wasn't involved in depending on how long he was there, his investments, the short span of which we know about, are important because it offers a prism for the American people into what he's all about and what kind of a President he will be. We'll continue to make that case. We'll see what comes up in the next couple of debates," she said if Obama would be raising the issue of Bain Capital during his next encounter with Romney. Source: Indian Express

Apple CEO sorry for maps shortcomings

NEW YORK —Apple apologized Friday for its glitch-ridden maps application in the new operating system used by the iPhone 5 and urged customers to use rival programs while improvements are made. “At Apple, we strive to make world-class products that deliver the best experience possible to our customers. With the launch of our new Maps last week, we fell short on this commitment,” chief executive Tim Cook said in an open letter. “We are extremely sorry for the frustration this has caused our customers and we are doing everything we can to make Maps better.” Apple developed its own mapping program included in its new mobile iOS 6 operating system, and in doing so booted off Google Maps, which had been the default program for Apple devices. But the new Apple program immediately drew scorn for omitting key landmarks and cities, failing to identify correct locations and distorting views from its images. Cook encouraged customers to use alternatives, including Google, as Apple works out its bugs. “The more our customers use our Maps, the better it will get, and we greatly appreciate all of the feedback we have received from you,” he said. “While we’re improving Maps, you can try alternatives by downloading map apps from the App Store like Bing, MapQuest and Waze, or use Google or Nokia maps by going to their websites and creating an icon on your home screen to their Web app.” Although the maps application does not generate revenues directly, it often links to searches, and keeps users in the company’s “ecosystem,” which can be important over the long term. The apology came as Apple was launching its new iPhone in 22 additional countries, a week after a rollout in nine. The device, which sold more than five million in its launch weekend, is set to be available in 100 countries by year’s end. The new iOS 6 operating system according to Apple, has been downloaded for more than 100 million devices, including previous versions of the iPhone and the iPad tablet, But the maps glitches have tarnished the reputation of the iconic US firm, and some analysts have suggested the problems could drive customers away from the iPhone. Google has been silent so far on whether it will produce a new maps app for iOS 6, but the Google Maps program can be accessed through Web browsers on Apple devices. Forrester Research analyst Kerry Bodine said the foul-up suggests Apple is steering away from the tradition imposed by the late co-founder Steve Jobs of ensuring quality even when it hurts the bottom line. “Jobs always put the customer experience first,” she said. “If he were alive today, I’m positive he would have made the tough decision to prioritize the user experience over the urgency to include Apple Maps in iOS 6. “The decision to move forward with a not-ready-for-primetime mapping app has the potential to erode the trust that Jobs built, and the Apple brand right along with it.” Roger Kay, analyst with Endpoint Technologies Associates, offered a similar view. “Apple’s own maps app, clearly inferior now, will likely improve over time, reducing the current irritant,” Kay said. “But this is the first time that I can recall when Apple made a decision to sacrifice user experience for competitive positioning.” Many of the map miscues were highlighted on social media sites, including a Tumblr page titled “Those Amazing iOS 6 Maps.” One user posted an image from the maps program, saying, “The Helsinki Central Railway Station has magically turned into a park.” Another posting said, “Apparently Belgrade, Serbia has no rivers.”Source: SAM Daily Times

Suu Kyi meets Obama, receives medal from Congress

Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi met President Barack Obama at the White House and received the highest congressional award on Wednesday. Suu Kyi, making a coast-to-coast US tour, held private talks with Obama in the Oval Office after being feted by lawmakers in the ornate US Capitol, where she was presented with the Congressional Gold Medal for her long fight for democracy in a country ruled by army generals since 1962. "This is one of the most moving days of my life, to be here in a house undivided, a house joined together to welcome a stranger from a distant land," she said. "Among all these faces are some I saw while I was under house arrest, and some I saw after I was released from house arrest," said Suu Kyi, acknowledging strong support from US lawmakers during her 17 years of house arrest. The Oval Office setting for the first meeting between the two Nobel Peace laureates afforded Suu Kyi's visit some of the trappings normally reserved for visiting foreign presidents and prime ministers. But the White House, apparently treading carefully lest they allow the Suu Kyi events upstage Myanmar's government, kept the meeting low-key. News photographers were allowed in briefly but not television cameras or print reporters. Obama and Suu Kyi met for about half an hour. Obama, seeking re-election in November, seized the chance to meet Suu Kyi on the second day of her US tour. The encounter could help him highlight what many see as a foreign policy accomplishment of his administration in helping to push Myanmar's generals onto the path of democratic change. Myanmar president acknowledged: At her congressional medal ceremony, both Suu Kyi and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton acknowledged the presence in the audience of a minister representing Myanmar President Thein Sein and the country's new ambassador in Washington. "This task has been made possible by the reform measures instituted by President Thein Sein," said Suu Kyi in her acceptance speech. Earlier on Wednesday, the United States removed sanctions that blocked any US assets of Thein Sein and the speaker of Myanmar's lower house of parliament and that generally barred American companies from dealing with them. Thein Sein and lower house speaker Shwe Mann, once members of the former military junta who have won international praise for driving reforms in the 18 months since the military ceded power to a quasi-civilian government, were both removed from the U.S. Treasury's list of "specially designated nationals." Thein Sein will visit New York for the annual U.N. General Assembly next week, when he is expected to meet senior US officials. US lawmakers and officials who turned out to honor Suu Kyi expressed amazement - some tearing up - that she had made the journey from house arrest to Washington. "I might have hoped, but I'm not sure I expected, that one day I would have the honor of welcoming my personal hero, Aung San Suu Kyi, to the Congress of the United States," said Republican Senator John McCain. West wing lessons: Clinton said she expected change to come in the country also known as Burma, but did not know how long it would take. "It's almost too delicious to believe, my friend, that you are here in the rotunda of our great capitol, the centre piece of our democracy as an elected member of your parliament," she said. The solemn ceremony was sprinkled with lighter moments, as Clinton related a trip to Myanmar last year, where she quoted the speaker of the lower house of parliament as saying, "Help us learn how to be a democratic congress, a parliament." "He went on to tell me that they were trying to teach themselves by watching old segments of The West Wing," Clinton said, referring to the fictional U.S. television series about presidential politics. "I said, 'I think we can do better than that, Mr. Speaker.'" Suu Kyi won the 1991 Nobel Peace Prize for championing democracy in opposition to the military junta that held her under house arrest for years. Her last stay in the United States was in the 1970s as a United Nations employee. Suu Kyi's election to parliament in April helped to transform the pariah image of Myanmar and persuade the West to begin rolling back sanctions after a year of dramatic reforms, including the release of about 700 political prisoners in amnesties between May 2011 and July. Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2009, early in his term with no concrete foreign policy successes on his record, leading critics to say he was rewarded mostly for eloquent speech-making. Source: Deccan Chronicle

NASA shells out award for 'ninja star' supersonic plane design

NASA has awarded a $100,000 grant for the development of a ‘ninja star-shaped’ plane capable of supersonic travel. The groundbreaking aircraft is capable of turning at 90 degree-angles mid-flight, transforming it into a supersonic jet. The creators of the new plane have designed it to fly like a normal aircraft, but upon reaching supersonic atmosphere levels the craft rotates, and then flies at twice the speed of sound. "We are inventing the ways in which next-generation aircraft and spacecraft will change the world and inspiring Americans to take bold steps," Michael Gazarik, director of NASA's Space Technology Program told the Huffington Post. The plane’s rotation is designed to reduce air resistance during faster-than-sound flight. In order to take off, the craft uses its two longer wings to achieve subsonic speeds. The larger wingspan would cause unwanted drag in supersonic flight, so the plane spins 90 degrees in order to give itself a more aerodynamic profile. The revolutionary dual-design means that the plane poduces "virtually zero sonic boom" when it breaks the sound barrier, its creator claims. Gecheng Zha of the University of Miami, the plane’s designer, said that the mid-flight rotation would not be uncomfortable for passengers, and would reduce G-force pull on takeoff. “Imagine a flight from New York to Los Angeles that only takes two hours instead of six, and from New York to Tokyo in just five instead of fifteen,” Professor Zha said. The planned plane design is still a work in progress, and is not expected to see a working model for at least a few decades.Source: Sam Daily Times

Americans mark more low-key 9/11 anniversary

Americans mark the 11th anniversary of the September 11 attacks on Tuesday with relatively low-key ceremonies that reflect a gradual dampening of passions around the fateful day. The main event will be the ritual reading at New York's Ground Zero of the names of the 2,983 people killed both on 9/11 and in the precursor to those attacks, the 1993 car bombing of the World Trade Center. Relatives of the dead will take turns to read the names against a backdrop of mournful music. They will pause for moments of silence marking the time when each of the four planes hijacked by al-Qaeda turned into fireballs - two smashing into the Twin Towers, one into the Pentagon and one into a Pennsylvania field. Another two moments of silence will be observed at the times the two towers collapsed, accounting for the vast majority of 9/11's victims. However, this year New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and other politicians will not take the podium at Ground Zero, in contrast with last year's 10th anniversary, when President Barack Obama led a long list of VIP guests. Obama and his wife Michelle will observe the anniversary with a moment of silence outside the White House, then visit the Pentagon memorial. Vice President Joe Biden, meanwhile, will travel to Shanksville, Pennsylvania, where United flight 93 crashed after passengers attacked the hijackers and thwarted a worse disaster. The White House said Obama had been briefed by "key national security principals on... preparedness and security posture" for the anniversary. But in keeping with the lower key atmosphere this year, there will apparently be no official suspension of the bitter presidential campaign. Former president Bill Clinton will be campaigning for Obama and speaking out against Republican Mitt Romney at an event in Miami. The passage of time appears to have cooled public attention to September 11, particularly after the huge media coverage of the 10th anniversary, which many saw as a suitable moment for allowing commemorations to peak. A skyscraper at One World Trade Center is near completion and is again the tallest building in New York, as were the Twin Towers before they came down. The killing by American troops of al-Qaeda founder Osama bin Laden in May 2011 has helped draw a line under 9/11, as has the opening of the Ground Zero memorial, where last year's ceremonies were held. Bin Laden's successor Ayman al-Zawahiri released a video on the eve of this year's anniversary in which he confirmed that his deputy, Abu Yayha al-Libi, had been killed in a drone strike in Pakistan in June. Libi was considered Al-Qaeda's global propaganda mastermind and his death dealt the biggest blow to the group since the killing of bin Laden. This year sees the publishing on Tuesday of a book by a former US Navy SEAL who was among the troops who shot dead bin Laden in his Pakistan hideout. The book describes in gory detail how the special forces killed the fugitive, then radioed back the news, saying it was ‘for God and country.’ The Pentagon has threatened legal action against the author, who uses the penname Mark Owen but has been outed by the US media as Matt Bissonnette. Last week, Obama said in a radio address that the United States is "stronger, safer and more respected in the world" since 9/11. But his Republican opponent has accused Obama of weak leadership during the Arab Spring turmoil and of failing to be tough enough on Iran's government. In Afghanistan, which once hosted bin Laden, US troops continue to battle the Taliban, Islamist fighters who were driven from power during the invasion a decade ago but have since regrouped. Most foreign troops are scheduled to withdraw by the end of 2014, handing over responsibility for combat to Western-backed Afghan government forces. Source: The Asian Age
